Overview

The Futaba T16IZ is a radio transmitter designed for remote control applications, primarily in the hobbyist and model aircraft sectors. Its core function is to transmit control signals to a receiver, which then operates various components of a model, such as motors, servos, and other accessories. The device is designed to be user-updatable, allowing for continuous improvement and expansion of its capabilities through software updates.

Function Description

The T16IZ serves as the central control unit for model operation. It features a range of input controls, including joysticks, switches, and buttons, which translate user commands into radio signals. These signals are then wirelessly transmitted to a compatible receiver installed in the model. The transmitter supports various programming options, enabling users to customize control responses, set up mixes, and configure advanced functions tailored to specific model types and flying styles.

A key aspect of the T16IZ's functionality is its telemetry capability. When paired with compatible ESCs (Electronic Speed Controllers) and sensors, the transmitter can receive real-time data from the model. This telemetry data can include crucial information such as battery voltage, current consumption, ESC temperature, motor RPM, and more. This feedback is displayed on the transmitter's LCD screen, providing the user with vital operational insights during flight. The device also supports alarm functions, which can be configured to alert the user (via buzzer, voice, or vibration) when certain telemetry parameters exceed or fall below predefined thresholds, enhancing safety and operational awareness.

The T16IZ is designed to be compatible with a range of Futaba and third-party accessories. For instance, it supports Futaba ESCs like the MC-980H/A, MC-9130H/A, and MC-9200H/A, as well as Hobbywing and SCORPION POWER SYSTEM ESCs, allowing for integrated telemetry functions. The device also supports the GYA553 Airplane Gyro, with added setting parameters for AIL/ELE/RUD holding power, enabling fine-tuning of aircraft stability and control in AVCS mode.

Usage Features

The T16IZ is designed for ease of use and customization. Its software update procedure is straightforward, allowing users to download update files from the Futaba website, copy them to a microSD card, and then install them on the transmitter. This process ensures that the device can always run the latest software, benefiting from new features, bug fixes, and improved performance. The update process involves turning on the transmitter while pressing the "HOME/EXIT" button, which initiates the software update from the microSD card.

The user interface includes an LCD display that shows various operational parameters, telemetry data, and menu options. Navigation through the menus is intuitive, with touch-sensitive controls and physical buttons. For telemetry, users can access dedicated display screens that show real-time data for current, voltage, capacity, rotation, and ESC temperature. Alarm settings can be configured for these parameters, allowing users to define thresholds and choose alarm types (buzzer, voice, or inhibit). The speech function can be turned ON or OFF for voice alarms.

The device supports the registration of ESCs with the transmitter, a process that typically involves connecting an SBM-2 module to the S.I/F port on the back of the transmitter and then tapping the "Register" option in the linkage menu. This integration enables the telemetry functions for compatible ESCs. The system also allows for changing slot assignments for sensors, providing flexibility in how telemetry data is organized and displayed.

For specific gyros like the GYA553, the T16IZ provides additional setting parameters for AIL/ELE/RUD holding power. This allows users to adjust the gyro's holding force in AVCS mode, influencing the aircraft's stability and control feel. Decreasing the value weakens the holding power, making the operation feel closer to the Normal mode.

Maintenance Features

The primary maintenance feature of the T16IZ is its software update capability. Regular updates ensure the transmitter operates optimally and benefits from the latest enhancements. Users are advised to check the Futaba website for new update files and follow the provided update procedure.

During the update process, several precautions are highlighted to ensure successful maintenance:

  • Battery Charge: It is crucial to ensure the battery is sufficiently charged (preferably above 50%) before starting an update. A fully discharged battery during an update can lead to failure and potential damage to the transmitter.
  • Model Data Backup: Before performing a software update, users are advised to back up their model data. While updates are designed to preserve existing model data, backing it up provides an extra layer of safety.
  • MicroSD Card Handling: The microSD card is essential for updates. Users must ensure the "FUTABA" folder containing the update files is correctly copied to the card. If another "FUTABA" folder already exists on the card, it will be overwritten during the copy process.
  • Error Handling: The transmitter provides specific error messages if an update fails. These messages include "Low battery," "Update file not found," "Broken file," and "Write error." Each message indicates a specific issue and provides guidance for troubleshooting. For example, "Low battery" suggests recharging the battery, while "Update file not found" indicates an issue with the files on the microSD card. In cases of "Broken file," the update file might be corrupted or intended for a different transmitter. A "Write error" suggests an unknown issue, and users are advised to contact a local service center.
  • Recovery Procedure: In the event of a failed update where the transmitter does not start, a recovery procedure is provided. This involves detaching and reattaching the battery while pressing the "HOME/EXIT" button, with the microSD card containing the update files inserted. This attempts to restart the update process. If the transmitter still fails to update or start after these steps, professional servicing is recommended.
  • Safety Precaution: A critical warning emphasizes not to remove the battery or the microSD card from the transmitter during an update, as this could damage the device.

Overall, the Futaba T16IZ is designed to be a robust and adaptable radio transmitter, with user-friendly update and maintenance procedures that extend its lifespan and ensure it remains current with evolving technology and user needs.
