Overview

The Fastcabling PoE Powered Switch is a network device designed to provide Power over Ethernet (PoE) capabilities, allowing for both data and power transmission over a single Ethernet cable. This guide is intended to help users understand, install, and troubleshoot their PoE powered switch, ensuring optimal performance and safety.

Function Description

The primary function of this device is to act as a PoE powered switch, meaning it draws power from another PoE source (such as a PoE switch or injector) or an external DC power supply, and then distributes both power and data to connected IP devices. This design is particularly useful in scenarios where a power outlet is not readily available near the switch's installation point, or when extending a PoE network. The switch features multiple RJ45 ports that support 10/100/1000 Ethernet speeds and are compliant with IEEE802.3af/at PoE standards. One dedicated RJ45 port (labeled 5S) is specifically designed to receive power from an upstream PoE source, supporting IEEE802.3af/at/bt PoE standards for uplink. This allows the switch itself to be powered by PoE, making deployment more flexible.

The switch facilitates the connection of various IP devices such as IP cameras, VoIP phones, or wireless access points, providing them with both network connectivity and power. This eliminates the need for separate power adapters for each device, simplifying cabling and installation. The device is designed for indoor applications and recommends the use of pure copper UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) cables of cat5e or higher category to ensure maximum transmission distance and bandwidth.

Usage Features

The Fastcabling PoE Powered Switch offers several features that enhance its usability and flexibility in network deployments:

  • PoE Powered Operation: A key feature is its ability to be powered by another PoE switch or injector, or an external DC power supply (48V-57V DC). This flexibility in power sourcing makes it adaptable to different installation environments. When powered by a conventional PoE switch (IEEE802.3at PoE+), the switch has a 20W power budget. However, if powered by an IEEE802.3bt compliant PoE injector (like Fastcabling's 90W PoE injector), it can achieve a higher power budget of 65W, enabling it to power more demanding devices or a greater number of devices.
  • Plug-and-Play Installation: The switch is designed for straightforward installation. Users simply connect an Ethernet patch cord from a PoE source (or external power supply) to the dedicated uplink port (port #5) on the PoE powered switch. Once the power LEDs illuminate, IP devices can be connected to the other PoE ports. The corresponding LINK/ACT LEDs will turn red and flash, indicating successful power-up and data exchange.
  • LED Indicators for Status Monitoring: The front panel of the switch is equipped with various LED indicators to provide real-time status updates:
    • Power LED (Yellow): Indicates whether the device is powered on.
    • Link/ACT LEDs (Red): For ports 1-5, these LEDs indicate network link status (on) and data exchange (flashing). An off state means no link.
    • PoE LEDs (Yellow): For ports 1-4, these LEDs indicate active 48V standard PoE. An off state means no PoE. These indicators help users quickly assess the operational status of the switch and connected devices, aiding in troubleshooting.
  • Indoor Application: The product is specifically designed for indoor use, emphasizing the importance of not exposing it to rain or moisture to prevent electrical shock or fire hazards.
  • Wall-Mountable Design: The switch includes two wall-mounted spots at the bottom, allowing for flexible placement on a flat, horizontal surface or mounted on a wall.
  • ESD Grounding: The back panel features an ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) grounding point, complete with screws and washers, for enhanced protection against electrostatic damage.

Maintenance Features

While the Fastcabling PoE Powered Switch is designed for reliable operation, understanding its maintenance aspects and troubleshooting guidelines is important:

  • No User-Serviceable Parts: The equipment contains no operator-serviceable parts. All servicing should be performed by a qualified service technician. This ensures safety and prevents damage to the device.
  • Electrical Safety Information: The guide provides crucial electrical safety information, emphasizing compliance with voltage, frequency, and current requirements. It warns against using unapproved power cords or adapter plugs that defeat grounding, as this can lead to serious injury or death. Proper grounding is essential for safety certification.
  • Troubleshooting PoE Issues: The manual addresses common PoE issues, such as PoE LED indicators continuously turning ON and OFF. This typically signifies that the PoE switch cannot verify the IP device, and thus refuses to release power. This could be due to a non-compliant IP device (not meeting IEEE802.3af/at standards) or a faulty cable, leading to an unsuccessful verification process. This guidance helps users diagnose and resolve common power delivery problems.
  • Avoiding Network Loops: A critical note advises against connecting two uplink ports to the same core switch or router. Doing so can create a ring network, which can block all network access and cause significant disruption. This highlights a key network configuration best practice to maintain network stability.
  • Support Resources: Fastcabling provides a help site (fastcabling.com/support/) where users can find additional help guides and video tutorials for setting up their PoE Powered Switch. This resource serves as a valuable self-help tool for troubleshooting and optimizing device usage.
  • Declaration of Conformity: The product comes with a Declaration of Conformity, stating that it meets all essential requirements of the EMC Directive 2014/30/EU and complies with various EN and AS/NZS standards. This ensures the product's adherence to regulatory safety and electromagnetic compatibility standards.

In summary, the Fastcabling PoE Powered Switch is a versatile and user-friendly device that simplifies network deployment by integrating power and data transmission. Its design focuses on ease of use, flexible power options, and clear status indicators, while also providing essential safety and troubleshooting guidelines to ensure a stable and secure network environment.
