Overview
The Wall Switch Sensor (OWS)
combines a switch for manual control
of lights and an occupancy sensor
that uses standard passive infrared
(PIR) or Dual Technology to monitor
occupancy and transmit status
wirelessly.
The sensor fits well in applications
where energy codes require the lights
to be manually turned ON and
automatically turned OFF when the
space is vacant. It is available as a
line-powered or battery-powered
model. The line-powered models are
no-neutral conductor devices that
connect to line voltage and earth
ground. Battery-powered models can operate for 12 years in typical office
use conditions.
Model Description
OWS-IR-UW-120/277 PIRsensor detection, line-powered
OWS-DT-UW-120/277 Dual Tech sensor detection, line-powered
OWS-IR-UW-BTY PIR sensor detection, battery-powered
OWS-DT-UW-BTY Dual Tech sensor detection, battery-powered
The Dual Tech models use PIR and passive microphone technology to
provide full coverage of audible human activity. Innovative noise filtering
prevents false triggers that could keep lights on in empty spaces.
This document covers installation, testing, and settings that apply to all
OWS models. The product package includes the sensor and two
mounting screws. Battery-powered models include non-replaceable
lithium batteries. A white faceplate is sold separately (part number:
HW8563).

Overview

The Echoflex Wall Switch Sensor (OWS) is a versatile device that integrates a manual light switch with an occupancy sensor, designed to wirelessly transmit status information. It's particularly well-suited for applications where energy codes mandate manual light activation and automatic deactivation when a space becomes vacant. The OWS is available in both line-powered and battery-powered configurations. Line-powered models are no-neutral conductor devices, connecting directly to line voltage and earth ground. Battery-powered models offer an impressive operational lifespan of up to 12 years under typical office use conditions.

Function Description:

The primary function of the OWS is to provide both manual control of lighting and automated occupancy sensing. It utilizes either Passive Infrared (PIR) or Dual Technology (DT) to detect occupancy. When occupancy is detected, or the switch is manually activated, the sensor wirelessly transmits this status to a linked controller, allowing for automated lighting control.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models:
    • OWS-IR-UW-120/277: PIR sensor detection, line-powered.
    • OWS-DT-UW-120/277: Dual Tech sensor detection, line-powered.
    • OWS-IR-UW-BTY: PIR sensor detection, battery-powered.
    • OWS-DT-UW-BTY: Dual Tech sensor detection, battery-powered.
  • Power: Line-powered (120/277 VAC) or battery-powered (lithium batteries, non-replaceable).
  • Sensing Technology:
    • PIR (Passive Infrared): Detects motion in the heat range of human bodies. More sensitive to movements crossing detection zones.
    • Dual Technology (DT): Combines PIR with passive microphone technology for enhanced coverage of audible human activity. Features innovative noise filtering to prevent false triggers.
  • Operating Temperature: -10°C to 45°C (14°F to 113°F).
  • Relative Humidity: 5%-92% (non-condensing).
  • Installation Height: 90–150 cm (3–5 ft) from the floor.
  • Wireless Range: Up to 24 m (80 ft) to linked receivers or controllers. Repeaters can extend this range.
  • Wiring (Line-powered models): Black (line) wire for 120 or 277 VAC power, Green (ground) wire for building ground. No-neutral conductor design (white neutral wire not required). Minimum wire specifications: 300 V, 14 AWG, 60°C (140°F).
  • Occupancy Timer (Sensor): Default 20 minutes (configurable). Resets with each audio or PIR event.
  • Audio Enabled Timer (DT models): 60 minutes (not configurable). Resets with each PIR detection.
  • Vacancy Message Transmission:
    • PIR-only models: After 200 seconds of inactivity, then every 1000 seconds.
    • DT models: After 20 minutes (default) of no detection.
  • Signal Strength (Range Confirmation):
    • Green LED: -41 to -70 dBm (best).
    • Yellow LED: -70 to -80 dBm (good).
    • Red LED: -80 to -95 dBm (poor, move closer).
    • No LED: No linked controllers detected.
  • Certifications: FCC Part 15 Class A digital device, ISED license-exempt RSSs.

Usage Features:

  • Manual Control: Features a rocker switch for manual ON/OFF control of lights.
  • Occupancy Sensing: Automatically detects human presence using PIR or Dual Technology.
  • Wireless Communication: Transmits status wirelessly to a compatible controller.
  • Dual Technology (DT) Models: Provide enhanced detection by combining PIR with audio sensing, offering full coverage of audible human activity. Noise filtering prevents false triggers.
  • Sensor Coverage:
    • Small motion detection: 3.6 m (12 ft) (e.g., hand movements).
    • Large motion detection: Up to 11 m (36 ft).
    • Audio detection (DT models): Up to 7.3 m (24 ft).
  • Link to Controller: Both the occupancy sensor and the manual switch must be linked separately to a compatible controller. The linking process involves pressing a [Teach] button on the sensor and a [Learn] button on the controller.
  • Configurable Settings (via [Teach] button and LEDs):
    • PIR Sensitivity: Adjustable (High, Medium, Low).
    • Audio Sensitivity (DT models): Adjustable (Automatic, Low, Disabled).
    • Sensor Occupancy Timer (DT models): Configurable duration (Disabled, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 minutes).
    • LED Display: Enable or disable blinking LEDs for motion detection.
  • Walk Test: Verifies the boundaries of the sensor's range. The red LED blinks on motion detection, and the green LED blinks on sound detection (DT models).
  • Range Confirmation (battery-powered models only): Quantifies the strength of the wireless signal to a linked controller, displayed via LED blink colors.
  • Occupancy/Vacancy Logic:
    • PIR-only: PIR detection or manual control keeps lights on when occupied. If configured for occupancy, PIR or manual control can change state to occupied when vacant. If configured for vacancy, only manual control can change state to occupied when vacant.
    • Dual Tech: PIR and audio detection can reset both sensor and controller occupancy timers when occupied. Only PIR detection or manual control can change state to occupied when vacant (if configured for occupancy). Audio detection resets the sensor's Occupancy Timer but not the Audio Enabled Timer. A 40-second grace timer allows sound to reset the Occupancy Timer after a vacancy message is sent.

Maintenance Features:

  • Restore Defaults (battery-powered models only): Allows restoring all factory default settings. This action is irreversible.
  • Installation Considerations:
    • Install in dry indoor locations, avoiding outdoors or near gas/electric heaters.
    • Avoid high-density construction materials or large metal objects that may disrupt wireless transmissions.
    • Do not locate where it can easily sense movement outside the intended space (e.g., hallways).
    • Requires installation in an electrical junction box or wireway.
    • Servicing should be performed by qualified service personnel.
  • Battery Life: Battery-powered models offer up to 12 years of operation in typical office use. Batteries are non-replaceable.
  • Faceplate: A white faceplate (part number: HW8563) is sold separately.
