Do you have a question about the Grundig TK2400 FM and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Grundig TK 2400 FM is an automatic, high-performance tape recorder with integrated FM radio, designed for both portable and stationary use. It supports various power sources and offers a range of features for recording, playback, and radio reception.

Function Description:

The TK 2400 FM is a four-track tape recorder capable of recording and playing back on four separate tracks. This allows for extended recording times and flexible usage. The integrated FM radio enables direct recording of radio programs onto tape. It also features universal input and output for connecting external devices such as microphones (with start/stop remote control), record players, and other radio receivers, allowing for disc recording and tape copying. Synchronous playback recordings are possible with an additional amplifier (type 229).

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Supply: The device can operate on four different types of power supplies:
    • Six 1.5 V primary cells (batteries).
    • Rechargeable dryfit-PC-Accu 476.
    • GRUNDIG transistor mains unit type TN 14 (for mains operation and charging the dryfit-PC-Accu 476).
    • External DC power supply of 6...10 V (e.g., a 6 V car battery).
  • Tape Speed: Two selectable tape speeds: 4.75 cm/s (1 7/8 ips) for speech and popular music, and 9.5 cm/s (3 3/4 ips) for higher quality recordings.
  • Recording/Playing Time: Up to 8 hours with a GD 13 tape.
  • Fast Wind Time: Approximately 140 seconds for a GL 13 tape.
  • Frequency Response:
    • 4.75 cm/s: 60 Hz...9 kHz
    • 9.5 cm/s: 60 Hz...15 kHz
  • Dynamic Range: ≥ 47 dB.
  • Wow and Flutter: ≤ ±0.4% (at 4.75 cm/s) and ≤ ±0.25% (at 9.5 cm/s).
  • Drive Unit: Tape speed is held constant by compensating flywheels.
  • Automatic Level Control: Switchable.
  • Recording Level and Battery Indicator: Via a moving coil meter.
  • Radio Unit: FM with automatic fine tuning (AFC). Station selection with a rotary knob and step-down gearing. Telescopic antenna. Input sensitivity: approx. 0.5 µV for 1 V at output. FM range: 87.5...108 MHz.
  • Output Power: 2 Watts (sinusoidal permanent signal).
  • Loudspeaker: Elliptical, 140 x 95 mm.
  • Dimensions: 346 x 217 x 113 mm.
  • Weight: Approximately 4.7 kg (10.5 lbs).
  • Transistors and Diodes: Amplifier: 11 transistors + 6 diodes; Motor Network: 10 transistors + 5 diodes; Radio Section: 5 transistors + 6 diodes.

Usage Features:

  • Controls: The device features intuitive controls including tape speed buttons, radio ON/OFF buttons, recording button, forward wind, start, stop, pause, and fast rewind buttons.
  • Recording: To record, press and hold the recording button until the start button engages. The recording level can be set manually using the level control (up to 9) or automatically (AUT) for optimal modulation. The built-in radio program can be recorded simultaneously.
  • Playback: Start tape playback by pressing the start button. The volume is controlled by the volume regulator, and tone balance (treble/bass) can be adjusted.
  • Track Selection: The TK 2400 FM records on four tracks. Tracks 1 and 3 are recorded on one side of the tape, and tracks 2 and 4 on the other side after turning the tape over. Simultaneous listening to tracks 1 and 3, or 2 and 4, is possible by pressing both track selector buttons.
  • Radio Reception: The telescopic antenna can be oriented for optimal reception. The automatic fine tuning (AFC) ensures stable reception.
  • Microphone Remote Control: The GDM 305 microphone allows for start/stop control of the recorder, which is useful for editing recordings.
  • External Connections:
    • Loudspeaker Socket (1): For GRUNDIG earphone type 340 or external loudspeaker (4-5 Ω).
    • Universal Input and Output (2): For PTT microphone, record players, radio, and tape copying.
    • External Power Supply Socket (3): For 6-10 V DC sources, such as a car battery.
    • Antenna Socket (4): For connecting an external 60 Ω antenna.
    • Synchro-Playback Socket (5): For connecting an amplifier type 229 for synchronous recordings.
  • Automatic Stop: The recorder automatically stops at the end of the tape or in case of tape breakage.
  • Battery/Mains Operation: A switch in the battery and power pack compartment (accessible after opening the bottom plate) allows selection between "MAINS" or "BATT" operation.

Maintenance Features:

  • Tape Handling: Always use GRUNDIG tapes (GD 13 HiFi, GL 13 HiFi, or GT 11) for optimal performance. Avoid exposing tapes to heat or direct sunlight. If a tape breaks, use a BASF splicing kit to repair it.
  • Cleaning: Regularly clean the tape heads and guides. Dirty felt rings should be replaced.
  • Device Care: The TK 2400 FM is designed for long-term operation. Periodically clean the heads and tape guides. Avoid exposing the device to temperatures higher than 70°C. Clean the casing with a soft, dust-free cloth; do not use abrasive polishes or cleaners.
  • Battery Care: When using batteries, ensure they are fresh and of good quality (e.g., Varta-Pertrix 282 or Daimon 253). Remove batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period to prevent damage from leakage.
  • Accessories: A range of accessories is available, including library cassettes (GK 313), rechargeable accumulators (dryfit-PC-Accu 476), mains units (TN 14), remote-control microphones (GDM 305/305 C), monitor amplifiers (229), headphones (340), car adaptors (381, 386a), carrying straps (492), carrying cases (491), mono mixers (420), and various connecting cables and adaptors (237, 293, 480).
