Overview

The FeherGuard Premium (FG7B) is an above-ground solar cover reel system designed to simplify the handling and storage of solar pool covers. This system is engineered for ease of use, durability, and efficient operation, making it a practical accessory for maintaining above-ground pools.

Function Description:

The primary function of the FeherGuard Premium (FG7B) solar cover reel system is to facilitate the deployment and retrieval of solar pool covers. By providing a convenient mechanism to roll and unroll the cover, it eliminates the strenuous effort typically associated with manual cover handling. This not only saves time and labor but also helps extend the life of the solar cover by preventing damage from improper folding or dragging. The system is designed to be placed at the end or mid-point of the pool, allowing the cover to be easily rolled up when not in use and unrolled when needed to retain heat and reduce evaporation.

Important Technical Specifications:

The system is available in various configurations to accommodate different pool sizes and cover weights. Key components include:

  • Tubes: The core of the reel system consists of multiple tubes that form the main roller. These tubes come in different lengths and diameters depending on the model.
    • L18 or L18M (mill):* 3 tubes (1 center & 2 end)
    • L18/AG24EX: 5 tubes (2 center, 2 end & 1 joiner). This configuration supports a maximum extension of 24' (7.3 m) and a maximum cover weight of 30# (13.6 kg) for 2 1/2" diameter tubes. Minimum insertion for end tubes into center tubes is 16" (40 cm).
    • L18M/AG24EXM (mill):* 5 tubes (2 center, 2 end & 1 joiner)
    • AGHD28: 5 tubes (2 center, 2 end & 1 joiner). This heavy-duty configuration supports a maximum extension of 28'6" (8.6 m) and a maximum cover weight of 40# (18.18 kg) for 3" diameter tubes. Minimum insertion for end tubes into center tubes is 9" (22.5 cm).
  • Ends & Hardware:
    • 2 Ends (Tees)
    • 2 Handles
    • 2 Cones
    • 2 Bearings
    • 2 Plugs for 2 1/2" Tube Sets
    • Hardware Kit: 10 Plastic Screws, 20 Strap Plates, 4 Wing nuts & bolts, 10-26" Straps, 25 Metal Self-Drilling Screws, and a Driver Bit.
  • Materials: Tubes are typically made from materials that may tarnish over time (mill tubes), with anodized options available to reduce tarnishing. The system components are designed for outdoor use and resistance to pool chemicals.

Usage Features:

  • Placement: For round pools, the reel should be located across the center or off-center, with cover extensions folded in. For oval or rectangular pools, it should be placed at the widest point. Cones, which support the reel, must be level and on the outer side of the top rail, ensuring adequate space for tightening wing nuts.
  • Assembly: The assembly process involves several steps:
    1. Tube Assembly: Tubes are joined together, ensuring a minimum insertion of end tubes into center tubes (9" or 16" depending on the model). Tubes must be locked in position before installing self-drilling screws. Screws are installed at specific locations (C1, C2, C3, D) along drill lines, ensuring not to pre-drill or overtighten.
    2. End Assembly: Handles, bearings, and plugs are assembled into the tee ends. A self-drilling screw secures the plug to the tube.
    3. Strap Attachment to Tubes: Strap plates are attached to the end tubes, typically 6" (15 cm) in from the inside edge of the top rail, and then spaced evenly along the drill lines. Self-drilling screws are used, again without pre-drilling or overtightening.
    4. Strap Attachment to Cover: Depending on the pool setup, straps are attached to the solar cover.
      • Pool End Placement (Rectangular Pools): The cover is laid flat (bubbles down), and plastic screws pierce the cover 1" (2.5 cm) back from the edge, securing it to the strap plate.
      • Mid-Pool Placement (Round or Irregularly Shaped Pools): The cover is folded into a "pinched fold" (bubbles in), and plastic screws pierce both sides of the cover 1" (2.5 cm) back from the fold, securing it to the strap plate.
  • Cover Removal Feature: The system includes a "Lift off and Swing" removal feature, allowing for easy access to the pool.
  • Strap Adjustment: When rolling up the cover, all straps must take hold simultaneously. Strap lengths can be adjusted as necessary.
  • Safety: Solar Reel Systems are designed solely for removing solar covers and are not intended to support people or other weight. The solar cover must be completely removed before entering the pool; swimming with a partially covered pool is not recommended.

Maintenance Features:

  • Screw Tightening: Periodically check and tighten all screws to ensure the system remains secure and stable.
  • Storage: The solar reel can be stored outdoors for the winter. Disassembly for storage is not recommended.
  • Tarnishing: Mill tubes may tarnish over time. Anodized tubes are available as an option to help reduce tarnishing and maintain appearance.
  • Warranty: FeherGuard offers a five-year warranty on the Premium Above Ground Solar Cover Reel System, covering defects in workmanship or material under normal use. This warranty excludes consumables such as straps, strap plates, and screws. The warranty is void if there is evidence of purchaser abuse, improper installation, or normal wear. Registration of the product within 30 days of purchase is required to validate the warranty.

Accessories (Available from Dealer):

  • FG-FASPAK (Tube & Blanket Fastening Kit): 10 sets of tube & blanket fasteners.
  • FG-BS2 (Blanket Straps): 2 x 54" straps.
  • FG-RS50 (Reel Strapping): 1 - 50' roll.
