Overview

This document is a Use & Care Manual for a Frigidaire dishwasher, providing comprehensive information on its operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Function Description

The Frigidaire dishwasher is designed to clean dishware by spraying a mixture of hot water and detergent through spray arms against soiled surfaces. Water fills the filter area, is pumped through the spray arms, and soil particles are filtered and drained out. This process repeats as needed, with the number of water fills varying by the selected cycle. The dishwasher features a Precision Direct Wash System, which includes enhancements to reduce sound levels during operation.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Power Supply: Operates on regular house current (120V, 60Hz).
  • Circuit Requirement: Requires a 15-ampere fuse or circuit breaker; a 20-ampere fuse is needed if connected with a food disposer.
  • Water Pressure: Hot water line must provide pressure between 20 and 120 psi.
  • Water Temperature: Optimal performance requires incoming hot water at or near 120°F (49°C).
  • Sanitize Option: Raises final rinse water temperature to 155°F (68°C) and maintains it for 9 minutes, meeting NSF requirements.
  • Detergent Type: Requires household-grade automatic dishwashing detergent; industrial-grade detergent can damage the heating coil and other parts.
  • Rinse Aid Capacity: Dispenser holds enough rinse aid for 35 to 140 washes, depending on the setting.

Usage Features

Wash Cycle Selections:

  • Heavy Wash: Recommended for pots, pans, casseroles, and dinnerware with light to heavily soiled loads. Duration: 2 - 2 1/4 hours. Water usage: 7-9 gallons (25-34 L).
  • Normal Wash: Recommended for lightly to heavily soiled loads. Duration: 2 - 1 3/4 hours. Water usage: 4-7 gallons (13-26 L).
  • Top Rack: For small loads in the upper rack only, light to heavily soiled. Duration: 1 1/4 hours. Water usage: 4 gallons (14 L).
  • Rinse Only: For rinsing dishware to be washed later. Duration: 1/4 hour. Water usage: 2 gallons (9 L).

Option Selections:

  • Hi-Temp Wash Option: Heats water in the main wash to approximately 140°F (60°C) to improve cleaning and drying. Available with all cycles except RINSE ONLY. Automatically provided with HEAVY WASH.
  • Sanitize Option: Raises final rinse temperature to 155°F (68°C) for sanitization. Available in Heavy and Normal Cycles.
  • Delay Start: Allows delaying the start of the dishwasher for 2, 4, or 6 hours.
  • Air Dry: Deactivates the heater during the drying phase, reducing energy use but potentially leading to less complete drying.
  • Child Lock Controls: Prevents accidental changes to cycles or starting the dishwasher. Activated by pressing and releasing the AIR DRY pad for 3 seconds while the door is open.

Loading Features:

  • Top Rack: Designed for cups, glasses, stemware, small plates, and bowls. Plastic items should be loaded here. Some models include fold-down cup shelves/stemware holders for loading two levels of items.
  • Bottom Rack: Best for plates, saucers, bowls, and cookware. Large items should be placed along the edge to avoid blocking spray arm rotation. Bowls, casseroles, and saucepans should face down or toward the center.
  • Silverware Basket: Load sharp items (knives, skewers) pointing down to prevent injury. Mix items (some pointing up, some down) to avoid nesting and ensure thorough cleaning. Do not mix silver and stainless steel.

Detergent Dispenser:

  • Features two cups: a smaller one for pre-wash and a larger one for the main wash.
  • Detergent amount depends on water hardness (measured in grains per gallon). A chart provides guidance for soft, medium, hard, and very hard water. For very hard water, a water softener is recommended.
  • For automatic dishwashing tablets or packets, place one in the main wash cup.

Rinse Aid Dispenser:

  • Automatically releases rinse aid during the last rinse to improve drying and reduce water spots.
  • Adjustable dial to increase or decrease the amount dispensed. Indicator shows when refilling is needed.

DishSense™ Technology:

  • Checks soil levels in HEAVY WASH, NORMAL WASH, and TOP RACK cycles.
  • Adjusts water fills, cycle time, and water usage based on soil amount and incoming water temperature.

Maintenance Features

Care and Cleaning:

  • Outer Door: Clean with warm soapy water and a dishcloth or sponge. Avoid harsh cleaners.
  • Inside: Self-cleaning with normal use. Clean around the tub gasket area with a damp cloth if needed.
  • Glass Trap: Located in the center of the filter, it collects broken glass, straws, bones, and pits. To empty, rotate the handle 90° clockwise, press down on the wash arm, and lift the assembly. The glass trap can be separated from the spray arm for easier emptying.
  • Overfill Protector: Located in the left front corner of the tub, it prevents overfilling. Clean occasionally with household cleaner (vinegar or bleach) and ensure it moves freely.
  • Removing Spots and Film: For lime deposit buildup or spots/film from hard water, run a NORMAL WASH cycle with clean dishes (no metal utensils), adding 2 cups of white vinegar to the bottom of the dishwasher after the second water fill.

Drain Air Gap:

  • If installed, check to ensure it is clean for proper drainage. This is not part of the dishwasher and not covered by warranty.

Winterizing:

  • For dishwashers in unheated areas, a qualified person should disconnect electrical power, shut off water supply, disconnect water line from inlet valve and drain, and disconnect drain line from pump and drain.
  • To restore service, flush the water line, reconnect water, drain, and electrical power, then run a HEAVY WASH cycle with detergent in both cups, and check for leaks.

Troubleshooting (Before you Call):

  • Food Soils Left on Dishes: Check cycle selection, rack loading, water pressure, water temperature, water hardness, detergent freshness, and ensure spray arms are not blocked.
  • Dishes not Dry: Check rinse aid dispenser fill level and setting, incoming water temperature, and loading to avoid nesting.
  • Glassware/Flatware Spotted or Cloudy: Check water hardness, water temperature, loading, detergent freshness, rinse aid fill, and water pressure.
  • Dishware Chipped: Load with care, place delicate items in the top rack, ensure items are secure, and check clearance for tall glasses.
  • Vapor at Vent: Wipe up spilled rinse aid to prevent foam and overflowing.
  • Dishware Stained or Discolored: For tea/coffee stains, use bleach solution. For iron deposits, consider a water supply filter. Load aluminum utensils properly to avoid marks. Rinse high-acid foods if not washing immediately. Avoid mixing stainless steel and silver.
  • Etching: Adjust detergent amount based on water hardness; lower water temperature if needed.
  • Detergent Left in Cups: Use fresh detergent, ensure spray is not blocked, and check if the cycle completed.
  • Dishwasher Leaks: Check door gasket, wipe up spilled rinse aid, and ensure the dishwasher is level.
  • Cycle Takes a Long Time: May be due to reaching key temperatures, cool water supply, large loads, Delay Start option, or soil-sensing adjustments.
  • Dishwasher Won't Run: Check circuit breaker/fuse, water supply, cycle setting, Delay Start option, door latch, and START/CANCEL pad.
  • Dishwasher Won't Fill: Check water supply and overfill protector.
  • Dishwasher Does Not Drain Properly: Check food disposer (if connected), knockout plug, drain hose, cycle completion, and glass trap maintenance.
  • Dishwasher has an Odor: Use Rinse Only cycle for soiled dishes, note "new" smell after installation, and check drainage.
  • Stains on Tub Interior: Tomato-based soils can cause pink/orange stains; pre-rinsing or Rinse Only cycle can reduce this. No heat dry option lessens staining.
  • Opening the door during cycle: If the door is opened, the START/CANCEL pad must be pressed and the door shut immediately (within 10 minutes) for the cycle to resume.
