Overview

The Fish Tuning Digital DSP5 Switch is a sophisticated device designed to enhance the tuning capabilities of compatible vehicles, primarily diesel trucks. It allows users to instantly switch between different engine tunes, offering a range of functionalities from performance adjustments to security features. The switch is intuitive, with most operations controlled by simple button presses, and provides visual feedback through its display.

Function Description

The primary function of the DSP5 Switch is to enable instant switching between up to five different engine tunes. This allows drivers to adapt their vehicle's performance characteristics on the fly, whether for towing, fuel economy, or maximum power. The switch supports both 1-5 and 5-1 tuning configurations, meaning users can set their smallest tune to position 1 and their largest tune to position 5, or vice versa, depending on their preference.

Beyond tune switching, the device incorporates several advanced features. A "Lock Mode" allows users to lock the switch into a specific tune, preventing unauthorized changes. This is particularly useful for security or when loaning the vehicle. When locked, the display shows an "L" or "U" (for valet mode). To exit this mode, a password must be entered.

The "Valet Mode" is a specialized lock mode designed to restrict vehicle performance, making it suitable for situations where the vehicle is being driven by someone else, such as a valet or a new driver. In wired valet mode, available on LB7 and LLY ECMs, the switch selects a pre-defined valet tune. For LBZ and LMM ECMs, selecting valet mode also selects the valet tune, though wired valet mode is not supported. Engaging valet mode requires a password to disable and is persistent through key cycles.

A "High Idle Mode" is supported on LB7, LLY, and LBZ trucks, allowing the engine to maintain a higher idle speed. This can be useful for warming up the engine, charging the battery, or running accessories that require more power. High idle is persistent, meaning it remains active even after turning off and restarting the truck.

The switch also includes a "Tune Reverse Feature," which can be useful if a tuner configures tune 1 as the biggest tune. This feature allows the switch to select tune 5 when 1 is pressed and tune 1 when 5 is pressed, effectively reversing the button order for tunes.

For users who find the array of features overwhelming, "Simpler Modes" can be set. These modes allow disabling certain functionalities, such as valet and high idle, or even all features except tune switching, simplifying the user experience.

Usage Features

The DSP5 Switch is designed for ease of use, with most operations performed through button presses.

  • Changing Tunes: A single press of any button instantly switches tunes, with the display indicating the current tune.
  • Tune Locked Mode: Pressing and holding any single button until "P" appears locks the switch into that tune. This mode persists through key cycles and overrides the default start-up tune. It restricts access to valet and high idle modes.
  • Adjusting Brightness: Buttons 1 and 2 pressed together increase brightness, while buttons 4 and 5 decrease it. The setting is saved 30 seconds after the last adjustment.
  • Setting Default Start-Up Tune: Holding any single button during power-up sets the default start-up tune. This ensures the vehicle always starts in the desired tune.
  • Setting Valet Tune: To change the valet tune, users must first turn off locked mode, then press and hold buttons 1 and 3 while turning on the key. After entering the password, they can select the desired valet tune.
  • Always Start in Valet Flag: This feature makes the switch always start in valet mode when the key is turned on. It can be toggled on or off by pressing and holding buttons 3 and 5 at power-up and entering the password.
  • Setting Start Locked Flag: This feature ensures the switch always starts in the chosen start-up tune but displays "L" and requires a password to accept commands. It's enabled by pressing and holding buttons 1 and 2 at power-up and entering the password.
  • Disabling Start Locked Mode: If start locked mode is enabled, pressing and holding buttons 3 and 5 until "L" appears, then entering the password, will disable it.
  • Engaging High Idle: Pressing and holding buttons 2 and 4 until "H" appears engages high idle. Exiting high idle is done by pressing any button to select a tune.
  • Changing the Password: Pressing buttons 1 and 4 together for five seconds allows users to enter a new password. The process involves entering the current lock code, then the new lock code twice.
  • Adjusting Password Length: The password length can be adjusted from four to eight digits. This is done by first turning off start locked mode, then pressing and holding buttons 4 and 5 while turning on the key until "K" appears. After entering the password, users can select the desired length.

Maintenance Features

The manual primarily focuses on operational and configuration aspects rather than traditional maintenance. However, there are considerations related to its setup and restoration:

  • Installation: The device requires careful installation, involving connecting four or five wires to specific pins on the vehicle's ECM. Key connections include a black wire to ground, a red wire to switched 12V, a yellow wire to the valet pin (if applicable), an orange wire to the high idle pin(s) (if applicable), and the last wire to the DSP5 input pin on the ECM. It is strongly recommended to disconnect the battery before unplugging connectors from the ECM to prevent damage.
  • Wire Insulation: Users are advised to insulate and tie up any unused wires, especially the orange high idle wire, as it supplies 12V when active and could cause damage if it touches ground.
  • Factory Defaults Restoration: If a user forgets their password or wishes to reset all settings, instructions for restoring the switch to factory defaults are available on the FishTuning website. This is a critical feature for troubleshooting or reconfiguring the device from a clean state.
  • Password Management: The device's robust password system, including adjustable length and clear feedback during entry, is a form of "maintenance" for security. Users are guided through changing passwords and understanding password-related displays ("A, B, C" for incorrect entry, "P" for accepted request, "L" or "U" for locked/valet mode).

In summary, the Fish Tuning Digital DSP5 Switch is a versatile and user-friendly device that empowers vehicle owners with advanced control over their engine tunes and offers valuable security and convenience features. Its design prioritizes ease of operation while providing comprehensive customization options.
