Overview

The Fellowes Powershred DS-2 is a cross-cut paper shredder designed for home and office environments, offering a blend of security, convenience, and safety features. Its primary function is to shred paper, credit cards, CDs/DVDs, staples, and small paper clips into small, unreadable particles, ensuring the secure disposal of sensitive information.

Function Description:

The shredder operates with a simple control switch that allows users to select between "Auto-On" (green), "Reverse" (R), and "Off" (0) settings. In "Auto-On" mode, the shredder automatically starts when paper is inserted into the entry. The "Reverse" function is crucial for clearing paper jams, while "Off" completely powers down the unit. A dedicated "Disconnect Power Switch" (H) provides an additional layer of safety, allowing for immediate shutdown in emergencies.

A key safety feature is the integrated SafeSense® Technology (B). This system automatically stops the shredder immediately when hands touch the paper opening, preventing accidental injury. The SafeSense® indicator illuminates when active and working properly, providing visual confirmation of its operational status. An override switch (J) is also present, likely for specific operational needs or troubleshooting, though its exact function isn't detailed in the provided excerpt.

The shredder is designed for continuous operation for up to 4 minutes, after which it will trigger a 20-minute cool-down period to prevent overheating. An "Overheat Indicator" (3, red) illuminates when the shredder has exceeded its maximum operating temperature, signaling the need for a cool-down period before further use.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Shred Type: Cross-Cut
  • Shred Size: 5/32 in. x 2 in. (4mm x 50mm)
  • Maximum Sheets per Pass: 8 sheets (20 lb., 8.5 in. x 11 in. paper at 120v, 60 Hz, 3.5Amps)
  • Maximum Cards per Pass: 1
  • Paper Width: 9 in. / 229mm
  • Continuous Operation Time: Up to 4 minutes
  • Cool-down Period (after continuous operation): 20 minutes
  • Recommended Maximum Daily Usage Rates: 80 sheets, 5 credit cards
  • Operating Environment: 50 - 80 degrees Fahrenheit (10 - 26 degrees Celsius) and 40-80% relative humidity.
  • Power Requirements: Must be plugged into a properly grounded wall outlet or socket of the voltage and amperage designated on the label. Energy converters, transformers, or extension cords should not be used with this product.

Usage Features:

  • Ease of Use: Simple three-position control switch (Auto-On, Reverse, Off) for straightforward operation.
  • Versatility: Capable of shredding paper, credit cards, CDs/DVDs, staples, and small paper clips.
  • Safety: SafeSense® Technology provides immediate shutdown upon hand contact with the paper entry. A disconnect power switch offers emergency shutdown.
  • Bin Full Indicator (F): Alerts the user when the waste bin (G) needs to be emptied.
  • Waste Opening (E): Clearly marked for paper insertion.
  • Handle (I) and Grips (K): Facilitate easy handling and emptying of the shredder head.

Maintenance Features:

  • Oiling Shredder: Regular oiling is recommended for peak performance of all cross-cut shredders. The manual advises oiling each time the waste bin is emptied to prevent diminished sheet capacity, intrusive noise, and potential stoppage. The process involves setting the shredder to "Off," applying non-aerosol vegetable oil (like Fellowes 35250) across the entry, and then pressing and holding "Reverse" (R) for 2-3 seconds.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a dedicated section for troubleshooting, including instructions for clearing paper jams. For a paper jam, users are instructed to press and hold "Reverse" for 2-3 seconds, alternate slowly back and forth, set to "Off," gently pull uncut paper from the entry, unplug, then plug back in, and finally press and hold "Reverse."
  • Overheat Indicator (3, red): Provides a visual cue when the shredder needs to cool down, preventing damage from prolonged use.
  • Cleaning and Servicing: Users are advised to unplug the shredder before cleaning or servicing.
  • Warranty: Fellowes offers a 1-year limited warranty on parts and service, and a 1-year warranty on cutting blades, from the date of purchase by the original consumer. This warranty covers defects in material and workmanship, with repair or replacement as the sole remedy. It does not cover abuse, mishandling, failure to comply with usage standards, improper power supply, or unauthorized repair.

Safety Warnings:

The manual emphasizes several critical safety instructions:

  • Keep away from children and pets.
  • Keep hands, foreign objects (gloves, jewelry, clothing, hair) away from shredder openings.
  • Never use aerosol products, petroleum-based lubricants, or other flammable products on or near the shredder.
  • Do not use canned air on the shredder.
  • Do not use if damaged or defective; do not disassemble.
  • Do not place near or over heat source or water.
  • Always set to "Off" or unplug when not in use.
  • Avoid touching exposed cutting blades under the shredder head.
  • Do not shred greeting cards with sound chips or batteries due to fire hazard.
  • For indoor use only.
  • Ensure the shredder is plugged into a properly grounded wall outlet of the correct voltage and amperage.
  • The Disconnect Power Switch (H) must be in the ON (-) position for operation; move to OFF (0) for emergency stop.

The Fellowes Powershred DS-2 is a robust and user-friendly shredder designed with safety and efficiency in mind for personal and small office document destruction.
