Overview

This document provides installation and operating instructions for Golden Blount top-vent fireplaces, specifically models HD5030-TV "EL GRANDE" and HD4240-TV "SKYSCRAPER." These fireplaces are approved for use with natural gas or propane gas, though the HD4240-TV model requires a power vent fan when used with propane. It is crucial for installers and consumers to retain this manual for reference.

Function Description

The Golden Blount top-vent fireplaces are designed as gas-fired appliances that simulate the appearance of a wood-burning fireplace. They are top-vented, meaning exhaust flue gases are expelled through a 10" B-type gas vent pipe. Combustion air is drawn from the room where the unit is installed and/or from an optional outside air kit. The control system is a millivolt type, featuring an on-off shut-off valve, a gas control valve, a standing pilot light assembly, a piezo ignitor, and an on-off rocker switch. These fireplaces are designed to burn only with the specific gas log set supplied with the unit to ensure safety and proper operation.

Usage Features

  • Gas Type: The fireplaces are compatible with both natural gas and propane, but users must ensure the correct gas type is used for their specific unit, as indicated on the firebox label. Propane models may require additional equipment like a power vent fan for the HD4240-TV.
  • Damper Control: The flue damper must always be in the full open position when the gas logs are burning. A damper control lever is provided for this purpose.
  • Ignition: The fireplaces feature a piezo ignitor for lighting the pilot light. Detailed lighting instructions are provided, emphasizing safety precautions such as waiting for gas to clear and holding the control knob down after pilot ignition.
  • Flame Appearance: The gas burner is designed to produce a yellow flame to mimic real wood burning. An adjustment valve and key are supplied for the CEBB (controlled ember bed burner) to adjust the front flame height to achieve the desired aesthetic.
  • Outside Air Kit (Optional/Included Components): Components for an outside combustion air system are supplied, with the exception of the 4" flex duct. This system is recommended for use whenever possible. Control knobs allow users to open or close the outside air supply.
  • Log Placement: Specific instructions and visual guides are provided for the correct placement of the gas logs for both HD5030-TV and HD4240TBF models. Accurate log placement is essential for proper flame appearance and safe operation.
  • Gas Pressure Requirements: For optimal performance, natural gas pressure should be between 7" to 12" W.C., and propane gas pressure should be 11" W.C. The maximum inlet gas pressure should not exceed 10" for natural gas and 13" for LP gases. If using LP gas, a regulator at the tank is required to reduce pressure to between 11 and 13 inches water column.
  • Safety Features: The unit includes a high limit switch and a damper switch as part of its wiring system, contributing to safe operation.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning: Regular cleaning is essential. The control compartment, burners, and circulating air passageways must be kept clean to ensure adequate combustion and ventilation air. More frequent cleaning may be needed if there is excessive lint from carpeting or bedding material. Soot accumulation on logs, which is normal for yellow flames, can be easily removed with a vacuum cleaner or a soft brush.
  • Professional Inspection: The appliance should be inspected before use and at least annually by a professional service person. This includes checking the venting system for proper airflow.
  • Pilot Inspection: The pilot should be visually inspected periodically. Any dust or lint accumulations should be brushed or blown away. If the pilot orifice is plugged, disassembly may be required to remove foreign material.
  • Gas Leak Detection: Users are instructed on how to detect gas leaks (by smell or using a soap and water solution) and the critical steps to take if a leak is suspected.
  • Component Replacement: Replacement parts are available from Golden Blount dealers. Tampering with components is dangerous and voids all warranties; faulty components must be replaced with approved parts.
  • Clearance Maintenance: The appliance area must be kept clear and free from combustible materials, gasoline, and other flammable vapors and liquids. The flow of combustion and ventilation air must not be obstructed, and the front of the appliance should be clear of all obstacles.
  • Soot Reduction (LP Models): For LP gas models, moderate soot accumulation is normal. To minimize this, users can reduce flame impingement by spacing the front and back logs as far apart as possible.
