The VMD202 vehicle motion detector senses moving
ferrous metal within its magnetic field. It has a
detection range up to 3.5 m at a minimum speed of
8 km/hr. An optional sensitivity remote finely tunes
the VMD202 to fit any installation requirement and
then easily detaches to prevent unwanted changes
or tampering. The settings are stored in a non-
volatile memory, saving them in case of power
failure. The VMD202 accepts a wide range of power
inputs from 12-39 VDC or 12-27 VAC and features a
low current consumption (70 uA standby / 25 mA
activated) making it ideal for solar applications.

Do you have a question about the EMX Industries VMD202 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The EMX VMD202 is a single-piece vehicle motion detector designed to sense moving ferrous metal within its magnetic field. It operates by detecting changes in the earth's magnetic field caused by moving vehicles. The device is suitable for gate automation, allowing gates to open for exiting vehicles without the need for key fobs or passcodes, and can also be integrated into home automation or security systems to notify of vehicle movement on a driveway.

Function Description:

The VMD202 detects moving ferrous metal objects, such as cars, trucks, and trains. It is specifically designed to detect moving vehicles and will not trigger for stationary vehicles, making it unsuitable as a vehicle presence detector (e.g., for reversing loops). The detector has a range of up to 3.5 meters (12 feet) at a minimum speed of 8 km/hr (5 mph). An optional sensitivity remote (VMD202-R) allows for fine-tuning of the detection sensitivity across 10 settings. These settings are stored in non-volatile memory, preserving them even in the event of a power failure. The remote can be detached after configuration to prevent tampering. The probe assembly and cable are water-tight and suitable for direct burial.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Input: 12-39 VDC or 12-27 VAC
  • Current Consumption:
    • Standby: 70 uA
    • Activated: 25 mA
    • This low current consumption makes it ideal for solar applications.
  • Power Indicator: Green LED (on Sensitivity Remote Only) flashes when power is applied.
  • Detection Range: Up to 3.5 m (12 ft) at a minimum speed of 8 km/hr (5 mph).
    • Average size car or truck (8 km/hr min.): Up to 30 cm
    • Average size car or truck (16-80 km/hr): Greater than 30 cm
    • Large truck or semi-truck (Over 80 km/hr): Greater than 1 m
    • Train (Any speed): 2.5 m
  • Sensitivity Adjustment: 10 settings (0=Low to 9=High)
  • Output Time: 5 seconds
  • Relay Output Configuration: Form C (SPDT - Single Pole Double Throw)
  • Relay Contact Rating: 1A @ 24 VDC / 1A @ 120 VAC
  • Operating Temperature: -30°C to 70°C (-22°F to 158°F)
  • Relative Humidity: 0 to 95%
  • Surge Protection: Probe input circuitry protected by surge suppressors.
  • Housing Material:
    • Remote: ABS plastic
    • Probe: PVC (watertight)
  • Dimensions:
    • Remote (L x W x H): 74 mm (2.9") x 35 mm (1.7") x 15 mm (0.6")
    • Probe (L x Dia.): 610 mm (24") x 25 mm (1")
  • Remote Weight: 23 g (0.05 lbs)
  • Probe Cable: 5-wire, direct burial PVC. Available in various lengths, including a 15m option (VMD202-15).

Usage Features:

  • Ease of Installation: The VMD202 is a compact, single-piece unit. The probe can be installed adjacent to a roadway or directly in the roadway (concrete or asphalt).
  • Adjustable Sensitivity: The optional VMD202-R remote allows users to precisely tune the detection sensitivity to fit specific installation requirements, preventing false triggers from unintended sources like bicycles, small vehicles, or electrical disturbances. The sensitivity is a function of vehicle speed and mass; smaller, slower vehicles require the probe to be closer for detection.
  • Non-Volatile Memory: Settings are saved even if power is lost, eliminating the need for re-configuration after power interruptions.
  • Detachable Remote: The sensitivity remote can be easily detached after initial setup to prevent unwanted changes or tampering.
  • Solar Power Compatibility: The low current consumption (70 uA standby) makes the VMD202 suitable for solar-powered applications. For solar setups, it is recommended to remove the remote after sensitivity adjustment and power the probe directly from the operator to minimize current draw. A 12 VDC battery is recommended for solar applications.
  • Direct Burial: The probe assembly and cable are designed for direct burial, offering durability and protection against environmental factors.
  • Earth Ground Connection: Proper earth grounding is crucial for protection against electrical transients (lightning, etc.) and false triggering. A 20cm copper rod or metal cold-water pipe can provide a sufficient earth-ground connection.

Maintenance Features:

  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting section to address common issues such as false triggering, no output, or no detection. This includes steps to verify wiring, power supply, relay functionality, and environmental factors.
  • Durable Construction: The probe's PVC watertight housing and direct burial cable contribute to its longevity and reduced maintenance needs in various environmental conditions.
  • Surge Protection: Built-in surge suppressors protect the probe input circuitry from electrical transients, enhancing reliability and reducing the risk of damage.

Important Considerations:

  • The VMD202 detects ferrous metals; it will not detect aluminum.
  • The probe must remain stationary to function properly. Avoid mounting it on surfaces that may vibrate.
  • Avoid installing the probe near power lines, transformers, electric motors, cell phone towers, or other electrical devices that can produce magnetic field disturbances.
  • For installations where cable damage from burrowing animals is a concern, placing the cable in plastic conduit (3.8 cm internal diameter) is recommended. Ensure the conduit is sealed to prevent water collection and the probe is secured with foam or tape to prevent movement.
  • When extending the cable length (maximum 15m), use a high-quality lead-in cable suitable for direct burial and a watertight splice to prevent moisture ingress.
  • For high pedestrian traffic, heavy animals, or heavy vehicles, burying the probe 60 cm deep can help prevent false triggering.

Ordering Information:

  • VMD202-15: Probe with 15m of cable.
  • VMD202-R: Remote for tuning and adjustment control.

Warranty:

EMX Industries, Inc. provides a 2-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and service from the date of sale. The warranty does not cover ordinary wear and tear, abuse, misuse, overloading, altered products, or damage from incorrect connections or lightning.
