Overview

This document is the Homeowner's Manual for Empire Comfort Systems Direct Vent Zero Clearance Gas Fireplace Heater Series, including both Millivolt (MV) and Intermittent Pilot (IP) models. It provides comprehensive information for safe installation, operation, and maintenance of the appliance.

Function Description

The Empire Direct Vent Zero Clearance Gas Fireplace Heater is a heating appliance designed for installation into a listed wood-burning fireplace, a permanently located manufactured home (USA only), or a mobile home, where not prohibited by state or local codes. It operates on either natural gas or propane, as indicated on the rating plate, and is not convertible to other gas types without a certified kit. The fireplace provides radiant and convective heat to the living space.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Models Covered:
    • Millivolt (MV): DVCD(32,36,42)FP3(0,1)(N,P)-4
    • Intermittent Pilot (IP): DVCD(32,36,42)FP7(0,1)(N,P)-4
  • Certification: Design certified in accordance with American National Standard/CSA Standard ANSI Z21.88/CSA 2.33 and by Underwriters Laboratories as a Direct Vent Gas Fireplace Heater. UL File No. MH30033.
  • Gas Type: Specific to the rating plate (Natural Gas or Propane).
  • Electrical Power: Required for IPI electronic systems and optional fan kits. Millivolt systems do not require external electricity for pilot or burner operation.
  • Ventilation: Direct vent system, requiring proper installation and inspection of the vent system and termination cap.
  • Safety Features:
    • Barrier screen to reduce the risk of burns from hot viewing glass.
    • Automatic shutdown if pilot fails (IPI models).
    • Gas control knob with push-in safety feature to prevent accidental turning.
    • Designed for zero clearance installation.

Usage Features

  • Lighting Instructions: Detailed procedures are provided for both Millivolt (30 Series) and Intermittent Pilot (FP7 Series) systems.
    • Millivolt (MV) System: Features a standing pilot that must be lit by hand. The gas control knob has "OFF," "PILOT," and "ON" positions. A piezo ignitor button is used to light the pilot. Once the pilot is lit, the main burner can be turned on. A HI/LO flame adjustment knob (regulator) allows for manual control of flame height. A REMOTE/OFF/ON switch controls the main burner.
    • Intermittent Pilot (IP) Electronic System (70 Series): Offers two modes:
      • IPI Mode (Intermittent Pilot): Pilot lights only when the fireplace is turned ON, then the burner lights. Both pilot and burner turn OFF when the fireplace is turned OFF.
      • CPI Mode (Continuous Pilot): Pilot remains ON continuously, even when the burner is OFF. Recommended for reducing cold start issues and conserving battery backup power.
      • A small toggle switch on the module tray selects between IPI (left) and CPI (right).
      • The system uses an electrical spark to ignite the pilot. Once the pilot sensor heats up, the valve energizes, allowing gas flow to the burner.
      • A manual HI/LO flame adjustment knob (regulator) controls burner flame height.
      • Operation is controlled by a manual ON/OFF switch or an optional remote control.
  • Remote Control (Optional): Available for IPI models, allowing for convenient operation. The remote receiver can be placed in a wall outlet box, on the hearth, behind the surround panel, or in the control compartment. Battery life is extended in cooler areas.
  • Seasonal Shutdown: Instructions are provided to turn off the fireplace, remove the barrier screen, access the gas control valve, and turn off the gas supply. For remote control models, batteries should be removed from the transmitter and battery backup.
  • Hot Glass Warning: Emphasizes that the glass gets hot and can cause burns. Users are warned not to touch the glass until cooled and to never allow children to touch it. A barrier is provided to reduce burn risk.
  • Television Considerations: Warns against installing televisions above fireplaces due to heat, and states that Empire Comfort Systems accepts no responsibility for damage or injuries from such installations. Users are advised to turn off the fireplace and allow it to cool before servicing or touching TV buttons.

