EPW50-48A-E power module (module for short) uses soft-switching
and input / output soft start-up technology. Its output can be
regulated through monitoring. Multiple modules can be paralleled to
share the load.

The module will send alarm through alarm indicators upon input
over- and under- voltage, output over-voltage, and module fault.
5 Input And Output Connectors
EPW50-27A-E power module connects to user system through its
interfaces: AC input socket (FCI, 51939-021); DC output socket (FCI,
51939-022), which also serves as the signal interface. Their pin
locations are shown in Figure 1 and pin definitions are listed in
Table 2.

Protection Features:

The module incorporates comprehensive protection mechanisms to ensure safe and reliable operation:

  • Input Overvoltage Protection: The module will alarm and shut down if the input voltage exceeds 305Vac, recovering when it drops below 300Vac.
  • Input Undervoltage Protection: The module will alarm and shut down if the input voltage falls below 85Vac, recovering when it increases above 90Vac.
  • Output Overvoltage Protection: Protection activates between 58.5Vdc and 60.5Vdc. The module will shut down and lock upon overvoltage, requiring manual reset after the condition is cleared.
  • Current Limit Protection: Limits output power to 2900W (176-220Vac input) and 1200W (90-175Vac input).
  • Short Circuit Protection: The module protects against short circuits, limiting output to 61A. It recovers automatically once the fault is removed.
  • Overtemperature Protection: The module will alarm and shut down if the internal temperature exceeds 116°C, recovering when it drops below 110°C.
  • Alarm Indicators: The module provides visual alarms (Green, Red, Yellow LEDs) for input over/under-voltage, output over-voltage, and module faults.

Usage Features

Connectivity:

The EPW50-27A-E power module connects to the user system via:

  • AC Input Socket: FCI, 51939-021 (L, GND, N pins)
  • DC Output Socket: FCI, 51939-022 (DC+, DC-, Pre-charge, Load share+, Load share-, Address bits 0-4, Address GND, Current limit, +5V, +5VGND, RS485+, RS485- pins)

Parallel Operation:

Multiple modules can be connected in parallel to share the load. This is achieved by connecting the output connectors and load sharing cables of the modules in parallel. The "Load share+" and "Load share-" pins are critical for this function and should be well-grounded and shorter than 0.5m.

Address Configuration:

The module's address (0-31) can be configured using Address bits 0-4. Suspending an address bit represents '0', while shorting it to GND represents '1'.

Current Limit and Module Model Reporting:

Pins 5 and 6 are used to limit the output current and report the module model. Shorting these pins from the backboard on the subrack causes the module to output according to the EPW50-48A characteristic and report "0x02". Otherwise, it outputs according to the EPW30-48A characteristic and reports "0x01".

Installation:

Installation is straightforward:

  1. Ensure the module handle is open.
  2. Insert the module into the designated slot.
  3. Push the module until its interfaces contact the backboard.
  4. Push the handle until the module is fully inserted and locked into the subrack.
  5. Secure the handle with screws.

Maintenance Features

Hot-Swappable Design:

The module is hot-swappable, allowing for replacement of damaged units during system operation without interruption. This minimizes downtime and enhances system availability.

Module Replacement Procedure:

  1. To remove, pull up the handle on the bottom of the module front panel and pull it out.
  2. To install, insert the module smoothly along the slot until the lock structure engages.
  3. The entire unit should be replaced if maintenance is required.

Troubleshooting:

The manual provides a basic troubleshooting guide based on LED indicators:

  • Green LED Off: Indicates no AC input, damaged input fuse, module failure, or active protections. Action: Check loads, input voltage, input fuse, and fan.
  • Red LED On: Indicates module shutdown fault. Action: Remove conditions raising protections.
  • Yellow LED On: Indicates module temperature pre-alarm or monitoring module controlling the module to switch off. Action: Remove conditions raising protections.

For complex issues, users are advised to contact the nearest Emerson local sales office or service center rather than attempting self-repair. Faulty units should be returned to Emerson for repair.

Safety and Warranty:

  • Fuse Replacement: For continued protection against fire risk, replace fuses only with the same type and rating.
  • Fusing: Double pole / neutral fusing.
  • Air Breaker: An air breaker (advisably 220V/32A or higher rating) should be installed upstream of the module.
  • Warranty: 1 year.
