Overview

The Fairway A210 Aluminum Railing is a robust and aesthetically pleasing railing system designed for both level and stair installations, offering a durable and low-maintenance solution for outdoor living spaces. Manufactured by Envision Outdoor Living Products, this railing system is part of their Fairway Architectural Railing Solutions line, known for its quality and ease of installation.

Function Description:

The Fairway A210 Aluminum Railing serves as a safety barrier and an architectural accent for decks, patios, and other elevated outdoor areas. It is designed to provide security and compliance with local building codes, while also enhancing the visual appeal of a property. The system is available in both level and stair configurations, making it versatile for various applications. Its primary function is to prevent falls from elevated surfaces and to define the boundaries of an outdoor space. The use of aluminum ensures a lightweight yet strong structure that resists corrosion and requires minimal upkeep.

Important Technical Specifications:

The railing system utilizes square aluminum balusters, which are a key component of its design and structural integrity. The kits include all necessary rail components: a top rail, a sub-rail with a rail insert, and a bottom rail with a rail insert. For secure attachment, top and bottom rail connector brackets are provided, along with the required screws. Rail support(s) are also included to ensure stability and compliance with load-bearing requirements. An installation template is part of the level kit, aiding in precise bracket placement, though it is not included in the stair kit due to the varying angles involved.

Tools Needed for Installation:

A drill with a #2 square drive bit is essential for fastening screws. A circular saw is required for cutting rails to the correct length and angle. A speed square assists in making accurate 90° cuts and marking angles for stair installations. A tape measure is crucial for precise measurements of rail lengths and baluster spacing. A drill extension can be helpful for reaching tight spaces or for specific screw placements.

Usage Features:

Level Installation:

  1. Getting Started: Before installation, it's crucial to review all local building codes and wear appropriate safety equipment. Posts or mounting surfaces must be plumb. Post trim should be installed after the railing. The required bottom rail height from the deck surface must be determined based on local building codes.
  2. Install Mounting Brackets: Brackets are inserted into a template according to the desired rail height (middle hole for 36" railing, top hole for 42" railing).
  3. Cut Rails & Install Bottom Rail: Measure the distance between inside mounting brackets. Mark the bottom rail to the correct length, ensuring equal and maximum distance from baluster holes on both ends. Add 3/4" to all bracket marks for both top and bottom rails. Cut the bottom rail, top sub-rail, and top cap rail to the same length, ensuring baluster holes align. Slide bottom bracket covers onto both sides of the rail, set the rail in place, and secure it with two #8 x 3/4" self-drilling screws through the bracket holes. Snap the bracket cover over the bracket.
  4. Insert Balusters: Balusters are inserted into the bottom rail, ensuring they are fully seated. The "P" insert must remain within the bottom rail channel.
  5. Install Top Rail & Panels: Hold the sub-rail at an angle above the balusters, inserting the first baluster and tapping lightly. Insert remaining balusters, ensuring they are fully seated in both bottom and sub-rails. Slide the top bracket cover onto both sides of the top rail. Place the top cap rail over the sub-rail. Secure the rail with two #8 x 3/4" self-drilling screws through the bracket holes. Snap the bracket cover over the bracket.
  6. Finishing Steps: Tap post caps into place. Install two-piece, snap-together trim. Measure to the underside of the bottom rail and cut the rail support to length. Measure to the center of the bottom rail and secure the rail support with a 3/4" stainless steel screw.

Stair Installation:

  1. Getting Started: Similar to level installation, review local building codes, wear safety equipment, ensure plumb posts, and determine bottom rail height.
  2. Mark & Cut Rails: Use blocking to achieve the desired rail sweep height. Lay the bottom rail onto blocking next to the post and clamp it. Balance baluster end spacing for equal distance at the top and bottom of the stairs. Place one baluster in each end hole and place the sub-rail on top. Ensure balusters are parallel to the posts and clamp the sub-rail to each post. Hold brackets on the post next to the rail and mark the rail at all bracket locations. Unclamp the railing section from the post. Add 3/4" to all bracket marks for both top and bottom rails. Transfer the top sub-rail measurement to the top cap rail. Cut all marks at a 90° angle and slide bottom brackets onto the ends of the rail.
  3. Install Brackets & Rail Section: Place the bottom rail onto blocking between posts. Pre-drill bracket holes using a 1/8" drill bit. Secure the rail using the provided 1-1/2" stainless steel screws. Insert balusters into the bottom rail, ensuring they are fully seated. Insert the sub-rail into the top cap rail and slide brackets and tap lightly. Starting at the top of the stairs, insert the first baluster. Insert remaining balusters, ensuring they are fully seated in both the bottom and top rails. Pre-drill bracket holes using a 1/8" bit and secure with 3/4" stainless steel screws.
  4. Finishing Steps: Tap post caps into place. Install two-piece snap-together trim.

Maintenance Features:

The Fairway A210 Aluminum Railing is designed for low maintenance. Aluminum is inherently resistant to rust and corrosion, making it suitable for various outdoor environments. Regular cleaning with mild soap and water is typically sufficient to maintain its appearance. The durable finish of the aluminum components helps to resist fading and chipping, ensuring the railing retains its aesthetic appeal over time without the need for frequent painting or staining. The snap-together trim and post caps contribute to a clean, finished look while also protecting internal components from the elements.
