The Ferrum OOR is a high-performance headphone amplifier designed to deliver exceptional audio quality. It features a truly balanced signal path, ensuring pristine sound reproduction whether using XLR or RCA inputs. The device is built with a discrete Class A/B topology in its power stage, optimized for superior control and ultra-fast operation across the entire bandwidth. The design emphasizes transparency, aiming to provide a balanced and clear sound signature that minimizes listening fatigue.
Function Description:
The OOR serves primarily as a headphone amplifier, capable of driving a wide range of headphones to their full potential. It also functions as a preamplifier, with RCA and XLR outputs that can be connected to external amplifiers or active speakers.
- XLR Input: Balanced input for high-quality audio sources.
- RCA Input: Unbalanced input for various audio sources.
- DC Input (2.5/5.5 mm): Standard DC input for power, compatible with other PSUs.
- Ferrum Power Link DC Input: Proprietary 4-pin DC connector designed for optimal performance when paired with Ferrum's HYPSOS power supply.
Outputs:
- 4-pin XLR Headphones Output: Balanced output for headphones.
- 6.3 mm Jack, TRS Headphones Output: Single-ended output for headphones.
- XLR Output: Balanced output for connecting to external amplifiers or active speakers.
- RCA Output: Unbalanced output for connecting to external amplifiers or active speakers.
Controls:
- Rotary Input Selector and On/Off Switch: Selects between RCA and XLR inputs and powers the unit on/off.
- Rotary Gain Selector: Allows matching the gain level to different headphones.
- For single-ended headphones (6.3 mm jack): -10 dB, 0 dB, +10 dB.
- For balanced headphones (4-pin XLR): -4 dB, +6 dB, +16 dB.
- Volume Knob: Controls the output volume for both headphones and rear outputs.
- Bypass Rotary Switch: Disables the internal volume potentiometer, allowing volume control from the source. This function should be used with caution as it can lead to sudden high volumes.
- Ferrum Logo Brightness Potentiometer: Adjusts the brightness of the front panel Ferrum logo.
Usage Features:
- Getting Started: Before powering on, ensure all signal cables are connected. Set the Gain knob to the first position (-dB) and the Volume knob to approximately 25%. Turn on the OOR using the input selector. Gradually increase the volume. If the volume is too low at 75% of the Volume knob, reset the Volume to 25% and adjust the Gain knob to the next position (0 dB or +dB). The goal is to find a Gain setting that allows the optimum volume level to be around 50% of the Volume knob's range, providing the widest possible dynamic control.
- Bypass Function: This feature, disabled by default, allows the OOR's internal volume control to be bypassed. When activated (by switching the rotary switch from position 0 to 1, preferably with a flat screwdriver), the input signal is transmitted directly to the outputs at full power. This is useful when the user prefers to control volume from the audio source. WARNING: Activating bypass can cause a sudden, high volume output, potentially damaging hearing or connected equipment. It is strongly recommended to reduce the input signal at the source to a minimum before enabling bypass. Ferrum disclaims liability for any damage resulting from the use of this function.
- Using with Amplifiers or Active Speakers: The OOR's volume potentiometer affects all outputs (headphones, RCA, and XLR). When using the RCA or XLR outputs with an external amplifier or active speakers, it is advisable to disconnect headphones if they are not in use. This prevents unnecessary wear on headphones and allows for independent volume control of the connected speakers/amplifier.
- Made for HYPSOS: While the OOR performs well independently, it is designed to excel when paired with Ferrum's HYPSOS power supply. Utilizing the proprietary Ferrum Power Link connection, HYPSOS can unleash the OOR's full musicality, enhancing its performance beyond the sum of its parts.
