Overview

The ESi ES3247B is a 3-channel multi-purpose programmer designed to manage central heating and hot water systems in a household. It allows users to set "On" and "Off" time periods for both central heating and domestic hot water, offering flexibility to suit various lifestyles. The programmer can be configured to switch these systems on and off at the same time or independently, depending on the model and selected settings.

Function Description

The ES3247B programmer offers several operational modes and programming options to control heating and hot water. It can automatically switch central heating and hot water ON and OFF either two or three times a day, at user-defined times. The device maintains accurate timekeeping even during power interruptions thanks to a replaceable internal battery (installation by qualified personnel only). The clock is factory pre-set to UK time and date and automatically adjusts for daylight saving changes (forward one hour on the last Sunday of March at 1:00 AM and back one hour on the last Sunday of October at 2:00 AM). While pre-set, the time and date can be manually adjusted if needed.

During installation, the programmer can be configured for 24-hour, 5/2-day, or 7-day programming, and either two or three ON/OFF periods per day, via the technical settings.

  • 24-hour programmer option: Runs the same program every day.
  • 5/2-day programmer option: Allows different ON/OFF times for weekdays (5 days) and weekends (2 days).
  • 7-day programmer option: Allows different ON/OFF times for each day of the week.

The programmer supports two system types:

  • Pumped System (PU): Allows independent control of central heating and hot water.
  • Gravity System (Gr): Does not allow central heating without hot water but can provide hot water without central heating.

It's important to note that when 5/2, 7-day, or 24-hour programming is selected for hot water, the same setting will be applied to heating, and vice versa. The programmer is not suitable for switching devices rated greater than 6 Amp (e.g., immersion timers).

The device features a large, easy-to-read display and is designed to prevent accidental program changes. Buttons that can permanently alter the program are located behind a flip-over fascia, while normally visible buttons only affect the program temporarily.

Usage Features

The ES3247B offers a range of features for daily operation and temporary adjustments:

  • Factory Pre-Set Programme: The programmer comes with a pre-programmed heating profile designed to suit most users. To activate these settings, the slider should be moved to "RUN." If the user modifies the program and wishes to revert to the factory settings, pressing the reset button with a non-metallic pointed tool will restore the default program. Note that after a reset, the time and date must be re-set.

  • Setting the Programmer Option (5/2, 7-day, 24hr):

    1. Move the slider to "HEATING."
    2. Press the "+/-" buttons to cycle between 7-day, 5/2-day, or 24-hour operation.
      • 5/2-day operation is indicated by MO, TU, WE, TH, FR flashing (5 days) and then SA, SU flashing (2 days).
      • 7-day operation shows one day flashing at a time.
      • 24-hour operation shows MO, TU, WE, TH, FR, SA, SU flashing simultaneously.
    3. Wait 15 seconds for automatic confirmation or press the "Home" button. Move the slider to "RUN" to return to Run Mode.
  • Setting the Central Heating Programme:

    1. Move the slider to "HEATING." Select the desired programmer operation (5/2, 7-day, or 24-hour).
    2. Press the "Next" button. Use the "Day" button to select the day or block of days for programming.
    3. The display will show the 1st ON time. Use "+/-" to adjust the time in 10-minute increments, then press "Next."
    4. The display will show the 1st OFF time. Adjust with "+/-" and press "Next."
    5. Repeat steps 3-4 for all remaining ON/OFF periods (up to three per day). For the last OFF period, press "Day" to move to the next day/block. To set Heating Zone 2, repeat steps 2-5.
    6. Repeat steps 3-5 until all days/blocks are programmed. Wait 15 seconds or press "Home" to confirm and return to Run Mode.
    • The "Copy" button can be used in 7-day setting to copy a chosen day's program to the next day.
  • Setting the Hot Water Programme:

    5. Repeat steps 3-4 for all remaining ON/OFF periods. For the last OFF period, press "Day" to move to the next day/block.
    6. Repeat steps 3-5 until all days/blocks are programmed. Wait 15 seconds or press "Home" to confirm and return to Run Mode.
    • The "Copy" button can be used in 7-day setting to copy a chosen day's program to the next day.
  • Setting the Operation Mode (ON/AUTO/ALL DAY/OFF):

