Overview

The Hanna Instruments HI 717 Phosphate High Range Checker is a portable, handheld colorimeter designed for accurate measurement of phosphate levels.

Function Description:

The HI 717 operates by measuring the blue tint produced when orthophosphate (reactive phosphorus) reacts with a reagent, following the Heteropolymolybdenum Blue method adapted from the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, 18th edition. A Light Emitting Diode (LED) at 525 nm serves as the light source, and a Silicon Photocell acts as the light detector. The instrument displays results in parts per million (ppm) of phosphate on a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD).

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Range: 0.0 to 30.0 ppm
  • Resolution: 0.1 ppm
  • Accuracy: ±1.0 ppm ±5% of reading @ 25 °C/77 °F
  • Light Source: Light Emitting Diode @ 525 nm
  • Light Detector: Silicon Photocell
  • Method: Adaptation of the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, 18th edition, Heteropolymolybdenum Blue method.
  • Environment: 0 to 50 °C (32 to 122 °F); max 95% RH non-condensing
  • Battery Type: 1 x 1.5V AAA
  • Auto-Shut off: After 10 minutes of non-use
  • Dimensions: 81.5 x 61 x 37.5 mm (3.2 x 2.4 x 1.5")
  • Weight: 64 g (2.25 oz.)

Usage Features:

The device features a simple, single-button operation.

  1. Power On: Press the button to turn on the meter. All segments will display, followed by "Add", "C.1" with "Press" blinking, indicating readiness for zeroing.
  2. Zeroing: Fill a cuvette with 10 mL of unreacted sample and cap it. Place the cuvette into the meter's holder (3) and close the cap (2). Press the button. The display will show "Add", "C.2" with "Press" blinking, indicating the meter is zeroed.
  3. Reagent Addition: Remove the cuvette, unscrew the cap, and add 10 drops of HI 717AS reagent and the contents of one packet of HI 717B-25 reagent. Replace the cap and shake gently until the reagent is completely dissolved. Place the cuvette back into the meter.
  4. Measurement: Press and hold the button until the timer is displayed on the LCD (a countdown will show prior to measurement). Alternatively, wait for 5 minutes and then press the button.
  5. Result Display: The instrument will display the phosphate concentration in ppm.
  6. Automatic Shut-off: The meter automatically turns off after 10 minutes of non-use to conserve battery life.

Tips for Accurate Measurement:

  • Ensure the sample is free of debris.
  • Cuvettes must be dry and free of fingerprints, oil, and dirt before insertion. Wipe thoroughly with a lint-free cloth (e.g., HI 731318).
  • Avoid shaking the cuvette vigorously, as bubbles can cause higher readings. Remove bubbles by swirling or gently tapping the cuvette.
  • Do not let the reacted sample stand for too long after reagent addition, as accuracy may be affected.
  • Discard the sample immediately after reading to prevent permanent staining of the glass.

Errors and Warnings:

The device provides several error messages to guide the user:

  • L.H (Light High): Too much light to perform a measurement. Check the preparation of the zero cuvette.
  • LLO (Light Low): Not enough light to perform a measurement. Check the preparation of the zero cuvette.
  • Inu (Inverted Cuvettes): The sample and the zero cuvette are inverted.
  • 0.0 (blinking, Under Range): Sample absorbs less light than the zero reference. Check the procedure and ensure the same cuvette is used for reference and measurement.
  • Flashing value (Over Range): Reading is over range. Dilute the sample and re-run the test.
  • Battery Low: The battery must be replaced soon.
  • Dead Battery: The battery is dead and must be replaced. Normal operation will be interrupted. Change the battery and restart the meter.

Interference:

Interference may be caused by:

  • Sulfide (S²⁻)
  • Fluoride (F⁻)
  • Arsenate (AsO₄³⁻)
  • Ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) above 100 mg/L

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Replacement: The instrument uses one 1.5V AAA battery. A fresh battery lasts for a minimum of 5000 measurements. When the battery is dead, the instrument will display "bad" then "bat" for 1 second and then turn off. To replace the battery, turn off the instrument by holding the button, then turn the instrument upside down, remove the battery cover with a screwdriver, remove the old battery, and insert a new one with the negative end first. Replace the battery cover and screw.
  • Cuvette Cleaning: Cuvette cleaning solution (HI 93703-50) is available for cleaning cuvettes.

Accessories:

  • Reagent Sets: HI 717-25 (Reagent set for 40 Phosphate High Range tests)
  • Other Accessories:
    • HI 717-11 (Phosphate HR Certified Standard Kit)
    • HI 731318 (Cloth for wiping cuvettes, 4 pcs.)
