Macintosh PowerBooks and Duos
Not all PowerBooks have a connector for an external monitor. On
these PowerBook models, there is no place to plug in L•TV Portable
Pro. On the PowerBook 140 and 170, for example, you must buy a
third party add-on to output external video. Some Duos don’t have an
external connector unless connected to a dock.
L•TV Portable Pro won't work with a PowerBook if:
1) The PowerBook is powered from the battery. You must
use A/C power.
2) The connection labeled "To Computer Monitor" is dis-
connected. If you have no external computer monitor for
your PowerBook, use the optional L•TV Portable Pro
terminator. The PowerBook will then "see" a monitor
attached during boot up and correctly output video
through its external video connector.
The PowerBooks allow you to have your external monitor (or L•TV
Portable Pro and TV) either be the same as (mirror) the LCD panel or
different than the LCD panel (acting as a second monitor). When you
first plug-in L•TVPortable Pro to a PowerBook and boot, it does not
mirror. Instead, it gives a larger desktop, or more “real estate” on
which to work, drag windows, or use programs. You can actually drag
windows from one screen to another in this mode. L•TVPortable Pro
will work in either mode. But usually, it is more desirable to have
L•TVPortable Pro mirror the LCD panel. To activate mirroring, select
the PowerBook Display option from your Control Panels. Then select
the option for mirroring. After you change this option, you must
reboot. The sequence is:
1) Set the L•TVPortable Pro switches to emulate an
external monitor.
2) Plug in the PowerBook.
3) Turn on L•TV Portable Pro.
4) Boot the PowerBook.
5) Change the PowerBook Display option to mirror.
6) Reboot the PowerBook.
Incidentally, there is an easy way to tell if the PowerBook has recognized
two monitors. Select Monitors under Control Panels. If two monitors are
recognized, you will see two boxes that represent monitors.
Let’s forget about L•TV Portable Pro for a moment. When a 13 inch
monitor alone is connected to a PowerBook in mirror mode, a large
black border at the top and bottom of the monitor appear. The
Macintosh PowerBook does not output a full 640 by 480 screen
because the LCD panel is not a full 640 by 480. Therefore the remain-
ing space on the top and bottom of the monitor is painted black by the
PowerBook. When you install L•TVPortable Pro into the display sys-
tem, this black border does not disappear. After all, L•TVPortable Pro
is emulating a 13 inch monitor. This is a limitation of the PowerBook
display and shouldn’t be a problem for typical PowerBook users.
