Overview

The device described in the manual is a Harman Magnafire Series Coal Stove, available in Mark I, II, and III models. It is a solid fuel (coal) fireplace stove or room heater designed for heating residential spaces. The manual emphasizes that it is "BUILT TO A STANDARD, NOT A PRICE."

Function Description:

The Harman Magnafire coal stove is designed to provide warmth and comfort by burning anthracite coal. It functions as a room heater, capable of heating a single room or an entire house, depending on the model and installation. The stove utilizes a grate system to support the coal and allow airflow through the fire, facilitating combustion and enabling ash removal. It is approved for use in the U.S. and Canada.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Fuel Type: Approved for burning coal only, specifically pea, nut, and stove-sized anthracite coal. Burning other fuels (except for ignition) is a violation of U.S. law.
  • Electrical Rating: 115VAC, 60 HZ, 1.1 AMPS.
  • Chimney Requirements:
    • Must be connected to its own flue.
    • Minimum 8" x 8" flue area for proper operation.
    • Must be a "Class A" chimney (masonry with tile liner, insulated manufactured, or triple-walled metal).
    • Minimum height: 16 ft.
    • Must be 2 ft. taller than anything within 10 ft. of the roof.
    • Must be 3 ft. above where it passes through the roof line.
    • Capable of a minimum 0.06 inches of water column of draft.
  • Flue Connector Pipe: 6" diameter, minimum 24 MSG black or 26 MSG blue steel.
  • Clearances to Combustible Surfaces:
    • Unit to Sidewall: 33"
    • Unit to Backwall: 24"
    • Chimney Connector to Sidewall: 42"
    • Chimney Connector to Backwall: 18"
    • Floor Protector, Side and Rear: 8"
    • Floor Protector, Front: 16"
    • Pipe Connector to Ceiling: 18" (NFPA Guidelines, not tested)
  • Floor Protection: Minimum 3/8" thick non-combustible material, extending 8" to either side and 16" in front of the stove.
  • Glass: 5mm ceramic glass (replacement available from dealer).
  • Blower: 75cfm, 7ft cord (Mark I and II), 135cfm, 7ft cord (Mark III).
  • Firebricks: 9" X 4-1/2" x 1-1/4" (packaged in sets of 7).
  • Gaskets: 1/2" Round Rope (Load Door - Ash Door), 5/8" Channel (Glass).
  • Hot Water Coil (Optional): Available for domestic hot water heating, with plumbing diagrams provided for Thermo-Siphon and Circulating Pump methods.

Usage Features:

  • Draft Control: A knob on the ash door allows adjustment of airflow, ranging from closed (for extended burn times) to one full turn open.
  • Shaker Handle: An external shaker handle allows for safe and convenient removal of ashes without extra tools.
  • Air-wash System: The top and bottom of the viewing glass are open to provide air-wash, helping to keep the glass clean and providing secondary air to the firebox.
  • Blower: An integrated blower (75cfm or 135cfm depending on model) helps circulate heated air.
  • Loading: The stove is designed for top loading of coal.
  • Safety Features:
    • Magnetic thermometers are recommended on the stove and flue connector to monitor temperatures and prevent over-firing (chimney pipe/connector reaching 500°F indicates over-firing).
    • Instructions for safe fire starting, loading, and ash removal are provided to prevent property damage, bodily injury, or death.
    • Warnings against burning inappropriate materials (garbage, painted/treated wood, flammable liquids).
    • Emphasis on not leaving the stove unattended with the door open.
    • Guidance on proper chimney maintenance to prevent chimney fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Maintenance Features:

  • Blower Maintenance: Monthly, remove and clean the fan. More frequent checks are recommended if pets are in the house.
  • Grates Maintenance: Keep the ash pan emptied twice a day. Ashes left against the grates can block airflow and cause grates to warp from intense heat. Grates are removable without tools once firebricks are removed.
  • Chimney and Connector Maintenance: Regular checks for creosote and soot buildup in the venting and baffle area of the stove are essential to prevent chimney fires and ensure proper draft. Steel brushes are recommended for cleaning metal surfaces.
  • Spiral Chamber Cleaning: The internal spiral chamber must be cleaned periodically.
  • Ash Disposal: Ashes should be placed in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid on a non-combustible surface, away from other combustible materials, until thoroughly cooled. This container should not be used for garbage or other waste.
  • Paint Curing: During the initial hours of burning, a blue smoke will be observed as the paint cures. Increased ventilation is recommended during this period.
  • Chimney Inspection: If an existing masonry chimney has not been used for some time, it should be inspected by a qualified person (building inspector, fire department personnel, etc.) before use.
