Overview

This document is a user instruction manual for FRONTLINE Self-Retracting Lifelines (SRLs), which are components of personal fall arrest, work positioning, or rescue systems.

Function Description:

FRONTLINE SRLs are designed as connecting elements within a fall protection system to safeguard users against falls from heights in various working environments. They are intended for use by one person and are crucial for applications where falls may occur, providing both work mobility and fall protection. The SRLs automatically retract and extend the lifeline, maintaining tension to minimize free fall distance in the event of a fall. When a fall occurs, the SRL's braking mechanism engages, locking the lifeline and arresting the fall.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Capacity:
    • ANSI rated weight capacity range: 130 lbs. to 310 lbs. (59-140 kg).
    • Maximum OSHA capacity: 420 lbs. (190 kg).
    • For users exceeding 310 lbs. (141 kg) up to 420 lbs. (191 kg), the anchorage point must not be more than 2 ft. (0.6 m) below the Dorsal D-Ring and higher when connecting off to the user's left or right side.
  • Deceleration Distance (ANSI Z359.14-2014):
    • Maximum Deceleration Distance: ≤ 24 inches (610 mm).
  • Arresting Force (ANSI Z359.14-2014):
    • Average Arresting Force: ≤ 1,350 lbs. (6 kN).
    • Maximum Arresting Force: ≤ 1,800 lbs. (8 kN).
  • Free Fall Distance:
    • When anchored overhead, SRLs limit free fall distance to 2 ft. (61 cm) or less.
  • Connectors:
    • Self-closing, self-locking connectors are required by ANSI and OSHA.
    • Connectors must be compatible in size, shape, and strength.
    • Minimum load capacity for non-certified anchorages: 5,000 lbs. (22.2 kN).
    • Minimum load capacity for connector gates: 3,600 lbs.
  • Materials:
    • Cable SRLs: Aluminum, Galvanized steel cable wire, Thermoplastic Housing, Stainless steel & non-corrosive components.
    • Webbing SRLs: UHMWPE & Polyester Webbing, Aluminum Housing, Stainless steel & non-corrosive components.
  • Lifeline Lengths (Examples):
    • RPA061S, RPA062S, RPA062R, RPA062RA: 6 ft. (1.8 m) 3/4" UHMWPE & Polyester Webbing.
    • RPA091TB, RPA092TB: 9 ft. (2.7 m) 3/4" UHMWPE & Polyester Webbing.
    • RPA121R: 12 ft. (3.6 m) 1" UHMWPE & Polyester Webbing.
    • RPGC30: 30 ft. (9.1 m) 3/16" Galvanized steel cable.
    • RPGC50: 50 ft. (15.2 m) 3/16" Galvanized steel cable.
  • Standards Compliance: ANSI Z359.14-2014, A10.32-2012, OSHA 1926.502, 1910.66, EN360:2002.

Usage Features:

  • Anchorage: SRLs are designed to be installed in an anchor cradle or attached overhead. The anchorage point should be directly above the work level to minimize swing falls. For users exceeding 310 lbs., specific anchorage height limitations apply relative to the dorsal D-ring.
  • Connection: Connect the SRL to the user's harness shoulder straps (dorsal D-ring). Dual SRLs are connected via a dual connector to the web loop of the back harness, not the D-ring. Snap hooks and carabiners must be self-locking and fully closed and locked to prevent unintended disengagement.
  • Mobility: Allows the worker to move freely within the recommended working area while maintaining lifeline tension.
  • Fall Arrest: In the event of a fall, the SRL locks, arresting the fall and limiting free fall distance and arresting force within specified limits.
  • Prohibited Uses:
    • Altering or misusing the equipment.
    • Using a body belt for fall arrest.
    • Allowing the lifeline to cross or tangle with another worker's lifeline.
    • Clamping, knotting, or preventing the lifeline from retracting or being taut.
    • Lengthening the SRL with additional components.
    • Allowing the lifeline to freewheel back into the housing.
    • Using webbing SRLs with sharp object applications.
    • Looping the lifeline around structural members (unless specifically designed for tie-back).
    • Attaching a tie-back snap hook between the shock pack and the SRL housing.
    • Working where swing falls could cause injury.
    • Using if any component is damaged or incompatible.
    • Using by pregnant women or minors.
  • Tag Line: A tag line can be used to maintain tension and rewind the lifeline during inactivity, and to retrieve the leg end connector. It should not be connected during fall protection use.

Maintenance Features:

  • Inspection Frequency:
    • Before Each Use: Inspected by the authorized person or rescuer.
    • Regularly (Competent Person): Inspected by a competent person other than the user, following an inspection schedule and checklist. Results must be recorded in the "Inspection and Maintenance Log."
      • Infrequent to Light Use: Annually (at least every 5 years for revalidation).
      • Moderate to Heavy Use: Semi-annually to annually (at least every 2 years for revalidation).
      • Severe to Continuous Use: Quarterly to semi-annually (at least annually for revalidation).
  • Inspection Criteria:
    • SRL: Check for loose/missing fasteners, damaged parts, housing distortion/cracks, harness interface distortion/cracks, free pivoting interface, smooth lifeline retraction/extension without slack, positive lock-up when jerked, no slipping, legible labels, and corrosion.
    • Lifeline: Inspect for cuts, kinks, broken wires, bird-caging, corrosion, welding splatter, chemical contact, abraded areas. Slide up cable guide bumper to inspect ferrules for cracks/damage. Ensure no knots.
    • Harness Interface: Inspect locking pin for secure closure and lock around harness shoulder straps.
    • Lanyard End Connectors: Inspect snap hook for damage, corrosion, proper working condition. Swivels (if present) should rotate freely, and gates should open, close, lock, and unlock properly.
  • After a Fall: Immediately tag the SRL as "UNUSABLE," remove it from service, and store separately. Any unit subjected to fall arrest forces or exhibiting damage must be removed from service.
  • Cleaning: Keep the SRL free of paint, grease, dirt, or other contaminants. Clean the exterior with a detergent/water solution. Do not allow water or corrosion-causing elements into the housing. After cleaning, fully extend the lifeline, air dry, then retract it under tension. Do not use heat to dry.
  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry, clean environment, out of direct sunlight. Position to allow water to drain. Avoid chemical or caustic vapors. Inspect thoroughly after extended storage.
  • Service: If the lifeline does not retract fully due to misalignment or bunching, hang the SRL from a sufficient height to allow the full working length to be pulled off, then retract completely, maintaining tension.
  • Product Life: Functional life is determined by work conditions and maintenance. It remains in service as long as it passes inspection criteria.
  • Disposal: Dispose of the SRL if it has been subjected to fall arrest forces or if inspection reveals an unsafe or defective condition. Disable the SRL (e.g., by cutting the cable lifeline in half) to prevent inadvertent reuse.
  • Self-Service/Repair: DO NOT attempt to disassemble, self-service, or repair the SRL.
