Overview

This document describes the Hanna HI 718 Iodine Checker, a portable device designed for measuring iodine concentration in water.

Function Description

The HI 718 Iodine Checker is a compact, handheld colorimeter that measures iodine levels in the range of 0.0 to 12.5 ppm (parts per million). It operates based on the DPD method, an adaptation of the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, 18th edition. In this method, the reaction between iodine and a specific reagent causes a pink tint in the sample. The intensity of this pink color is then measured by the device to determine the iodine concentration.

The device features a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) that shows measurement readings, error messages, and operational prompts. It has a single button for all operations, including turning the meter on, initiating measurements, and zeroing the device. The instrument includes a cuvette holder where sample cuvettes are placed for measurement.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Range: 0.0 to 12.5 ppm
  • Resolution: 0.1 ppm
  • Precision: ±0.1 ppm ±5% of reading @ 25°C
  • Typical EMC Dev.: ±0.1 ppm
  • Light Source: Light Emitting Diode (LED) @ 525 nm
  • Light Detector: Silicon Photocell
  • Method: Adaptation of the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, 18th edition, DPD method. The reaction between iodine and the reagent causes a pink tint in the sample.
  • Environment: 0 to 50°C (32 to 122°F); max 95% RH non-condensing
  • Battery Type: 1 x 1.5V AAA
  • Auto-Shut off: After 2 minutes of non-use and 10 seconds after reading.
  • Dimensions: 81.5 x 61 x 37.5 mm (3.2 x 2.4 x 1.5")
  • Weight: 64 g (2.25 oz.)

Usage Features

The measurement procedure is straightforward:

  1. Power On: Press the button to turn on the meter. The display will show "C.1" and "Add" with "Press" blinking, indicating it's ready for the first step.
  2. Zeroing the Device: Fill a cuvette with 10 mL of unreacted sample and cap it. Place this cuvette into the meter and close the cap. Press the button. The display will show "Add", "C.2" with "Press" blinking, indicating the meter is zeroed.
  3. Reagent Addition: Remove the cuvette, open it, and add the content of one packet of HI 718-25 reagent. Replace the cap and shake gently for 20 seconds to ensure proper mixing.
  4. Measurement: Place the cuvette back into the meter. Wait for 2 minutes and 30 seconds (or press and hold the button until the timer is displayed). The instrument will then directly display the iodine concentration in ppm.

The device provides several error and warning messages to guide the user:

  • L.H. (Light High): Indicates too much light for measurement. Users should check the preparation of the zero cuvette.
  • LLO (Light Low): Indicates insufficient light for measurement. Users should check the preparation of the zero cuvette.
  • InU (Inverted cuvettes): Indicates that the sample and zero cuvettes are inverted.
  • 0.0 (Under range): A blinking "0.0" signifies that the sample absorbs less light than the zero reference. Users should check the procedure and ensure the same cuvette is used for both reference (zero) and measurement.
  • 12.5 (Over Range): A flashing value of the maximum concentration indicates an over-range condition, meaning the sample concentration exceeds the programmed range. Users should dilute the sample and re-run the test.
  • bat (Battery low): The battery needs to be replaced soon.
  • bad (Dead battery): This indicates a completely dead battery. The meter will lock up, and the battery must be replaced to restart the meter.

Tips for accurate measurement include:

  • Ensuring the sample is free of debris.
  • Wiping the cuvette thoroughly with a lint-free cloth to remove fingerprints, oil, or dirt before insertion.
  • Removing bubbles from the cuvette by swirling or gently tapping it.
  • Avoiding prolonged standing of the reacted sample after reagent addition.
  • Immediately discarding the sample after reading to prevent permanent staining of the glass.

Maintenance Features

The HI 718 is designed with battery management features to extend battery life. It automatically shuts off after 2 minutes of non-use and 10 seconds after a reading is displayed. A fresh battery provides a minimum of 5000 measurements.

Battery Replacement:

  1. Turn off the instrument by holding the button until the meter shuts off.
  2. Turn the instrument upside down.
  3. Remove the battery cover with a screwdriver.
  4. Remove the old battery and replace it with a fresh 1.5V AAA battery.
  5. Replace the battery cover and secure it with the screw.

The manual also recommends using specific accessories for maintenance and optimal performance:

  • HI 731318: Tissue for wiping cuvettes.
  • HI 93703-50: Cuvettes cleaning solution (230 mL).

Users are advised to ensure the products are suitable for their specific application and environment. They should avoid placing the instrument in a microwave oven and refrain from using or storing it in hazardous environments. Hanna Instruments reserves the right to modify the design, construction, and appearance of its products without advance notice.
