Overview

This document outlines the installation and setup process for the Global Payments Countertop – Desk/5000 terminal when used with a Desk/1500 External PIN Pad (EPP). It serves as a quick start guide, providing step-by-step instructions for connecting the EPP and initiating its registration with the main terminal.

Function Description

The Global Payments Countertop – Desk/5000 is a payment terminal designed for countertop use, facilitating various payment transactions. When paired with the Desk/1500 External PIN Pad (EPP), it enhances the payment experience by providing a separate, customer-facing device for PIN entry and other interactive functions. This separation can improve security and convenience, allowing customers to enter sensitive information directly on the EPP while the main terminal remains with the merchant. The EPP integrates with the Desk/5000 terminal via a USB connection, enabling secure communication and data exchange for payment processing. The installation process focuses on physically connecting the EPP and then authorizing it within the terminal's software.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Terminal Model: Desk/5000 (main countertop terminal)
  • External PIN Pad Model: Desk/1500 (EPP)
  • Connection Type: USB Host port on the Desk/5000 terminal for the PIN Pad USB connector.
  • Power Supply: The guide emphasizes ensuring the power supply is removed from the main terminal before starting the installation, indicating that the EPP likely draws power from the main terminal via the USB connection or has its own power source not detailed in this guide.
  • Software Version: The terminal runs a "Core App" and "Global Canada" version. The guide specifies a minimum required version (e.g., Core App 1205, Global Canada 1201/1202) for proper EPP functionality. If the terminal's software is older, an update is required, which can be initiated by contacting Global Payments Customer Care.
  • Security Features: The EPP requires an authorization process, including Manager ID and Password entry, to ensure secure registration and prevent unauthorized device usage. This process culminates in a "PINPAD UPDATE SUCCESSFUL" message, confirming secure integration.

Usage Features

  • Customer-Facing PIN Entry: The Desk/1500 EPP provides a dedicated interface for customers to enter their PINs, enhancing transaction security and customer privacy.
  • Interactive Display: While not explicitly detailed, EPPs typically feature a display for transaction prompts, amounts, and other customer interactions.
  • Simplified Installation: The guide provides clear, illustrated steps for physical connection, making the setup process straightforward for merchants.
  • Software-Driven Authorization: The EPP's integration is managed through the terminal's software, requiring specific steps to authorize the new device, ensuring proper functionality and security.
  • Error Handling: The guide outlines what to do if the terminal's software version is outdated, directing users to customer support for updates. It also describes the terminal reboot process if the EPP authorization is canceled.
  • Manager Access Control: The authorization process requires a Manager ID and Password, indicating a level of access control to prevent unauthorized changes to the terminal's configuration.

Maintenance Features

  • Trapdoor Access: The terminal features a trapdoor that needs to be unclipped and removed to access internal components, specifically for managing the terminal cable harness. This design allows for internal access for maintenance or cable management.
  • Cable Management: The guide instructs on removing a "harness part" of the terminal cable by cutting it off, suggesting a specific cable configuration or an older, unnecessary component that needs to be removed for the EPP connection. This indicates a degree of field-level cable modification might be required during initial setup.
  • Software Updates: The system supports software updates, which are crucial for maintaining security, adding new features, and ensuring compatibility. The guide directs users to customer care for initiating these updates if their terminal's software is not up to date.
  • Customer Support: Global Payments Customer Care is highlighted as a key resource for troubleshooting, software updates, and any questions regarding the terminal and EPP. This ensures ongoing support for merchants.
  • Documentation and Resources: The guide points to online resources (globalpaymentsinc.ca, Customer Support, Support Resources, Technology Guide) for additional instructions and information, facilitating self-service maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Secure Reassembly: Instructions for closing the trapdoor emphasize maintaining a specific distance for clip insertion, ensuring proper and secure reassembly of the terminal's casing after internal access.
