Overview

This document describes the Halfords 2 Tonne Low Profile Hydraulic Trolley Jack, model TH22502, with item code 657099. It is an instruction manual and EC Declaration of Conformity for a lifting device.

Function Description:

The Halfords 2 Tonne Low Profile Hydraulic Trolley Jack is designed for lifting vehicles with a Safe Working Load (SWL) of up to 2 tonnes (2,000 kg). It is intended for lifting purposes only and should always be used in conjunction with properly rated axle stands for supporting the vehicle once lifted. The jack features a low-profile design for improved access under vehicles.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Lifting Capacity: 2 tonnes (2,000 kg)
  • Minimum Height: 8.5 cm
  • Maximum Height: 37.5 cm
  • Saddle Diameter: 6 cm
  • Handle Length: 50 cm
  • Base Length: 56 cm
  • Chassis Width: 21.2 cm
  • Harmonised Standards: EN1494:2000 + A1:2008 (Mobile or movable jacks and associated lifting equipment)
  • Directives: Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC (as amended by 2009/127/EC), The Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 (SI 2008 No.1597), and The Supply of Machinery (Safety) (Amendment) Regulations 2011 (SI 2011 No.2157).

Usage Features:

The jack is operated by pumping the handle to raise the saddle and turning a release valve to lower it.

  • Before First Use: The hydraulic system may contain trapped air. To purge air, open the release valve, pump the handle four times, close the valve, pump until full extension, then open the valve and push the ram down.
  • Moving the Jack: The jack should be moved by placing the handle in the operating lever. It should not be moved when the handle is on the release valve or when under load.
  • Lifting a Vehicle:
    1. Park the vehicle on solid, even, level ground. Apply the handbrake, place the vehicle in gear (P for automatic), and chock the wheels that will remain on the ground.
    2. Tighten the release valve clockwise using the jack handle as a wrench (do not overtighten).
    3. Position the jack under the vehicle's jacking point, ensuring the load is centred on the jack saddle to prevent instability or slipping.
    4. Pump the handle to raise the vehicle to the desired height.
    5. Crucially, IMMEDIATELY support the vehicle with properly rated axle stands under a strong, stable point. Consult the vehicle owner's manual and axle stand instructions.
    6. Never crawl under a vehicle supported only by the jack.
  • Lowering a Vehicle:
    1. Once repairs are complete, raise the vehicle slightly to remove the axle stands.
    2. Using the handle as a wrench, slowly turn the release valve anti-clockwise until the vehicle begins to lower.
    3. Ensure all body parts are clear of the jack and vehicle during raising and lowering.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Never overload the jack beyond its rated SWL.
    • Always check the vehicle owner's manual for gross vehicle weight and specified jacking points.
    • Ensure all body parts are clear during operation.
    • Always use on solid, even, level ground with chocked wheels and the vehicle in gear/handbrake on.
    • Ensure the jack's wheels roll freely and remain on the ground during operation.
    • Do not move or dolly the vehicle while it is on the jack.
    • Do not use extensions, cradles, or modify the jack.
    • Do not use if a fault is suspected.
    • Do not start the vehicle or enter it while raised.

Maintenance Features:

  • User Serviceable Parts: This jack contains no user-serviceable parts. Any modification will render it unsafe.
  • Lubrication: All moving joints, linkages, pivot points, and castor wheels require frequent lubrication with a grease gun.
  • Corrosion Check: Regularly check the plunger, main piston, and linkages for signs of corrosion. Clean light surface corrosion with a suitable maintenance spray. If corrosion is deeper, do not attempt to use.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the jack on all four wheels with the arm and plunger fully lowered to prevent corrosion.
  • Adding Oil:
    1. Only use a quality hydraulic oil adhering to ISO VG 32 or similar. Do NOT use brake fluid, transmission fluid, alcohol, glycerine, detergent motor oil, or dirty oil.
    2. Place the jack on level ground with the lifting arm and plunger fully lowered.
    3. Remove the top cover plate and clean the area around the oil filler plug before removing the plug to prevent dirt from entering.
    4. Fill oil to the level indicated in the diagram (Fig. 1).
  • Inspection Before Each Use: Conduct a visual inspection for leaking hydraulic fluid, cracked welds, damaged, loose, or missing parts. Any damaged, worn, or abnormally operating jack, or one subjected to abnormal load/shock, MUST NOT BE USED.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues like "Jack will not lift load," "Jack will not hold load," "Jack will not lift to its full height," "Jack will not lower completely," and "Jack will not lift smoothly or feels spongy." Solutions include checking the release valve, refilling oil, purging air from the hydraulic system, and checking for broken return springs or binding linkages.
