Overview

This document is an owner's manual for GE Profile Branded Dual Fuel Recreational Vehicle Water Heater Models PR06DSATB* and PR10DSATB*.

Function Description

The GE Profile Recreational Vehicle Water Heater is a dual-fuel appliance designed to provide hot water in recreational vehicles (RVs). It can operate using either liquid propane (LP) gas or 120 VAC electric power, or both simultaneously for faster hot water recovery. The water heater is equipped with safety controls, including a combination thermostat and a high-limit Energy-Cut-Off (ECO) control, to prevent excessive water temperatures. It is designed for installation within the RV sidewall, with an exterior access door for maintenance and venting.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Models: PR06DSATB* (6 Gallon Dual Fuel) and PR10DSATB* (10 Gallon Dual Fuel).
  • Fuel Type: Liquid Propane (LP) gas only for gas heating.
  • Electrical Supply:
    • 12 VDC for control connections (minimum 18 AWG wire size).
    • 120 VAC, 60 Hz for electric heating element (requires a dedicated, properly grounded 15A minimum, three-prong receptacle).
  • Gas Supply Pressure: Must not exceed 13" w.c. for LP gas.
  • Water Connections: 1/2" male NPT for both hot (red cover) and cold (blue cover) water connections.
  • Temperature and Pressure Relief Valve: Rated for a maximum of 150 PSI (1.03 MPa). The BTUH rating of the relief valve must not be less than the input rating of the water heater (1 watt = 3.412 BTUH).
  • Factory Thermostat Setting: 125°F (52°C) to reduce the risk of scald injury.
  • Cutout Dimensions:
    • PR06DSATB (6 Gallon):* Height: 12.75 in (31.75 cm), Width: 12.75 in (31.75 cm), Depth: 18.5 in (47 cm).
    • PR10DSATB (10 Gallon):* Height: 12.75 in (31.75 cm), Width: 12.75 in (31.75 cm), Depth: 26.25 in (66.7 cm).

Usage Features

  • Dual Fuel Operation: The water heater can be operated in gas-only, electric-only, or combined gas and electric heating modes.
  • Control Switch: A dedicated control switch panel, typically installed inside the RV, features separate switches for electric heating (lightning bolt icon) and gas heating (flame icon), along with an indicator light.
  • Gas Heating: When the gas heating switch is turned "ON," the water heater attempts ignition three times. A successful ignition illuminates the indicator light. If ignition fails after three attempts, the indicator light blinks, and the sequence can be reset by cycling the switch "OFF" then "ON."
  • Electric Heating: Turning the electric heating switch "ON" closes the electric heating element relay, allowing 120 VAC power to the heating element.
  • Combined Heating: Both gas and electric heating switches can be turned "ON" simultaneously for faster hot water recovery.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Always ensure the tank is full of water before turning on the heater to prevent damage.
    • Do not operate if the cold water supply shut-off valve is closed.
    • Do not store or use flammable vapors or liquids near the appliance.
    • In case of gas smell, evacuate the vehicle, shut off gas supply, avoid electrical switches, and contact a qualified technician or fire department.
    • Hydrogen gas can accumulate in hot water systems unused for two weeks or more; open hot water faucets for several minutes to dissipate it before using electrical appliances connected to the system.
    • Water temperatures above 125°F can cause severe scalds or death; always check water temperature before bathing or showering, especially for children, the disabled, and the elderly.

Maintenance Features

  • Routine Preventive Maintenance: An annual program is recommended, including inspecting the temperature and pressure relief valve, heating elements, thermostats, wiring, gas heating system, flue, and anode rod.
  • Temperature and Pressure Relief Valve: Should be lifted and released annually to ensure free operation. If it drips periodically, it may indicate thermal expansion in a closed water supply system, which should be corrected by a plumbing inspector.
  • Gas Heating System and Flue: Keep the vent and combustion air intake clear of dirt, debris, and obstructions. Inspect and clean the flue regularly with a flexible wire brush. Periodically inspect the main burner orifice and sparking module for blockages.
  • Flame Appearance: Visually inspect the main burner flame during operation. A correct flame is blue or blue/orange and stable. An incorrect flame is yellow or yellow/orange and unstable, indicating a potential issue requiring service.
  • Draining and Flushing: The water heater tank should be drained and flushed annually to remove hard water deposits and sediment. This involves turning off power and gas, shutting off cold water supply, removing the anode rod, and opening a hot water faucet or lifting the relief valve handle to admit air. Flushing should continue until water runs clear.
  • Anode Rod Maintenance: The anode rod must be removed and inspected annually and replaced if more than 6" (15.2 cm) of core wire is exposed. Artificially softened water can accelerate anode rod consumption. Operation without an anode rod will shorten the tank's life and void warranty coverage.
  • Winterizing: For freezing weather or long-term storage, the water heater must be winterized by draining and flushing. If the RV plumbing system uses anti-freeze, a bypass system should be engaged on the hot and cold water connections to prevent anti-freeze from entering the water heater.
  • Extended Shutdown Periods: For long periods of inactivity, turn off power and water, and drain the water heater to conserve energy and prevent hydrogen gas buildup.
  • Troubleshooting Tips: The manual provides a troubleshooting chart to address common issues like insufficient hot water, excessive hot water, rumbling noise, water dripping, relief valve popping/draining, and rotten egg smell.
  • Replacement Parts: A diagram and list of replacement parts are provided, with instructions for ordering through GEApplianceparts.com. Service and repairs of electrical wiring, thermostats, heating elements, or other operating controls should only be performed by qualified service personnel.
