Overview

This document is an installation manual for Downflow/Upflow Electric Furnaces, specifically the EB Series models. It provides comprehensive instructions for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of these units, emphasizing safety and compliance with various codes.

Function Description:

The EB Series electric furnaces are designed for both downflow and upflow applications, providing heating for residential spaces. They are equipped with a blower and control system that makes them ready for add-on air conditioning and heat pump systems. The furnaces utilize electric heating elements to generate warmth, and their internal components are protected by circuit breakers. The design allows for flexible installation, including in closets or alcoves, with specific clearance requirements to ensure proper airflow and accessibility for servicing. The manual also details how to convert the furnace from a downflow to an upflow configuration, expanding its versatility.

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual provides detailed electrical and blower performance data for various EB Series models (EB10B, EB12B, EB15B, EB17B, EB20B, EB23B).

Electrical Data (Table 4):

  • Voltage: Rated at 240 volts, 60 Hz, single phase.
  • D.O.E. Output Capacity: Ranges from 34,000 BTU (EB10B) to 77,000 BTU (EB23B) at 240 VAC.
  • KW Output: Ranges from 10.0 KW (EB10B) to 22.6 KW (EB23B) at 240 VAC.
  • Element Capacity @ 240 VAC: Ranges from 9.6 KW / 40.0 AMPS (EB10B) to 21.6 KW / 90.0 AMPS (EB23B).
  • Motor AMPS @ 240 V: 4.0 Maximum for all models.
  • Circuit Load AMPS @ 240 V: Varies by model and circuit (e.g., EB10B: CKT 1 - 44.0, CKT 2 - N/A; EB23B: CKT 1 - 47.3, CKT 2 - 46.7).
  • Wire Size (75°C Copper): Specified for single and dual branch circuits (e.g., #6 for EB10B single branch, #6 for EB23B dual branch CKT 1).
  • Wire Size (60°C Copper): Specified for single and dual branch circuits (e.g., #6 for EB10B single branch, #4 for EB23B dual branch CKT 1).
  • Max. Fuse Size (or CB) - AMPS: Ranges from 60 AMPS (EB10B) to 125 AMPS (EB23B) for single branch, and 30-60 AMPS for dual branch circuits.
  • Ground Wire Size: #6 or #8 for single branch, #10 for dual branch.
  • Circuit Breakers: Equipped with one or two 60 amp circuit breakers for internal wiring protection and power disconnection.

Blower Performance (Table 3):

  • CFM (STD. Air) at various static pressures (Inches of WC):
    • Low Speed Heating (EB10, 12, 15): 945 CFM at 0.0" WC down to 705 CFM at 0.8" WC.
    • Medium Speed Heating (EB17, 20, 23): 1160 CFM at 0.0" WC down to 935 CFM at 0.8" WC.
    • Medium High with A-Coil in place: 1340 CFM at 0.0" WC down to 876 CFM at 0.8" WC.
    • High with A-Coil in place: 1573 CFM at 0.0" WC down to 1019 CFM at 0.8" WC.

Usage Features:

  • Downflow/Upflow Convertible: The furnace is designed for downflow applications but can be converted to upflow using specific accessory kits (3500-5451* Adapter Box and/or 3500-7211* Upflow Flange Plate Kit).
  • A/C and Heat Pump Ready: All models are equipped with a blower and control system suitable for add-on air conditioning (up to 4 tons) and heat pump (up to 3 1/2 tons). For higher capacities (up to 5 tons A/C, 4 tons HP), an accessory blower package (3500-7901*) is required.
  • Thermostat Compatibility: Uses a 4-wire thermostat for heating and cooling. The manual specifies pre-set heat anticipator settings (0.4 Amps) and guidelines for thermostat placement (52 to 66 inches above the floor on an inside wall).
  • Duct System Design: Emphasizes designing the distribution system to match the furnace's static pressure rating for proper airflow.
  • Return Air Requirements: Specifies minimum free area openings for return air based on furnace type (heating only, A/C up to 4-tons, A/C up to 5-tons) and provides guidelines for return air grille placement.
  • Zero Clearance to Combustible Material: Approved for zero clearance to combustible material on the furnace exterior and ductwork, with specific return air clearance exceptions.
