Overview

The FRONTLINE RGSS58 is a fall protection device designed for use in personal fall arrest and restraint systems. It is intended to help prevent serious injury or death in the event of a fall by arresting the fall and limiting the forces applied to the user. The device is part of a comprehensive fall safety program and must be used in conjunction with other compatible fall protection equipment, including harnesses, anchorage connectors, and vertical lifeline assemblies (VLAs).

Function Description

The RGSS58 primarily functions as a fall arrester on a vertical lifeline. When properly installed on a rope, it allows the user to move along the lifeline while providing continuous fall protection. In the event of a fall, the device is designed to automatically engage and arrest the fall, minimizing the impact forces on the user. The RGSS58 incorporates an anti-panic feature, which activates if the user grips the fall arrester too tightly during a fall, ensuring proper function even under stress. It is crucial to understand that the device is designed to arrest a fall, not to prevent it entirely, and therefore, proper fall clearance must always be maintained below the user.

Usage Features

The RGSS58 is designed for ease of installation and use, though it requires careful adherence to the provided instructions. To install, the rope is threaded into the fall arrester by loosening a nut, opening a flange, pressing a safety clip, and then re-tightening the nut and closing the flange. Once installed on the rope, the device is connected to the user's harness D-ring via a snap hook with an integrated shock pack. This snap hook, in turn, connects to a compatible anchorage connector.

When moving along the lifeline, the user must compress and hold the fall arrester handle to allow it to slide freely. It is critical to always adjust the fall arrester to reduce slack in the system as much as possible. The manual explicitly states that when moving along a work surface, the user should move the fall arrester along the rope, not move the rope itself while keeping the fall arrester stationary. This prevents excessive free fall, which could lead to serious injury. To restrict movement, the user simply releases the fall arrester handle.

The device is suitable for both personal fall arrest and restraint applications. In fall arrest applications, it supports a maximum of one Personal Fall Arrest System (PFAS), requiring the structure to withstand loads applied in the permitted directions. For restraint applications, the RGSS58 helps prevent workers from reaching a fall hazard's leading edge, with no free fall permitted. The device is designed for a worker weight capacity range (including all clothing, tools, and equipment) of 130-310 lbs.

Users must never work above the fall arrester unless free fall is limited to 6 feet or less. It is also important to note that only one connection is permitted per Vertical Lifeline Assembly (VLA), and users should never attempt to remove components from the VLA or alter/misuse the equipment. The device's compatibility with other components is paramount, and all connections must eliminate the possibility of roll-out, where interference could unintentionally open a hook gate. All connector gates must be self-closing and self-locking and withstand a minimum load of 3600 lbs.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is essential for the safety and longevity of the RGSS58. The device requires regular inspection and cleaning. Before each use, the user must inspect the RGSS58 for any deficiencies, including corrosion, deformation, cracks, sharp edges, excessive heating, alteration, broken stitching, fraying, and missing or illegible labels. Any equipment found with deficiencies or exposed to fall arrest forces must be immediately removed from service.

In addition to pre-use inspections, a Competent Person, other than the user, must inspect the RGSS58 at least every six months. These periodic inspections must be documented in an inspection log, including the date, reason for entry, defects noted, repairs carried out, and the name and signature of the competent person. The product has a lifetime of 10 years from the date of first use or manufacture, provided it passes all pre-use and Competent Person inspections.

Cleaning the RGSS58 after each use is crucial. All dirt, corrosives, and contaminants should be removed. If plain water is insufficient, mild soap and water can be used, followed by rinsing and wiping dry. Corrosive substances should never be used for cleaning.

Repairs to the RGSS58 can only be performed by an entity authorized by the manufacturer. If the device fails inspection, it must be immediately removed from service, and the manufacturer should be contacted regarding its return or repair. When not in use, the equipment should be stored in an environment where it will not be affected by heat, light, excessive moisture, chemicals, or other degrading elements.
