How To Replace Your
Lumex® Set N' Go Rollator Brakes
1. The following items are needed to replace
your handbrakes:
Channel Lock Pliers
Thick Towel or Rag
Replacement Handbrake
2. Wrap towel around handgrip for protection,
then use pliers to apply pressure and rotate
handgrip down as shown. You will hear a pop as
handgrip adhesive releases. Continue twisting to
slide handgrip off.
You can now remove the top screw shown
above, that secures the brake assembly onto the
handle tubing.
3. You will see a spring and cable mechanism on
the rear wheels. Identify the brass cable lock and
loosen the socket head cap screw several turns;
you can then remove the brass cable lock by
pulling straight downward. Pull firmly to
remove the end cable cap. You will have the
pieces shown in the right side picture.
4. Install the brake handle onto the rollator
handle tubing. Feed the cable through the leg
bracket, then feed the spring onto the cable as
shown. Next support the cable and slide the
brass cable stop onto the end of the cable while
trying to avoid bending any cable strands.
Once the brass cable stop is flush with the
spring, tighten the socket head cap screw.
5. Support the brake shoe, lift the spring, and
compress it enough so the shoe will fit between
the spring and the brass cable stop. The cable
stop must go completely below the brake shoe.
Notice, at this point the brake is not tensioned
properly and the brake shoe is far from the tire.

Overview

This document outlines the procedure for replacing the handbrakes on a Lumex® Set N' Go Rollator. The rollator is a mobility aid designed to assist individuals with walking, providing support and stability. The handbrakes are a critical safety component, allowing the user to control the speed and stop the rollator.

Function Description:

The Lumex® Set N' Go Rollator is a wheeled walking aid equipped with handbrakes to ensure user safety and control. The handbrakes operate by applying pressure to the rear wheels, slowing or stopping the rollator. Each handbrake assembly consists of a lever, a cable, a spring, a brass cable lock, and a brake shoe. When the lever is squeezed, the cable pulls the brake shoe against the tire, creating friction and braking the wheel. The design allows for independent braking of each rear wheel, offering precise control. The rollator's overall function is to enhance mobility and independence for users who require walking assistance.

Important Technical Specifications (Inferred from the replacement procedure):

  • Brake Mechanism: Cable-actuated, friction-based braking system.
  • Brake Components: Lever, cable, spring, brass cable lock, socket head cap screw, brake shoe, end cable cap.
  • Brake Shoe to Tire Clearance: Approximately 2 millimeters (equivalent to the thickness of two stacked pennies) when the brake is not engaged. This clearance is crucial for proper brake function and to prevent constant drag.
  • Handgrip Attachment: Adhesive-based, requiring specific adhesives like spray adhesive, epoxy, Gorilla Glue, or rubber cement for secure reinstallation.
  • Handgrip Removal: Requires channel lock pliers and a thick towel or rag to protect the handgrip during removal, indicating a tight, possibly adhesive-secured fit.
  • Cable Lock Mechanism: Utilizes a brass cable lock secured by a socket head cap screw, allowing for adjustment of cable tension.
  • Handle Height Adjustment: Implied by the instruction to "Position the handles at the same height and secure with knob and bolt," suggesting adjustable handle height for user comfort.

Usage Features:

  • Braking Control: The handbrakes provide immediate control over the rollator's movement, essential for navigating various terrains and ensuring user safety.
  • Ergonomic Handgrips: The handgrips are designed to be comfortable and secure, allowing users to maintain a firm hold while operating the rollator and its brakes. The reinstallation process emphasizes proper positioning and feel.
  • Adjustable Handles: The ability to adjust handle height (inferred) allows for customization to suit different user heights, promoting proper posture and reducing strain during use.
  • Stability: As a rollator, it offers inherent stability with its wheeled design, further enhanced by the reliable braking system.

Maintenance Features:

  • Handbrake Replacement: The document provides a detailed, step-by-step guide for replacing the handbrakes, indicating that this is a user-serviceable or technician-serviceable component.
  • Tools Required for Maintenance: Channel lock pliers, a thick towel or rag, and a replacement handbrake are specified, suggesting common tools are sufficient for the procedure.
  • Adhesive Requirement: Reinstallation of the handgrips necessitates the use of specific adhesives, highlighting the importance of secure attachment for safety and durability.
  • Brake Adjustment: The procedure includes steps for adjusting the brake cable tension to achieve the correct brake shoe-to-tire clearance, which is critical for optimal braking performance and preventing premature wear.
  • Post-Maintenance Checks: Instructions emphasize confirming brake functionality and allowing adhesive to set before using the rollator, ensuring safety after maintenance.
  • Professional Assistance Recommendation: The document advises seeking assistance from a local provider for handbrake replacement if possible, suggesting that while the procedure is outlined, professional expertise might be beneficial for some users. This also implies that replacement parts are available through service providers.
  • Regular Inspection: Although not explicitly stated as a maintenance feature, the detailed replacement guide implies the need for regular inspection of the handbrakes for wear and tear, and timely replacement when necessary to maintain safety. The components like the cable, spring, and brake shoe are subject to wear and should be checked periodically.
  • Component-Level Replacement: The instructions detail the replacement of individual components of the brake assembly, such as the entire handbrake unit, rather than requiring replacement of larger, more expensive parts of the rollator, making maintenance more cost-effective.
