In such systems, as water heats up, it expands, and without a mechanism to accommodate this expansion, it can lead to unsafe operating pressures and the nuisance activation of the boiler relief valve. These tanks prevent such issues by providing a dedicated space for the expanding water.
A key feature of the Flexcon tanks is the permanent separation of air and water, achieved by a 100% butyl rubber diaphragm. This design ensures that the air cushion, which is essential for absorbing the expanding water, remains intact and does not mix with the system water, preventing airlogging and maintaining optimal performance over time. It's crucial to note that these tanks are specifically designed for closed hydronic systems and are not to be used in open or potable (domestic) water systems. Using them in an incorrect application can be dangerous and will void the product warranty.
Installation of the Flexcon expansion tank must be performed by a qualified professional, adhering to all local and national plumbing and electrical codes. Prior to installation, it is essential to read and fully understand the instructions provided in the manual and those available on the Flexcon website, which are regularly updated. The tank should be installed on the supply side of the boiler, on the suction side of the circulator, to effectively manage the system's pressure. Adequate thread sealant (pipe dope) must be applied to connections to ensure a leak-free installation. The system piping should be connected to the tank's discharge opening using a tee, air scoop, or other suitable tapping in the system. After installation, the system must be pressurized, and all connections checked for leaks before restarting the boiler.
A critical step before initial tank installation is adjusting the pre-charge pressure. The tank is shipped from the factory with a pre-charge of 12 PSI. Any adjustments to this pre-charge must be made when the system has 0 PSI pressure and the tank is at ambient temperature. The pre-charge should be set to match the boiler fill valve setting. It is explicitly warned not to adjust the pre-charge if the product is corroded, damaged, or shows any signs of diminished integrity, or if the system is under pressure. Failure to properly adjust the pre-charge can shorten the product's life expectancy and is considered unsafe, potentially leading to serious injury, death, and/or property damage.
The tank's design allows it to be supported by system piping, but it is important to ensure adequate support for the piping system itself, potentially requiring strapping, brackets, or pipe hangers. The tank must always be installed in a vertical position; horizontal installation is not permitted.
Regarding maintenance, the Flexcon expansion tank and the entire system must be checked annually by a qualified professional. This annual inspection should include a visual examination of the tank and its connection to the system piping for any signs of water leakage or corrosion on the exterior. If any visible signs of leaking, corrosion, or rusting are present, the tank must be replaced immediately to prevent personal injury or property damage. It is also warned not to adjust the tank air pressure if there are any signs of corrosion on the tank.
The performance and lifespan of the product can be significantly and adversely impacted by aggressive water conditions. Therefore, a water test should be conducted at regular, periodic intervals to check for corrosive water, acids, and other relevant contaminants. If present, these contaminants must be treated immediately and appropriately. The system piping must be properly grounded to earth, and a di-electric union is recommended in the installation to prevent galvanic corrosion.
The product warranty covers defects in material or workmanship for five years from the date of manufacture. However, the warranty is void if the product is not correctly installed, operated, repaired, or maintained as described in the manual, or if failure results from misuse, abuse, improper or negligent handling, shipping (by anyone other than Flexcon), storage, use, or operation, or damages caused by lightning, floods, fire, freezing, or other environmental conditions. Unauthorized alterations or attempts to repair tank leaks or parts, or using the product for purposes other than those specified in the manual, also void the warranty. The warranty does not cover labor costs, shipping charges, service charges, delivery expenses, administrative fees, or any costs incurred in removing or reinstalling the products. Claims must be submitted within 30 days after the expiration of the warranty period, and repairs or replacements must be authorized in advance by Flexcon.
In case of a warranty claim, the purchaser must notify the authorized Flexcon distributor or dealer who sold the product within 30 days of the event. If a prompt response is not received, Flexcon can be contacted directly. The warranty claim notice should be submitted within 60 days of the event. Flexcon may require the claimant to ship the product, postage prepaid, to an authorized distributor or to Flexcon, along with proof of purchase, as a precondition for determining replacement. For replacement products or components, Flexcon reserves the right to make changes in design, construction, or material, and the replacement will be subject to the original warranty terms, with the warranty period reduced by the time the claimant owned the product prior to the claim.
The manual also includes a California Proposition 65 warning, indicating that the product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.
