Overview

The GRUNDIG Grind and Brew Coffee Maker KM 5340 is a versatile appliance designed for domestic use, offering the convenience of grinding fresh coffee beans and brewing coffee in a single unit. This coffee maker is equipped with a range of features to enhance the coffee-making experience, from adjustable grind settings to programmable brewing times.

Function Description

The primary function of the KM 5340 is to grind whole roasted coffee beans and then brew coffee directly into a thermal jug. It integrates a coffee grinder, a water tank, a filter basket, and a brewing system. Users can choose to grind and brew coffee from whole beans or, if preferred, use pre-ground coffee by turning off the grinding function. The appliance is designed to produce up to 10 cups of coffee, with a 1.25L stainless steel thermal jug to keep the coffee hot for an extended period.

Usage Features

The coffee maker offers several user-friendly features:

  • 24-Hour Preset Timer: This allows users to program the coffee maker to start grinding and brewing coffee at a specific time, ensuring fresh coffee is ready when desired. The "auto" function facilitates this programming, and users can adjust the preset time using the "h" and "min" buttons.
  • Adjustable Coffee Grinder: The integrated coffee grinder features a selection knob (1-9) that allows users to adjust the fineness of the grind, catering to different preferences for coffee strength and flavor. It is crucial to only use roasted coffee beans in the grinder, as other foods like nuts, spices, or unroasted beans can damage the blades and impair effectiveness. The appliance is not intended to be used solely as a coffee grinder; it must complete its full cycle from grinding to brewing to prevent motor overheating.
  • Coffee Strength Selection: Users can choose from three different coffee strengths: low, medium, or strong, by pressing the strength selection button repeatedly. This allows for customization of the coffee to individual taste.
  • Cup Selection: The coffee maker allows users to select the number of cups they wish to brew (2, 4, 6, 8, or 10 cups), ensuring that the appropriate amount of water and coffee is used for the desired quantity.
  • Drip-Stop Function: Located underneath the filter basket, this feature temporarily stops the flow of coffee, allowing users to remove the thermal jug to pour a cup before the brewing process is complete. However, it is important to return the jug to its stand within 30 seconds to prevent spills.
  • Thermal Jug: The appliance comes with a 1.25L stainless steel thermal jug designed to keep coffee hot for approximately one hour after brewing. The jug has a handle and a lid that twists to a "lock" position, ensuring secure placement and pouring.
  • LCD Screen: An easy-to-read LCD screen displays the time, selected settings (such as coffee strength and number of cups), and indicates when the appliance is grinding and brewing.
  • Automatic Shut-Off: Once the brewing process is complete, the coffee maker automatically shuts off, providing safety and energy efficiency.
  • Water Tank with MAX Marking: The water tank has clear markings up to the 10-cup level, with a "MAX" indicator to prevent overfilling. Only cold, fresh drinking water should be used. An overflow hole is present to manage accidental overfilling.
  • Filter Basket Door: The filter basket is accessed via a door, allowing for easy insertion of a paper filter or the provided permanent filter. It is important not to open this door during the brewing process.
  • Steam Vent: The appliance includes a steam vent, and users are advised to position the lid so that hot steam is directed away from them during operation.

Maintenance Features

Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential to ensure the longevity and optimal performance of the GRUNDIG Grind and Brew Coffee Maker.

  • Daily Cleaning: After each use, the filter basket and thermal jug can be cleaned in a dishwasher or under running water. All parts that come into contact with food or water should be thoroughly dried with a soft cloth. The exterior of the appliance can be cleaned with a damp, soft cloth and a mild cleanser.
  • Coffee Bean Chute Cleaning: The coffee bean chute should be cleaned every 1-2 weeks, depending on frequency of use. This is crucial to prevent ground coffee residues from blocking the chute and potentially damaging the appliance. A cleaning brush is provided for this purpose. To clean, the plug should be disconnected, the flat end of the brush handle inserted into the lock of the chute, and turned to the "unlock" position. After lifting the chute lid, ground coffee residues can be swept into the lower part of the chute and discarded.
  • Descaling: To extend the life of the coffee maker, descaling is recommended at least four times a year, or more frequently in areas with very hard water. A descaling solution specifically designed for coffee makers should be used, following the manufacturer's instructions. The process involves filling the water tank with a mixture of water and descaling solution, running a portion through the machine, letting it soak, and then running the remaining mixture. This is followed by several rinses with fresh water to ensure all descaling solution is removed.
  • Storage: If the appliance will not be used for an extended period, it should be unplugged, thoroughly cleaned, and completely dried before being stored in a cool, dry place, out of reach of children.
  • Safety Precautions for Cleaning: Users are cautioned against immersing the appliance, power cord, or power plug in water or any other liquid. Petrol, solvents, abrasive cleaners, metal objects, or hard brushes should not be used for cleaning. The appliance must be cool before cleaning.

By following these usage and maintenance guidelines, users can enjoy fresh, perfectly brewed coffee from their GRUNDIG Grind and Brew Coffee Maker KM 5340 for many years.