Maintenance Features

  • Annual Inspection: Recommended at the beginning of each heating season by a qualified service person. More frequent inspections may be needed in areas with pet hair, dust, or lint. The inspection checklist includes:
    • Pilot and burner system operation and replacement of damaged parts.
    • Glass gasket and door seal.
    • Barrier screen fit and structural integrity.
    • Latches for proper operation and tension.
    • Log set/decorative media for debris and damage.
    • Dust and debris removal from fireplace, valves, and control.
    • Glass cleaning.
    • Glowing embers freshening.
    • Battery replacement (battery pack, transmitter, and receiver).
    • Venting and vent termination cap for damage, corrosion, sooting, or obstruction.
  • Cleaning Procedures:
    • General: Turn off pilot flame, allow fireplace to cool, remove barrier screen and glass door, remove logs and coals, vacuum burner compartment, replace components, ignite pilot, and operate pilot burner.
    • Glass: Clean periodically with gas fireplace glass cleaner or non-abrasive household cleaner and warm water. Avoid ammonia-based or abrasive cleaners, and do not clean hot glass. Initial paint curing may cause a film on the glass, requiring multiple cleanings.
    • Burner and Control Compartment: Keep clean by vacuuming or brushing at least twice a year.
    • Logs: Handle with gloves to prevent skin irritation from ceramic fibers. Clean with a soft brush or canned air. Eye and respiratory protection, along with safety gloves, are recommended.
    • Pilot: Clean with compressed air.
    • Flame Sensor: Wipe with a damp paper towel.
  • Glass Door Removal/Installation: Detailed steps are provided for removing and installing the barrier screen and glass door for cleaning and maintenance.
  • Log Installation: Emphasizes the critical importance of proper log positioning for safe and clean operation, referring to the installer manual for details.
  • Wiring: Any replacement wiring must be ordered from an Empire dealer.
  • Odor and Noise: Notes that expansion/contraction noises and initial odors from paint curing are normal during the first few uses.
  • Underwater Damage: If any part of the appliance has been underwater, it must not be used. A qualified service technician must inspect and replace any affected parts.
  • Natural Disaster Damage: Following a natural disaster, a qualified technician must inspect for damage or gas leaks before operation.
  • Solid Fuels: Never burn solid fuels (wood, coal, paper, cardboard) in this fireplace.

Safety Information for Users of Propane Gas

  • Odor Recognition: Propane is odorless but has an odorant added. Users are advised to learn to recognize this smell (e.g., using a "Scratch and Sniff" pamphlet from their dealer).
  • Odor Fade: Explains that the odorant can fade due to various factors (e.g., smoking, other odors, underground leaks, oxidation by rust in tanks/pipes, adsorption onto walls).
  • Action for Gas Leak: If gas is smelled:
    • Do not operate electrical switches, light matches, or use the phone.
    • Evacuate the building immediately.
    • Close all gas tank/cylinder supply valves.
    • Stay out of low areas (basements) as propane is heavier than air.
    • Call the gas supplier and fire department from a neighbor's phone.
    • Do not re-enter until declared safe by firefighters and service personnel.
  • "Gas Out" Procedure: If the container runs completely empty, turn off the tank valve immediately to prevent air from entering the system and potential internal rusting.

Requirements for Massachusetts

Specific regulations for horizontally vented gas-fueled equipment installed in Massachusetts dwellings, including:

  • Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Hard-wired detectors with alarm and battery backup required on the floor level of installation and each additional level. Provisions for crawl spaces/attics and a 30-day compliance period are outlined. Detectors must comply with NFPA 720 and be ANSI/UL 2034 listed and IAS certified.
  • Signage: A metal or plastic identification plate must be permanently mounted on the building exterior (minimum 8 feet above grade, in line with the vent terminal) stating "GAS VENT DIRECTLY BELOW. KEEP CLEAR OF ALL OBSTRUCTIONS" in at least 1/2 inch print.
  • Inspection: State or local gas inspectors must verify compliance with CO detector and signage requirements before approving installation.
  • Exemptions: Certain equipment is exempt from these requirements.
  • Manufacturer Requirements: If the manufacturer does not provide venting parts but identifies "special venting systems," instructions for these systems must be included and be Product Approved by the Board.
  • Documentation: All installation instructions, venting instructions, parts lists, and design instructions must remain with the fireplace at the completion of installation.
