REFACING
VALVES.
Remove
all
carbon
from
the
valve
head
and
stem
. Grind the face
of
the valve
at
45
0
ang
le as
shown
in
fig.
10.
If
the
valve
head
is
less
than
'13
2
inch
thick
at
the
o
uter
edge
replace
the
valve.

REFACING
VALVE
SEATS.
Clean
sea
ts
thoroughly
with
a wire brush
to
prevent
carbon from
becoming
embedded
in
the
grinding
wheel
during the
refacing operation.
Keep
grinding dust from entering
the
engine
. R
emove
only
enough
stock
to
clean up pits
and other depressions.
NOTE:
Worn
va
l
ve
guides
nlust
be
replac
ed
be/ore

ng
val

ve
seats.
After regrinding the
valve
seats, the width of the
seat
must not
exceed
V
16
inch measured across the fa
ce
of
the
seat
as
shown
in
fig.
11.
Tf
the val
ve
seat
is too wide,
remove
just enough s
to
ck
from
the
top
or
bottom
of
the
va
l
ve
seat
to re
duce
the
widt
h
to
approximately
%6
inch
.
This
c
an
be
don
e
by
using a
30
degree
angle
grinder
to
remove
s
tock
from
the
bottom
of
the
valve
seat
, a
nd
a 60
degree
angle
grinder
to
remove
stock
from
the
top
of
the
valve
seat.
The
valve
seat
should
not
exceed
0.005
inch
run
out
.
Check
the
valve
seat
run
out
with
a
dia
l
indicator
(fig.
12).
Lap
the
seat
and
valve
together
wit
h a fine
lap
-
ping
compound
to
finish
the
operation
.

Some
R
series
engines
are
equipp
ed
with
v
alve
seat
inserts for
both
intake and
exhaust
valves
, others
use
inserts in
the
exhaust
valve ports
only,
and
s
ome
have
no
inserts
at
all.
The
H,
M,
and
E series
engines
have
inserts in
the
exhaust
valve
port
only.
Valve
seat
inserts are pres
sed
into
the
counter
bore
in
the
cylinder
block
valve
port
(fig.
13).

REMOVAL.
Remove
th
e
insert
by
driving
a
wed
ge
under
the
insert and prying
it
out.
(2)
INSTALLATIUN
. Chill
the
ins
erts
with
dry
ice
before inserting
them
in
the
cylinder
block.
Tap
them
with a s
oft
fa
ced
ha
mm
er
until
they
sea
t firmly in
the
recess. After installing
th
e v
al
ve s
eat
inserts, grind
them
co
n
ce
ntric
to
the
valve
guides.
