The Exmark Mulch Kit Quest® 42, Kit No. 116-9414, is an accessory designed to convert an Exmark mower into a mulching mower. Before beginning any work, it is crucial to ensure the mower is safely prepared: all moving parts must be stopped, the parking brake engaged, and the ignition key removed. For safety during installation, the front end of the machine should be raised and supported with adequate jack stands. The manual strongly cautions against relying solely on mechanical or hydraulic jacks for support, emphasizing the importance of using proper jack stands to prevent injury.
Once the mower is safely elevated, the underside of the mower deck should be scraped clean, especially if the mower has been used previously. The existing blades are then removed and retained, as their hardware will be reused for the mulch blades. The existing discharge baffle and its mounting hardware are also removed and retained; this baffle will be needed if the mulch kit is ever removed and the mower is converted back to side discharge. The mounting hardware from the removed discharge baffle is then reinstalled into the deck holes where the baffle was originally located.
The baffle assembly from the kit is loosely installed to the right-hand side of the mower deck using a carriage bolt and two flange nuts. Simultaneously, two plug bolts and nuts are removed from the deck to make way for the kicker plate. The kicker plate is then secured to the left-hand side of the mower deck using four flange nuts. After all components are loosely installed, all hardware is tightened to ensure a secure fit.
The final step in the installation is to install the specialized mulching blades. The manual stresses the importance of correct blade installation, warning that incorrect installation or failure to use original components could lead to serious personal injury or death if a blade or blade component is thrown from under the deck. Users are directed to consult the Operator's manual for specific instructions on blade maintenance and installation. Once the mulching blades are installed, the jack stands are carefully removed, and the unit is lowered to the ground. The spark plug cable(s) and ignition key are reinstalled, signifying the successful conversion of the Exmark unit to a mulching mower.
The manual provides clear instructions for converting the mower back to side discharge, which can be considered a maintenance or operational flexibility feature. If a user wishes to revert to side discharge, the process involves safely removing the kicker plate and baffle assembly. The original discharge baffle, which was retained during the initial installation, is then reinstalled.
