The FLIR SCION is a thermal imaging monocular designed for enhanced situational awareness and detailed observation in various conditions. It features a robust design with intuitive controls and multiple viewing modes to suit different operational needs.

Function Description

The FLIR SCION operates by detecting infrared radiation, converting it into a visible image, allowing users to see heat signatures in complete darkness, through smoke, light fog, and other obscurants. This capability makes it ideal for applications such as hunting, security, search and rescue, and outdoor exploration. The device is equipped with a diopter adjustment for clear viewing, ensuring that the display is sharp for individual users. It also includes a 1/4-20 tripod mount, enabling stable, hands-free operation when needed.

Usage Features

The FLIR SCION offers a user-friendly interface with a control panel featuring distinct buttons for various functions:

• Power Button: A short press cancels or exits a menu, while a long press powers the device ON or OFF.
• Up Arrow: A short press zooms IN in steps, and a long press provides progressive zoom IN.
• Menu Button: A short press changes the viewing mode, and a long press launches the internal menu.
• Down Arrow: A short press zooms OUT in steps, and a long press provides progressive zoom OUT.
• Flex Button: A short press captures an image, and a long press starts or stops video recording.

The device supports multiple viewing modes, which can be cycled through with a short press of the MENU button:

• FULL Mode: Provides a minimal overlay for the best situational awareness, offering a wide field of view.
• Picture-in-Picture (PiP) Mode: Displays a 2x zoomed-in view of the center area within a smaller window (sample area size: 160 × 120 pixels; display area size: 320 × 240 pixels), allowing for detailed inspection while maintaining peripheral awareness.
• Lock Span Mode: Locks the Auto Gain Control (AGC) at the current level, enabling users to view rich details even in low dynamic range scenes. A short press of the POWER button locks and unlocks AGC.

The internal menu, accessed by a long press of the MENU button, provides extensive customization options:

• Palettes: Allows selection of different color palettes for thermal imaging.
• Levels: Adjusts image levels.
• Modes: Provides additional mode selections.
• Gallery: Accesses captured images and videos.
• Settings: General device settings.

Maintenance Features

The FLIR SCION is designed for easy maintenance and accessibility:

• Battery Installation: The device uses 2, 4, or 6 CR123 batteries. To install, users turn the battery door latch 90 degrees, remove the battery tray, insert batteries following proper polarity, install the tray back into the compartment, and securely close the compartment with the screw latch.
• USB Access: For data transfer and charging, the USB port is accessed by twisting the USB cover. Users can then connect a USB connector to the port to connect the device to a PC or MAC.
• User Manual Access: Product documentation and the user manual are stored on the internal memory. To access them, users power on the unit, connect it to a PC or MAC via USB, browse to the internal storage location, and open the desired user guide. This ensures that essential information is always available without needing external resources.
