4.3 Applying the Backboard
1. Follow local EMS guidelines and procedures
for stabilizing patient before placing him/her
on backboard.
2. Apply any appropriate cervical or extrication
collars for additional head and neck support.
3. Follow local EMS procedures for applying
backboard.
4. Secure patient on backboard with restraints
(not supplied).
5. Before moving backboard with patient on it,
always check that restraints are properly
arranged and restraint buckles are securely
fastened.
When using restraints with speed clips,
check that speed clips are securely attached
to speed-clip pins.
6. Use as many helpers as needed to safely lift
and carry weight of backboard and patient.

4.4 Using Additional Help
When lifting and carrying heavy patients,
operators may need more than two helpers.
Operators should maintain control of the
backboard and direct the helpers.
The chart that follows shows suggested
placement for operators and helpers.
