Overview

This document is a user manual for the Electrolux FCW 200 and FCW 300 Vaccine/Icepack Chest Freezers. It provides detailed information on the product's description, installation, usage, maintenance, troubleshooting, and storage guidelines.

Function Description:

The Electrolux FCW 200 and FCW 300 are vaccine and icepack chest freezers specifically designed for the storage and freezing of vaccines and icepacks for medical use, particularly in high ambient temperatures. These appliances operate on a compressor-based refrigeration system, using 230V/50Hz electrical power and R134a refrigerant. They are insulated with polyurethane foam containing cyclopentane. The freezer features two compartments: a main compartment for vaccine storage and a smaller "fast freeze" compartment dedicated to icepack freezing. The internal temperature is regulated by a thermostat, and a thermometer with a dial on the front panel allows for easy monitoring of the vaccine temperature without opening the lid. For security, the appliance is equipped with a lock operated by a key.

Important Technical Specifications:

    • Maximum Icepack Freezing Capacity: 7.2 kg/24hour (with vaccine) or 22.8 kg/24hour (without vaccine).
  • Dimensions (approximate):
    • Width (FCW 200): 1050 mm.
    • Width (FCW 300): 1600 mm.
    • Depth: 665 mm.
    • Height: 850 mm.
  • Power Supply Connection: Recommended 15 Amps power plug socket outlet with PVC insulated cables of minimum 2.5 mm² section of Aluminium, properly earthed (green/yellow wire).
  • Operating Temperature Range: Inner temperature must not be lower than -15 °C.

Usage Features:

  • Temperature Control: A thermostat with a numbered dial (1 to 7) allows users to adjust the internal temperature. Turning the knob towards "7" makes the freezer colder, while turning it towards "1" makes it warmer. A coin can be used to turn the knob.
  • Control Panel: Features a green light (indicating power connection), a yellow light (illuminated when "Super" button is depressed for fast freezing), and a red alarm light (indicating high internal temperature). The red alarm light can be triggered by inserting a large amount of vaccine/icepack or by opening the lid for too long.
  • Lid and Sealing: The lid is fitted with a tightly closing sealing strip to prevent moisture ingress and frost formation. A vacuum may form after closing the lid, making it temporarily difficult to open; users are advised to wait a few minutes before gently pulling the handle.
  • Thermometer: A front-mounted dial thermometer provides continuous temperature monitoring without needing to open the lid.
  • Locking System: A key-operated lock secures the contents of the freezer.
  • Storage Organization: Vaccines should be kept in neat rows, with different vaccines separated for easy identification. A 2 cm space between rows is recommended for air circulation. A separate thermometer should be placed among the vaccines to verify their actual temperature.

Maintenance Features:

  • Defrosting: Required when the frost layer on the walls reaches 1/4" to 1/2" (6-12 mm) thickness.
    1. Switch off power and unplug the appliance.
    2. Transfer vaccines to a temporary storage (another freezer, cold-box, or vaccine carrier with frozen ice packs) to maintain their recommended temperature.
    3. Open the drainage plug inside the cabinet and place a container under the drain hose to collect defrost water.
    4. Keep the lid open to allow frost to melt completely. Do not use heat sources other than hot water or sharp instruments for defrosting.
    5. Clean all internal parts with warm water and mild detergent.
    6. Clean the lid and rubber seal (gasket). After drying, rub the gasket with unscented talcum powder (or French chalk), especially on the hinge side.
    7. Clean the exterior with warm water and mild detergent.
    8. Allow cleaned parts to dry completely.
    9. Reset the drain plug.
    10. Close the lid and reconnect power.
    11. Allow the appliance to run and reach the safe temperature range before returning vaccines.
  • Daily Observations/Checks:
    • Take temperature readings from the thermometer at least twice daily (morning and afternoon) and record them systematically.
    • Adjust the thermostat if the temperature is outside the required range.
    • Clean the exterior with a clean dry cloth.
  • Weekly Observations/Checks:
    • Examine the inner compartment for frost formation. If frost exceeds 1/4" (6 mm), defrost the appliance.
    • If weekly defrosting is needed, check the rubber seal on the lid for proper fit and gaps. Adjust the lid or change the seal if necessary.
    • Restrict and reduce the frequency of opening the appliance.
  • Monthly Observations/Checks:
    • Clean the compressor compartment:
      • Switch off power and unplug.
      • Remove the plastic grid of the compressor compartment (right-hand side).
      • Clean the interior with a soft brush.
      • Check and tighten compressor mounting brackets.
      • Refit the plastic grid.
    • Clean the lid seal.
    • Compare readings of the dial thermometer with a standard mercury thermometer to ensure accuracy. Re-adjust or replace dial thermometers if incorrect to prevent vaccine potency loss.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides guidance for common issues such as the appliance not working (checking power supply, plug connections, terminal strip) and the compressor working but the cabinet temperature being too high (checking air circulation, frost formation, thermostat setting, refrigerant leakage). It also addresses abnormal noise (checking mounting brackets, pipes, and appliance level).
  • Shutting Down for Transportation: Disconnect power, defrost and clean the interior, leave the lid open until dry, and coil/bind the power supply cord.
