The Godox RING72 Macro LED Ring Light is a compact and portable lighting solution designed for close-up photography. Its primary function is to provide consistent and adjustable illumination for macro subjects, making it ideal for a variety of specialized applications such as portrait photography, jewelry photography, insect and plant photography, and dental photography.
The RING72 consists of two main components: a ring light body and a controller. The ring light body, which houses 72 premium LED beads, is designed to be mounted directly onto the camera lens. This placement ensures even and shadow-free lighting for macro subjects. The controller, on the other hand, attaches to the camera's hot shoe, providing convenient access to all lighting adjustments.
A key feature of the RING72 is its ability to separately control the brightness of the left and right halves of the ring light. This allows users to create side-lighting effects, adding depth and dimension to their macro shots. The coiled cord connecting the ring light to the controller offers flexibility and convenience during use.
The device supports two types of power supply: four AA alkaline or rechargeable Ni-MH batteries, or a 7.2V/2600mAh lithium battery. This dual power option provides versatility, allowing users to choose the most suitable power source for their needs. The lithium battery, which can be purchased separately, offers a long lifespan with approximately 450 charging and discharging cycles.
The RING72 is designed for ease of installation and operation. To install the controller, users first loosen a knob at its bottom, then slide the controller's base mount into the camera's hot shoe socket, and finally tighten the knob to secure it. Removing the controller involves loosening the knob and sliding it out.
For the ring LED head, the product comes with eight different adapter rings, accommodating lens diameters from 49mm to 82mm (though the 82mm adapter ring is not included). Users select the appropriate adapter ring for their camera lens, install it, and then buckle the ring LED head onto the adapter ring.
Operating the LED lights is straightforward. To turn on the device, simply slide the power switch to "ON." The controller features a power indicator display with four green lights, indicating the remaining battery power in increments of 25%. A flashing left-most indicator signals low battery, prompting the user to replace the batteries.
Brightness adjustment is a core functionality. The left and right halves of the ring light can be turned on or off independently using dedicated buttons. When a half is turned on, its corresponding button lights up green. Short presses of these buttons toggle the light on or off, and turning it back on restores the previous brightness value.
The brightness for each half can be adjusted from 10% to 100% across 10 levels, with each level incrementing by 10%. This granular control allows for precise lighting adjustments. When both L and R half-light buttons are lit green, indicating both halves are on, users can freely adjust their brightness independently using the respective adjustment knobs. This separate control is crucial for achieving specific lighting effects and meeting diverse user needs in macro photography.
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of the Godox RING72. Users are advised to immediately turn off the power if any abnormality is detected during operation to identify and address the cause. The lamp body should be handled with care to avoid vibration, and regular dust removal from its surface is recommended.
It is normal for the lamp body to become slightly warm during use, but continuous flashing without special need should be avoided. For any repairs, the device should be taken to a repair department designated by the factory, ensuring the use of original parts.
The product comes with a one-year warranty, though consumables like lamps are not covered. All maintenance services must be handled by the factory-designated maintenance department. If the product breaks down or gets wet, it should only be repaired by professionals. The manufacturer also notes that the product design and specifications are subject to change without notice.
Regarding battery care, specific precautions are provided for both AA alkaline and lithium batteries. For AA alkaline batteries, it's important to keep connections clean and dry, use a new set of four batteries of the same brand, and replace all four simultaneously. Batteries should not be disassembled, short-circuited, or exposed to fire or water. If the light is not used for an extended period, the batteries should be removed from the slot.
For lithium batteries, users must avoid short-circuiting the positive and negative poles. Since these batteries are not waterproof, measures should be taken to protect them in rainy or damp environments. The product should be kept out of reach of children. Continuous charging for over 24 hours is not recommended. Lithium batteries should be stored in dry, cool, and well-ventilated places and never put aside or into fire. Dead batteries must be disposed of according to local regulations. It is advised to charge the battery to approximately 60% before long-term storage, and a full recharge should be performed if the battery has been unused for over three months. It is also noted that battery degradation over time due to life limitation is normal.
