Do you have a question about the GE AGM18 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document describes the GE Room Air Conditioner, a device designed to cool indoor spaces. It comes in various models, including AGM14, AGL18, AGM18, AGQ18, AGV18, AGL24, AGQ24, AGV24, and AGW24, indicating different capacities or feature sets.

Function Description

The primary function of the GE Room Air Conditioner is to cool and dehumidify a room. It operates by drawing in room air, passing it over cooling coils, and then circulating the cooled air back into the room. The unit also offers fan-only modes for air circulation without cooling and can be set to different fan speeds (Low, Medium, High) and cooling levels (Cool, Energy Saver).

Important Technical Specifications

The air conditioner models are designed for specific electrical requirements. Some models operate on 115-volt AC, 60 Hz, with a 15-amp time delay fuse or circuit breaker. These models typically use a 3-prong grounding plug. Other models require 230/208-volt AC, 60 Hz, with a 20-amp time delay fuse or circuit breaker. These models are equipped with a 3-prong grounding plug and may require a dedicated circuit. The manual strongly recommends checking the electrical requirements for the specific model to ensure proper installation and prevent fire hazards.

Usage Features

The air conditioner can be controlled via an ON/OFF pad on the unit or a remote control. Key operating modes include:

  • ON/OFF Pad: Turns the air conditioner on or off.
  • Display: Shows the set temperature or remaining time on the timer.
  • Mode: Allows selection between COOL (cooling), FAN (fan-only), and ENERGY SAVER modes.
    • COOL Mode: Provides cooling with adjustable fan speeds (Low, Medium, High) and temperature settings.
    • FAN Mode: Circulates air without cooling, offering Low, Medium, and High fan speeds.
    • ENERGY SAVER Mode: Cycles the fan and compressor on and off to maintain temperature and humidity, turning off when the room is unoccupied.
  • Increase/Decrease Pads: Adjust the temperature setting or timer duration.
  • Timer: Sets a specific time for the unit to turn on or off.
  • Circulaire (on some models): Provides side-to-side air circulation.
  • Vent Control: Opens or closes the vent to allow fresh air into the room or recirculate indoor air.
  • Air Direction: Louvers on the unit can be adjusted horizontally to direct airflow.

The remote control offers similar functionalities, providing convenience for adjusting settings from a distance. The manual emphasizes that the ENERGY SAVER feature is not available on all models.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal performance and longevity of the air conditioner. Key maintenance tasks include:

  • Grille and Case Cleaning: The front grille and case should be cleaned with water and a mild detergent. Avoid using bleach or abrasives.
  • Outdoor Coils Cleaning: The outdoor coils should be checked regularly for dirt and soot. If clogged, professional cleaning is recommended.
  • Air Filter Cleaning/Replacement: The air filter, located behind the front grille, should be checked and cleaned at least every 30 days or more often if necessary. To remove the filter, pull up slightly on the inlet grille and pull it down. The filter can be cleaned with warm, soapy water and dried thoroughly before replacement. The manual cautions against operating the air conditioner without a filter, as dirt and lint can clog it and reduce performance.
  • Winter Storage: If the unit is not used during winter, it should be stored properly to prevent damage.

The manual also provides troubleshooting tips for common issues such as the air conditioner not starting, not cooling well, freezing up, remote control not working, water drips outside, water drips indoors, water collects in the base pan, and timer feature not working properly. It also describes normal operating sounds, such as pinging noises from the condenser, water overflow from the base pan on humid or rainy days, and the fan running even when the compressor does not.
