Overview

The device described in this manual is a 7" Variable Speed Polisher, model number 45134. It is designed for polishing surfaces, particularly vehicles, to achieve a clean and waxed finish.

Function Description:

The polisher is an electrical power tool used for applying wax and buffing surfaces. It features a rotating spindle to which a backing pad and foam pad or polishing bonnet are attached. The variable speed control allows the user to select appropriate speeds for different polishing stages, with slower speeds recommended for initial wax application to prevent damage to the paint. The tool is designed to be held with two hands, utilizing an auxiliary handle (either a D-handle or a standard angle grinder side handle, if available) for maximum control and to resist kickback forces. The polishing process involves applying wax evenly to the surface using a foam pad, allowing it to dry, and then buffing off the dried wax with a polishing bonnet. The tool is equipped with a lock-on button for continuous operation, reducing user fatigue.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Motor: 120V ~ 60Hz, 9.2 Amp
  • No-Load Speed: 200 - 3,350 RPM (Variable Speed)
  • Buffing Diameter: 7"
  • Accessory Requirements:
    • Rated to at least 3377 RPM
    • No larger than 7" in diameter
    • Fitted with a threaded opening of 5/8" x 11 TPI
    • Undamaged backing pad

Usage Features:

  • Auxiliary Handles: The polisher can be used with a D-handle (included) or a standard angle grinder side handle (not included). The D-handle can be installed for either right-hand or left-hand use, providing enhanced control and stability during operation. Proper installation of the auxiliary handle is crucial for safe operation.
  • Backing Pad/Foam Pad Installation: The backing pad threads onto the spindle and is secured by pressing and holding the Spindle Lock Button. A clean foam pad is then placed securely onto the backing pad for wax application, followed by a polishing bonnet for buffing.
  • Work Area Setup: A clean, well-lit work area free from distractions (children, pets) and hazardous objects is recommended. Loose workpieces should be secured with a vise or clamps. The power cord should be routed safely to prevent tripping hazards and ensure free movement.
  • Polishing Process:
    1. Ensure the surface to be polished is clean and free of contaminants.
    2. Attach a clean foam pad to the backing pad.
    3. Apply 2 tablespoons of wax (not included) evenly to the foam pad, avoiding direct application to the vehicle surface. The amount of wax may vary based on vehicle size.
    4. Select a slow speed (1-4) using the speed dial for polishing. Higher speeds can damage paint.
    5. Start and stop the polisher while it is held firmly against the vehicle surface to prevent the pad/bonnet from being thrown off.
    6. Apply wax to flat surfaces using broad, sweeping, crisscross strokes.
    7. Add additional wax to the pad as needed, but avoid using too much wax, as it can make application difficult, prolong drying time, and reduce foam pad life.
    8. After wax application, turn off and unplug the polisher. Remove the foam pad and manually apply wax to hard-to-reach areas.
    9. Allow sufficient time for the wax to dry.
    10. Attach a clean polishing bonnet to the backing pad, securing it tightly with its string.
    11. Start the polisher and buff off the dried wax.
    12. After buffing, turn off and unplug the polisher. Remove the polishing bonnet and use it to remove wax from hard-to-reach areas.
  • Safety Precautions: Operators and others in the work area must wear ANSI Z87.1 compliant safety glasses with side shields. Ear and head protection are also recommended. Loose clothing, jewelry, and long hair should be secured to prevent entanglement with moving parts. The tool should not be operated while tired or under the influence of substances. Avoid unintentional starting by keeping fingers off the trigger when not in use. Maintain proper footing and balance. Remove adjusting keys or wrenches before turning on the tool.
  • Electrical Safety: Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces. Do not expose the tool to rain or wet conditions. Do not abuse the power cord. When operating outdoors, use a cord suitable for outdoor use. If operating in damp locations, use a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protected supply.
  • Kickback Prevention: Maintain a firm grip, use the auxiliary handle, and position the body to resist kickback forces. Keep hands away from rotating accessories. Avoid positioning the body in the tool's kickback path. Exercise caution around corners and sharp edges, which can snag accessories. Ensure polishing bonnet strings are tucked away to prevent entanglement.
  • Vibration Safety: The tool vibrates during use. Prolonged exposure can cause physical injury. Users should consult a doctor, especially if pregnant, have circulatory issues, past hand injuries, or nervous system disorders. Smoking should be avoided during use as nicotine reduces blood supply to hands. Wear suitable gloves, use tools with the lowest vibration when possible, include vibration-free periods, and grip the tool lightly. Maintain the tool as instructed, and stop use immediately if abnormal vibration occurs.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Inspection: Before each use, inspect the tool for loose hardware, misalignment or binding of moving parts, cracked or broken parts, damaged electrical wiring, or any other condition affecting safe operation.
  • Cleaning: After use, wipe external surfaces with a clean cloth. Periodically blow dust and grit out of motor vents using dry compressed air, wearing ANSI-approved safety goggles and NIOSH-approved breathing protection. Use a clean cloth and mild detergent to clean the polisher body; do not use solvents or immerse any part in liquid.
  • Pad and Bonnet Care: Remove the foam pad from the backing pad when not in use to allow it to dry and retain its shape. Wash foam pads with mild soap and water before storing. Polishing bonnets can be machine washed in cold water with mild detergent but should not be put in the dryer.
  • Tightness Check: Periodically recheck all nuts, bolts, and screws for tightness.
  • Carbon Brush Maintenance: Carbon brushes may require maintenance if motor performance decreases or stops.
    1. Remove carbon brush covers on each side of the motor housing.
    2. Remove brushes, noting their orientation for reinstallation.
    3. Replace brushes if worn down by more than 1/2.
    4. Clean old brushes by rubbing contact areas with a pencil eraser.
    5. Reinsert old brushes in the same orientation to reduce wear.
    6. Ensure carbon portions contact the motor armature and springs face away from the motor and operate freely.
    7. Replace carbon brush covers, do not over-tighten. New brushes may spark initially until they conform to the armature.
  • Cord Replacement: If the power cord is damaged, it must be replaced only by a qualified service technician.
  • Tool Service: Only use accessories identified by the manufacturer for the specific tool model. Use of unauthorized parts or failure to follow maintenance instructions can create injury risks. Tool service must be performed by qualified repair personnel.