    1. Move the slider to "PROG." Press "+/-" to cycle between ON, OFF, AUTO, and ALL DAY modes. Press "Next" to move between the three channels.
      • ON: Central Heating and Hot Water are continuously ON.
      • AUTO: Central Heating and Hot Water switch ON and OFF according to the set programs.
      • ALL DAY: Central Heating and Hot Water switch ON at the first ON time and OFF at the last OFF time.
      • OFF: Central Heating and Hot Water are permanently OFF.
    2. Wait 15 seconds or press "Home" to confirm and return to Run Mode.
  • Temporary Manual Overrides:

    • Advance Function (ADV): Allows the user to move to the next ON/OFF program event for a "one-off" adjustment without changing the permanent program. This function is available only in AUTO or ALL DAY operating modes when the slider is set to "RUN."

      • To Advance Central Heating: Press "Next" until the radiator symbol(s) for the desired heating zone appear. Press "ADV." This will turn the heating ON if it's in an OFF period, or OFF if it's in an ON period. "ADV" will appear next to the radiator symbol. To cancel, press "ADV" again or wait for the next programmed ON/OFF period.
      • To Advance Hot Water: Press "Next" until the tap symbol appears. Press "ADV." This will turn hot water ON if it's in an OFF period, or OFF if it's in an ON period. "ADV" will appear next to the tap symbol. To cancel, press "ADV" again or wait for the next programmed ON/OFF period.
    • +HR Boost Function: Provides up to 3 hours of extra central heating or hot water without altering the program. This function is available in AUTO, ALL DAY, or OFF operating modes when the slider is set to "RUN." If a boost overlaps a programmed START/ON time in AUTO or ALL DAY mode, the boost will disengage.

      • To Boost Central Heating: Press "Next" until the radiator symbol(s) for the desired heating zone appear. Press "+HR." Each press adds one hour, up to a maximum of three hours. Pressing it a fourth time will switch off the +HR function. The status (+1HR, +2HR, or +3HR) will appear next to the radiator symbol.
      • To Boost Hot Water: Press "Next" until the tap symbol appears. Press "+HR." Each press adds one hour, up to a maximum of three hours. Pressing it a fourth time will switch off the +HR function. The status (+1HR, +2HR, or +3HR) will appear next to the tap symbol.
  • Holiday Mode: Saves energy by reducing the temperature for a specified period (1 to 99 days) while the user is away, resuming normal operation upon return.

    1. Press the "Holiday Mode" button (suitcase icon) to enter Holiday Mode; "d:1" will display.
    2. Use "+/-" buttons to select the number of days (1-99).
    3. Press the "Home" button to confirm. The system will turn OFF for the chosen duration. The display will alternate between the time symbol and the remaining days, which will count down.
    4. Once the countdown finishes, the programmer returns to normal operation. It's advisable to set Holiday Mode for one day less than the actual absence to allow the house to warm up before returning.
    5. To cancel Holiday Mode, press the "Holiday Mode" button again to revert to run mode.
  • Setting the Time and Date: The time and date are factory set and automatically adjust for daylight saving.

    1. Move the slider to "TIME/DATE."

    6. The year date will flash. Use "+/-" to adjust.
  • Setting the Backlight: The backlight can be set to be permanently ON or OFF. It is pre-set to OFF. When OFF, it will illuminate for 15 seconds when a "+/-" button is pressed, then turn off automatically.

    • To change to permanently ON: Move the slider to "TIME/DATE." Press "Next" repeatedly until "Lit" is displayed. Use "+/-" to toggle ON or OFF. Press "Next" or wait 15 seconds to confirm and return to Run Mode.
    • Note: Do not use "Advance" or "+HR Boost" buttons to activate the backlight, as this may engage those functions and turn on the boiler. Only use the "Home" button for backlight activation if not adjusting settings.

Maintenance Features

  • Power Interruption: In the event of a mains supply failure, the screen will go blank. However, the back-up battery ensures that the programmer continues to keep time and retains the stored program. Once power is restored, move the slider to "RUN" to resume normal operation.

  • Resetting the Unit: Pressing the reset button with a non-metallic pointed tool will restore the built-in program and reset the time to 12:00 PM and the date to 01/01/2000. After a reset, the unit will be in OFF operating mode as a safety feature, and the required operating mode must be reselected. Users should be careful not to use excessive force when pressing the reset button, as this could cause it to stick behind the front cover, "freezing" the unit until released by a qualified installer.
