Overview

The Essence SmartCare Care@Home™ C8000 (Model: ES8502HC) is a connected, emergency-response control device designed for personal emergency applications, specifically for monitoring individuals living at home or in assisted-living facilities. It integrates with other Care@Home™ sensor devices to collect information about the resident's daily activities and transmits this data to a monitoring station. The C8000 serves as a central hub for emergency communication and activity monitoring.

Function Description:

The C8000 initiates emergency calls, answers incoming speakerphone calls, and disconnects during speakerphone calls via its prominent EMERGENCY CALL button. It also features a RESET button to cancel active alarm reports, clear reminders, and enable/disable an activity timer. The device includes a high-volume speaker and a sensitive microphone, supporting full-duplex conversations where both parties can speak and hear simultaneously. For visually impaired users, the EMERGENCY CALL and RESET buttons have raised braille characters. The C8000 communicates with the monitoring station using a cellular network and has a rechargeable backup battery to ensure continuous operation even during power outages or communication failures, saving messages and sending them once communication is restored. It monitors peripheral devices for activity, triggers emergency and safety alarms, and allows for remote call-in.

Usage Features:

The C8000 can be set up on a desktop/table or wall-mounted. For optimal performance, it should be placed centrally within the premises, where cellular reception is strong, and the speakerphone can be heard throughout. It should be easily accessible to the resident but not in a location that attracts unauthorized users. To avoid RF interference, it should be kept away from concrete walls and metal obstructions, and at least 2 meters (6 ft.) from peripheral devices. Installation involves ensuring the power switch is OFF, removing the back cover, inserting the SIM card (for cellular models) with contacts facing downward, and inserting the backup battery with the printed side up and contacts pointing towards the C8000 contacts. The power cable is then plugged in and secured, and for US models, the power adapter cube is secured. Finally, the back cover is replaced and secured with a K22X6 screw, and the power switch is turned ON. The Power LED lights green, and the Communication LED lights red upon startup. Emergency alarms can be triggered by pressing the EMERGENCY CALL button on the C8000 or by using various peripheral devices such as the Emergency Pendant Advanced (ES700EPA/ES700EPAJ) with PANIC button and fall detection, or Emergency Pendant (ES700EP/ES700EPP/ES700EPPJ) worn as a pendant or on the wrist. The C8000's LEDs provide operational status:

  • Power LED (Green): Lit for AC power, blinking for battery operation, off for no power.
  • Communication LED (Green): Lit for communication available, blinking for active transmission.
  • Communication LED (Red): Lit for communication failure (no SIM, loss of cellular network, GSM connectivity test failed), blinking for blocked transmission.
  • Communication LED (Orange): Lit for active conversation.
  • RESET LED (Orange): Lit for three seconds when button pressed, flashing for vocal reminder.
  • Trouble LED (Red): Lit and C8000 beeps for malfunction or lost communication with monitoring station; blinking and C8000 beeps for peripheral supervision lost or low battery power. Pressing RESET stops the beeps.
  • Activity LED (Blue ring): Lit when activity timer is on, off when activity timer is off, blinking when activity timer expires in less than 15 minutes.
  • EMERGENCY CALL LED (Red): Blinking for alert in progress, lit for message acknowledged.
  • Combination of LEDs (RESET, Trouble, Activity, Communication): Indicates half-duplex call with C8000 microphone active and speaker inactive, showing Communication (orange), RESET (orange), Trouble (red), and Activity Timer (blue).

Maintenance Features:

C8000 maintenance includes weekly inspection, software updates, communications maintenance, backup battery replacement, and resetting the C8000.

  • Weekly Inspection: The system should be checked once per week.
  • Communications Maintenance: If cellular communication quality becomes unreliable, the cellular service provider should be consulted to replace the SIM card or repair the connection. After replacing the SIM card, the C8000 must be reset.
  • Replacing the Backup Battery: The backup battery charges automatically when the C8000 is connected to AC power and lasts up to three years. It should be replaced when the C8000 reports a low battery. Caution is advised when replacing the battery to avoid damage from incorrect installation; only the same or equivalent type recommended by the manufacturer should be used, and used batteries must be discarded responsibly.
  • Resetting the C8000: To reset the C8000, turn the power switch OFF, remove the back cover, disconnect the power cable, remove the backup battery, wait 20 seconds, replace the backup battery, connect the power cable, replace the back cover, and turn the power switch ON. During a reset, the C8000 does not communicate with the server or peripherals.
  • Restoring Factory Settings: This process removes all paired peripherals and resets all parameters to factory defaults. It involves pressing and holding the RESET button, then inserting a probe or paperclip into the TEST pinhole and pressing the button inside for five seconds. The C8000 LEDs will flash and it will beep three times to confirm. This should only be done after consulting Essence SmartCare technical support.
  • Removing All Peripherals: To remove all peripherals, press and hold the PAIRING button for five seconds, then press and hold the RESET button for five seconds. The C8000 will instruct to press the PAIRING button again to confirm removal. A voice message will confirm that all devices were removed. This action requires re-pairing all peripherals.
  • Testing Peripherals: The C8000 allows testing paired peripherals. To test emergency devices, press the PAIRING button twice to enter "test mode." The power, communication, and trouble LEDs will flash. Then, press the PANIC button on a pendant, the SOS button on an SPB, or the EMERGENCY CALL button/pull the emergency cord on an SPD. The C8000 will confirm with a voice message. To exit test mode, press the RESET button.
  • Troubleshooting: If the C8000 does not respond to a triggered device, try moving the device and retesting. Check the CMS (Central Monitoring Station) to ensure the Trouble LED is not disabled. Log on to CMS, navigate to Main menu > Voice & LED, and ensure "Disable" is not selected for the Panel's Trouble LED. To disable the Trouble LED while allowing emergency device testing, clear all choices.
