Overview

The Emotiva Ultra Series Subwoofers (Ultra Sub 10/12) are designed to enhance home theater and music listening experiences by providing dynamic, solid bass with accurate and extended frequency response. These subwoofers are built with high-quality components and incorporate advanced technologies to deliver audiophile-level sound. Their compact cabinet size makes them suitable for systems employing multiple subwoofer setups.

Function Description:

The Ultra Subwoofers are active subwoofers, meaning they have a built-in amplifier. They receive low-frequency audio signals from a preamplifier or processor and reproduce them, adding depth and impact to the overall soundstage. The subwoofers feature various controls to integrate seamlessly with existing audio systems, including adjustments for crossover frequency, volume, and phase. They can be used in both stereo and multi-channel audio systems.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Output:
    • USub10: 300 watts
    • USub12: 500 watts
  • Typical In-Room Frequency Response:
    • USub10: 25Hz-200Hz
    • USub12: 22Hz-200Hz
  • Typical In-Room SPL (Sound Pressure Level):
    • USub10: 107-110dB
    • USub12: 109-112dB
  • Input Sensitivity:
    • Balanced Input: 3V
    • Unbalanced Input: 1.25V
  • Phase Adjustment: 0-180 degrees
  • Crossover Frequency (Low Pass Filter): 50-150Hz (24dB per octave)
  • Dimensions:
    • USub10: 12.5" wide x 12.5" high x 13.5" deep
    • USub12: 14.5" wide x 14.5" high x 15.25" deep
  • Weight:
    • USub10: 30.5 lbs.
    • USub12: 38 lbs.
  • Cabinet: MDF laminated, critically braced for durability and damped to reduce resonance, featuring a full one-inch thick baffle.
  • Woofer: Proprietary para-aramid blend reinforced paper cone and dust cap for accurate low-frequency response, reinforced with triple-woven synthetic polyamides for strength and flexibility.
  • Surround: Heavy-duty butyl rubber surround for precise cone assembly positioning and decreased distortion at high excursions, allowing greater X-max.
  • Amplifier: High efficiency Class D power amplifiers with exceptional dynamic headroom.
  • Feet: Threaded, interchangeable feet and spikes (conical, brushed aluminum for carpeted floors; high-density rubber for hardwood/tile floors).

Usage Features:

  • Connectivity:
    • XLR/Balanced Input: For connecting to preamplifiers or processors with balanced subwoofer outputs, offering high noise immunity.
    • RCA/Unbalanced Inputs: For connecting to preamplifiers or processors with unbalanced subwoofer outputs. Both RCA inputs are summed, allowing for single or dual (Left/Right) subwoofer output connections from a multi-channel processor.
  • Low Pass Filter: Directs frequencies passed through the subwoofer. Can be set to 'ON' with adjustable crossover frequency (50Hz-150Hz) or 'BYPASS' if the preamplifier/processor handles low pass filtering.
  • Crossover Frequency Selector: Rotary control to set the low pass filter frequency from 50Hz to 150Hz. A logarithmic control, meaning frequency changes by ratio, not fixed measurements.
  • Volume Control: Adjusts the subwoofer's main output level. Recommended to start at a halfway position if the preamplifier/processor also controls subwoofer volume.
  • Phase Adjustment Control: Adjusts the subwoofer's phase from 0 to 180 degrees relative to the main speakers, crucial for seamless integration and proper soundstage imaging.
  • Standby Power Switch:
    • 'ON' mode: Brings the subwoofer to full power.
    • 'OFF' mode: Returns the subwoofer to standby mode.
    • 'AUTO' mode: Automatically powers on when an audio signal is detected and returns to standby after ten minutes of no audio signal.
  • Main Power Switch: Located on the rear panel, '1' (On) puts the subwoofer in standby mode, while '0' (Off) completely powers down the unit.
  • Placement Tips: Emphasizes experimentation with subwoofer placement to optimize sound propagation within the listening room, considering how walls, cabinets, and furniture can affect bass frequencies. Recommended starting locations are provided (A, B, C, D in a diagram).
  • Multi-Subwoofer Systems: The compact size makes them ideal for multiple subwoofer setups, which can provide a more cohesive, powerful, smooth, and balanced soundstage. Instructions are provided for setting up two subwoofers (e.g., left/right placement) and adjusting controls for optimal integration.

Maintenance Features:

  • Safety Precautions: Detailed instructions on safe installation and operation, including avoiding water, ensuring adequate ventilation, proper power cord routing, and unplugging when unused for extended periods. Warnings against electric shock and the importance of professional servicing for specific issues (e.g., damaged cord, liquid spills, exposure to rain, abnormal operation, physical damage).
  • Troubleshooting Guide: Provides solutions for common issues such as "No Sound" (checking connections, cables, mute switches, power switch, internal fuse), "Turn-on and Turn-off Thumps" (using different AC outlets, line conditioning), and "'Hum' Noises" (identifying ground loops, checking external connections, power cords, and component placement).
  • Packing Materials: Users are advised to save all original packing materials and boxes for potential future relocation or servicing.
  • Warranty: A five-year limited warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship, with exclusions for damage caused during shipment, misuse, unauthorized modifications, defaced serial numbers, or purchases from non-authorized dealers.
  • Service Assistance: Instructions for obtaining a Return Authorization (RMA) number before sending the subwoofer for repair, including contact information for Emotiva Technical Support.
