Overview

This document describes the GUV SHIELD SERIES (30 and 50) UV Water Disinfection System, an ultraviolet (UV) water treatment unit designed to purify water by exposing it to UV light. The system consists of a disinfection chamber, UV lamps, quartz sleeves, compression nuts, a power supply, O-rings, and optionally, wiper rings for manual cleaning.

Function Description

The primary function of the GUV SHIELD SERIES is to disinfect water using UV light. UV light is effective in neutralizing microorganisms by disrupting their DNA, preventing them from reproducing and rendering them harmless. The system is designed to be installed in a water line, treating water as it flows through the disinfection chamber.

The unit operates by housing UV lamps within quartz sleeves inside a stainless steel chamber. Water flows through the chamber, passing around the quartz sleeves, and is exposed to the UV light emitted by the lamps. This exposure disinfects the water without the use of chemicals, making it a safe and environmentally friendly method of water purification.

The system is designed for indoor use and should be installed after any pre-treatment equipment, such as softeners, carbon filters, or reverse osmosis systems. It is also recommended to install it after the storage tank and before the water line splits to the hot water heater to ensure all household water is treated.

An optional automatic shut-off valve (normally closed solenoid) can be integrated into the system. This device stops water flow if the UV lamp fails or if the UV intensity drops below a safe level. This ensures that only properly disinfected water passes through the system, preventing the consumption of untreated water in case of a system malfunction or power outage. The solenoid valve has an arrow indicating flow direction and should be installed accordingly.

The system can also be equipped with a UV monitoring system. A sensor views one lamp and provides an output from 0-100%. A low reading on this meter can indicate that the lamp is nearing the end of its life, the quartz sleeve is fouled, or the water quality has changed, prompting the user to take corrective action.

Usage Features

The GUV SHIELD SERIES is designed for ease of use and monitoring. The unit comes with a remote Ballast Control Center (BCC) which houses the electronics and provides operational status. The BCC features a green LED light that indicates when the lamp is operating correctly. If this LED goes out, it signals a potential lamp failure. Some units also include an audible alarm that will sound in the event of a lamp failure, providing an additional layer of notification.

A non-resettable digital run time meter is included in the system. This meter tracks the operating hours of the UV lamps, allowing users to know precisely when a lamp replacement is due. Lamps should be replaced every 9,000 hours to maintain optimal disinfection performance.

Installation of the unit can be done either vertically or horizontally. When installing horizontally, it is recommended that the inlet/outlet face upwards to prevent air from becoming trapped in the chamber. For vertical installations, the inlet should be at the bottom for optimal hydraulic characteristics. If the system has a sensor port, it should not be installed facing down.

The ballast control should be connected to a grounded outlet, and for safety, it is recommended to connect the system to a ground fault interrupt circuit. If the incoming power is prone to surges, a surge suppressor is also recommended.

When installing the quartz sleeves, users should insert them into the unit and ensure they extend equally out of both sides. The O-rings should be properly seated in the compression nuts, which are then hand-tightened to create a secure, watertight seal. Care must be taken not to overtighten, as this could crack the quartz sleeve. After installation, the unit should be slowly pressurized with water for five minutes to check for leaks before lamp installation.

For systems with manual wipers, the front head is removable, while the back head is welded closed. The removable head with a gasket facilitates the manual cleaning process.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the effective operation of the GUV SHIELD SERIES. The UV lamps need to be replaced annually, or after 9,000 hours of operation, to ensure continuous and effective disinfection. The quartz sleeves also require regular inspection and cleaning. The frequency of cleaning depends on the water quality.

To clean the quartz sleeve, it can be washed with soap and water. If the quartz is stained, products like CLR or Lime-A-way can be used. When handling lamps and quartz, it is recommended to use gloves to prevent dirt and skin oils from affecting the UV output. If they do get dirty, they should be wiped with alcohol.

For units equipped with a manual quartz cleaning system, a plunger allows the operator to push a yoke back and forth to clean the UV system's quartz sleeves without disassembling the disinfection chamber. This should be done a few times a month. When using the wiper system, it's important to ensure that the blades are not parked in front of the UV sensor, as this can lead to false readings. The O-rings on the wiper may also need periodic replacement, and the system should be opened once a year to inspect the quartz and wiper rings.

Before any servicing, it is essential to disconnect all power to the unit to prevent serious injury or death from UV light exposure or electrical shock. The service instructions include disconnecting power, removing the expired lamp, depressurizing and draining the chamber, inspecting and cleaning the quartz sleeve, reassembling the quartz sleeve, pressurizing and checking for leaks, installing a new UV lamp, securely attaching the lamp connector, and finally, powering the system back up.

The manual also includes a chart to record lamp changes, helping users keep track of their maintenance schedule. A warranty sheet is provided, covering the stainless steel chamber for 7 years and electrical components for 1 year. UV lamps are warranted for 30 days, with pro-rated replacement or refund based on the expected lamp life of 9,000 hours after the initial 30 days.
