If you're experiencing unsatisfactory dethatching results with your GreenWorks Lawn and Garden Equipment, it could be due to spring tine wear, a faulty cog belt, or the lawn being too tall. To resolve this, adjust the dethatcher cylinder. If the cog belt is faulty, contact an authorized service center. If the lawn has grown too tall, mow it before using the dethatcher.

      Tina Fox DDSJul 31, 2025
If your GreenWorks Lawn and Garden Equipment motor cuts out, it may be due to being blocked by foreign objects or the dethatcher depth being too low. First, switch off the motor, remove the plug from the socket, and wait until the dethatcher has stopped rotating. Remove any foreign objects. If the cylinder has been adjusted for wear without actual wear to the tines, wait approximately 1 minute, then switch on the dethatcher. Also, ensure that the grass is not too tall; mow the lawn before dethatching.

Overview

This document is an owner's manual for the Greenworks 14" 10A Electric Dethatcher, model 27022. It provides comprehensive instructions for safe operation, assembly, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the device.

Function Description

The Greenworks 14" 10A Electric Dethatcher is designed for outdoor use to remove thatch from lawns. Thatch is a layer of dead grass, roots, and other organic matter that accumulates between the soil surface and the green grass blades. Excessive thatch can prevent water, nutrients, and air from reaching the soil, hindering healthy lawn growth. This dethatcher uses rotating tines to loosen and lift thatch, allowing for better absorption of essential elements and promoting a healthier lawn.

Usage Features

  • Starting and Stopping: The dethatcher is started by pressing and holding the Power button, then pulling the bale switch upward to the handlebar. Releasing the bale switch stops the operation.
  • Circuit Breaker: Equipped with a circuit breaker to protect against short-circuit overloads. If the switch pops out, release the trigger, allow the dethatcher to cool for a minute, and then press the circuit breaker to reset. If it pops out again, allow 15-30 minutes for cooling.
  • Cord Retainer: Features a cord retainer to prevent the extension cord from disconnecting during use. The extension cord should be folded into a tight loop, pushed through the bottom hole of the retainer, and then slid over the retaining clip until secured.
  • Depth Adjustment: The dethatching depth is adjusted by turning the hubcaps. There are three settings: "I" for transport (approx. 1 mm above ground), "II" for middle dethatching (approx. 1/8" or 3 mm), and "III" for low dethatching (approx. 3/8" or 10 mm). It is recommended to start at the highest setting ("I") and adjust lower as tines wear down.
  • Operation Guidelines:
    • The lawn should be mowed to approximately 2" (0.05 m) before dethatching to prolong tine life and prevent motor overload.
    • Always pull the dethatcher forward; do not pull it backward while in use.
    • Do not dethatch on slopes greater than 15 degrees.
    • Keep people and pets at least 50' (15 m) away from the dethatcher during use.
    • Wear eye protection, hearing protection, and a dust mask during operation.
    • Avoid using in wet or damp conditions or exposing to rain.
    • Do not use in the presence of flammable liquids or gases.

Maintenance Features

  • Tine Replacement: The tines are replaceable. To replace, disconnect from power, turn the dethatcher over, remove the two star-shaped screws, flat washer, and lock washer securing the tine casing, and remove the two nuts on the opposite side. Press the locker on the shaft edge with a slotted screwdriver to separate the tine casing. Worn or broken tines can then be replaced, ensuring flat and lock washers are used on threads when reassembling.
  • Tine Cartridge Replacement: The entire tine cartridge can be removed and replaced. After removing the cartridge, individual tines can be pushed out using a screwdriver (and potentially a rubber mallet) and new tines inserted, securing them with the pin.
  • Cleaning: The dethatcher should be cleaned after each use and before storage. Use a clean cloth to remove dirt, dust, oil, and grease. Do not use solvents, brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum-based products, or other petroleum products, as they can damage plastic parts. Do not clean with running water or high pressure.
  • Storage: For storage, the lawn dethatcher can be folded up by releasing the wing nuts. Ensure the power cable does not get trapped during this process. Store the dethatcher in a dry, closed room inaccessible to children.
  • General Inspection: Regularly inspect all tines and cartridges for damage and replace as needed. Check for proper alignment of moving parts, binding, breakage, or any other conditions that may affect operation.
  • Authorized Service: For servicing beyond routine maintenance or if the circuit breaker continues to trip, contact Greenworks customer service at 1-888-909-6757. Only identical replacement parts should be used for servicing.
