The HALO H2 ZERO® system is a whole-house water filtration and conditioning system designed to protect plumbing systems from hardness-related scale formation. It operates on a "zero electricity, zero maintenance, zero waste" principle, making it an environmentally friendly and low-upkeep solution for domestic water treatment.
Function Description:
The primary function of the H2 ZERO® system is to prevent scale by transforming dissolved hardness minerals into undissolved crystal microparticles. These microparticles remain suspended in the water, reducing their ability to react and attach to surfaces. This significantly reduces the buildup of scale in pipes, water heaters, and plumbing fixtures. Unlike traditional water softeners, the H2 ZERO® system does not remove beneficial essential minerals from the water.
The system also provides whole-house filtration, removing chemicals and disinfectants from the water supply. It is designed for point-of-entry installation to treat the entire home's domestic water.
Important Technical Specifications:
The manual lists several models:
- H2Z1054-CPI-100
- H2Z1054-CPSM-100
- H2Z1252-CPI-150
- H2Z1252-CPSM-150
Feed Water Chemistry Requirements:
To ensure proper functionality and warranty validity, the feed water must meet specific chemistry requirements:
- Pressure: 15 psi to 90 psi (1.03 bar to 6.2 bar)
- Temperature: 40°F to 100°F
- Free Chlorine: <2 ppm
- pH: 6.5-8.5
- Iron (maximum): 0.3 ppm
- Manganese (maximum): 0.05 ppm
- Copper: 1.3 ppm (For applications with copper concentration greater than 1.3 ppm, consult HALO Water Systems. New copper lines need to be passivated for a minimum of 4 weeks before placing scale media into service. Avoid excessive flux on inner pipe surfaces and use low corrosivity water-soluble flux listed under ASTM B813 standard, or use non-copper pipes.)
- Maximum Hardness: 35 GPG
- Hydrogen Sulfide: None (Media will turn gray and unit will no longer be effective if present.)
- Silica Scaling: The H2 ZERO® media does not reduce silica scaling. A 20 ppm limitation for aesthetic purposes is noted, as silica can act as a binder making water spots and scale residue difficult to remove.
- Dirt and Debris: Water with heavy loads of dirt and debris may require pre-filtration (Sediment Filter SC510) prior to the H2 ZERO® system.
Usage Features:
- Scale Prevention: Transforms hardness minerals into non-adhering microparticles, reducing scale buildup.
- Mineral Retention: Maintains beneficial essential mineral content in the water, unlike traditional softeners.
- Whole-House Treatment: Installed at the point of entry to treat all domestic water.
- Upflow Operation: The system operates in an upflow mode, which is opposite to traditional filtration/softener systems. The bypass valve handles need to be rotated 180° for upflow service position.
- Two-Tank System: The installation process involves two tanks. Tank 1 (Carbon) requires individual flushing (backwash for 20 minutes in upflow, then 10 minutes in downflow, followed by a 10-minute stand pressurized). Tank 2 (Conditioning) can be either a HALO ION in-line conditioner or HALO Proprietary scale media.
- Spotting: Spotting on surfaces (e.g., glass shower doors, dishes) may still occur due to conditioned minerals evaporating. This is normal, and solutions like using squeegees, RainX®, or Lemi-Shine© rinse aid are recommended.
- Toilets: HALO filtered water, when exposed to open air in toilet bowls, can grow mildew and bacteria. Products like CLR or Flush 'n Sparkle® are recommended for cleaning.
- Boiling/Vaporizing Water: White deposits may form when boiling or vaporizing conditioned water due to the reaction between conditioned minerals and extreme heat. Distilled water is suggested for humidifiers or vaporizers if this is an issue.
- Non-Slippery Water: The system uses no sodium or potassium, avoiding the "slimy, slippery" feeling associated with chemically softened water.
Maintenance Features:
- ZERO Maintenance: The system is designed to require no pre or post filter and no regular maintenance.
- ZERO Drain: No drain is required for operation.
- ZERO Waste: No backwash is required, resulting in no water waste.
- ZERO Chemicals: Scale prevention is achieved without the use of chemicals.
- No Pre-Soak Required: The system does not require pre-soaking.
- KDF55 Media: Incorporates KDF55 media, which contributes to longer-lasting carbon.
- Warranty:
- 10-year warranty on carbon media (replacement provided at no charge, except freight and handling, for media failure).
- 5-year warranty on scale media.
- 10-year warranty on control valve parts (repair or replacement at no charge).
- Lifetime warranty for one replacement tank due to manufacturing defect.
- Components for the equipment will be available for the lifetime of the system.
- Comparable components will be provided for obsolete items.
Installation Requirements and Warnings:
- Licensed Contractor: The HALO H2 ZERO® system should be installed ONLY by a licensed contractor.
- Local Codes: Installation must comply with local building and plumbing codes.
- Location: Install in a protected area where water damage is least likely to occur if a leak develops. Do not install where it blocks access to the water heater, main water shutoff, water meter, or electrical panels.
- Temperature: Do not attempt to treat water over 100°F or expose the system to freezing temperatures, as water freezing causes equipment damage.
- Water Heater Connection: Always connect the system to the main water supply pipe before the water heater.
- Solder and Flux: Use only lead-free solder and flux for sweat-solder connections.
- Handling: Handle all components with care; do not drop, drag, or turn components upside down.
- Support: Ensure the floor under the system is clean, level, and strong enough to support the unit.
- Well Water: Do NOT install on a well without proper testing and recommendations from the manufacturer, as this will void the warranty.
- New Copper Lines: New copper lines need to be passivated for a minimum of 4 weeks before placing scale media into service. The system can run filtration only for 4 weeks before putting scale media into service.
- Flushing: Carbon tank must be flushed individually (not while connected to tank 2). This involves backwashing for 20 minutes in upflow, 10 minutes in downflow, and then letting the system stand pressurized for 10 minutes. Soaking the system for 48 hours instead of flushing is an option if time permits.
Limitations and Exclusions (Warranty):
- Warranty is void if the system is not installed and maintained according to local codes and manufacturer's recommendations, or if non-HALO approved replacement components are used.
- Failures from fire, freezing, neglect, accident, alteration, abuse, improper installation, or acts of nature are not covered.
- Water pressure exceeding 80 psi (working or static) or 120 psi (in excess of 5"HG) voids the warranty.
- Internal water temperature exceeding 100°F voids the warranty.
- Influent chlorine exceeding 1 mg/L voids the warranty.
- HALO does not warrant to perform, pay for, or finance any repairs and/or installations. Customers must contact HALO representatives with pictures of installation, serial, and model numbers.
- Warranty is exclusive and in lieu of any other expressed or implied warranties, including merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.
- HALO is not liable for any loss or incidental/consequential damages resulting from misuse or inability to use the equipment.
