PHENOLS (0 to 0.200 mg/L)
For water, wastewater and seawater
4-Aminoantipyrine Method*, USEPA accepted for reporting
(distillation is required; see Section 1)**
1. Measure 300 mL
of demineralized
water in a 500-mL
graduated cylinder.
Note: Analyze samples
within four hours to
avoid oxidation; see
Sampling and Storage
following these steps.
2. Pour the
measured
demineralized water
into a 500-mL
separatory funnel (the
blank).
3. Measure 300 mL
of sample in a 500-mL
graduated cylinder.
Note: For proof of
accuracy, a phenol
standard solution
(preparation given in
Accuracy Check) can be
used in place of the
sample.
4. Pour the
measured sample into
another 500-mL
separatory funnel (the
prepared sample).
5. Add 5 mL of
Hardness 1 Buffer to
each separatory
funnel. Stopper.
Shake to mix.
6. Add the contents
of one Phenol Reagent
Powder Pillow to each
separatory funnel.
Stopper. Shake to
dissolve.
Note: Spilled reagent
will affect test accuracy
and is hazardous to skin
and other materials.
