The Globe Quick Response GL Series Dry Type Horizontal Sidewall Sprinkler is designed for use in specific environments where freezing conditions are present, or where sediment and foreign materials might accumulate within ordinary horizontal pipe nipples. This sprinkler is engineered to provide rapid activation in the event of a fire.
At the core of the GL Series sprinkler's operation is a 3mm frangible glass ampule, which serves as the thermosensitive element. This innovative design allows the sprinkler to operate approximately six times faster than traditional sprinklers. When the ampule reaches its rated temperature, the fluid inside expands, increasing internal pressure until the glass shatters. This rapid response mechanism ensures that water discharge begins quickly, distributing water in an approved pattern to suppress the fire.
Upon activation, the shattering of the glass ampule releases the bulb seat, which in turn causes the inner tube assembly to move. This movement allows the spring assembly to pivot alongside the inner tube, opening the sprinkler and enabling water to flow through it. The water is then distributed by the deflector in a pattern designed for effective fire suppression. While these sprinklers can be installed wherever standard spray sprinklers are specified, their quick response capability significantly enhances safety to life. The GL Series Dry Type Horizontal Sidewall Sprinkler is constructed with durable materials to ensure reliability and longevity. The frame is made of bronze, while the deflector and screw are brass. The bulb seat is also brass, and the spring is nickel alloy. A teflon seal ensures a tight closure, and the retainer is brass with a stainless steel pin. A stainless steel torsion spring and a brass orifice insert further contribute to the sprinkler's robust design. The bulb itself is made of glass and contains an alcohol-based solution. The sprinkler is available with either a 3/4" NPT or 1" NPT connection, and features a galvanized steel outer tube and a stainless steel inner tube.
For proper installation, Globe GL Series Dry Pendent Sprinklers must adhere to the requirements outlined in NFPA 13. These sprinklers are designed to be installed by applying a pipe wrench to the outer tube. In situations where this is not feasible, a dedicated sprinkler head wrench may be used, with extreme caution, especially for lengths up to approximately 18 inches. Applying excessive force during installation can distort the frame, potentially rendering the unit inoperable.

The GL Series sprinklers are available in various temperature ratings, including 135°F (57°C), 155°F (68°C), 175°F (79°C), 200°F (93°C), and 286°F (141°C). Each temperature rating is associated with a specific bulb color: orange/red for 135°F/155°F, yellow/green for 175°F/200°F, and blue for 286°F. These color codes correspond to N.F.P.A. maximum ceiling temperatures, ensuring compliance with safety standards. The sprinkler is designed to operate effectively within a water working pressure rating of 175 psi (12 Bars) and is factory tested hydrostatically to 500 psi (34 Bars). The maximum low temperature glass bulb rating is -67°F (-55°C), ensuring its resilience in extremely cold conditions.
