This document provides the original user's instructions for the Hawksmoor 127.1cc Hand Propelled Petrol Lawnmower, SKU: 45043, distributed by Toolstation.
Function Description
This lawnmower is designed for domestic lawn mowing only. It is a hand-propelled petrol lawnmower, meaning the user pushes the machine to operate it. The primary function is to cut grass using a rotating blade and collect the cuttings in a grass bag. The cutting height can be adjusted to suit different grass lengths and conditions. The engine is a single-cylinder 4-stroke petrol engine, requiring specific oil and unleaded petrol for operation. The machine is intended for outdoor use and requires careful handling, assembly, and maintenance to ensure safe and efficient operation.

Usage Features
- Assembly: The lawnmower requires assembly of the lower and upper handles, and attachment of the grass bag. It is recommended that two people lift the machine from its packaging.
- Fuel and Oil: The engine is shipped without oil or petrol and must be filled with the correct grade of oil (SAE30 or equivalent) and fresh unleaded petrol before starting. Overfilling of oil or fuel should be avoided.
- Starting Procedure:
- Ensure the spark plug cap is located on the plug and the machine has sufficient oil and petrol.
- Press the primer bulb 3-5 times when starting a cold engine. The primer is not needed for a warm engine.
- Pull the Start/Stop bar towards the user.
- Pull the starter handle and rope slowly but firmly until resistance is felt, then pull briskly.
- To stop the engine, release the stop/start bar.
- Cutting Height Adjustment: The cutting height can be adjusted to one of 5 positions by pulling a lever towards the wheel and moving it forward or backward. It is advised not to use the lowest cutting height for the first cut of the season or in drought conditions, and only about one-third of the grass height should be cut.
- Mowing:
- Always maintain a firm grip on the upper handle with the stop/start bar closed.
- Walk, do not run, with the mower.
- Mow across slopes, never up and down, and exercise caution when changing direction on slopes. Do not mow excessively steep slopes (more than 15°).
- Avoid operating on wet grass.
- Ensure the grass bag is properly attached and the discharge flap is closed.
- Grass Collection: The lawnmower collects grass cuttings in a 45L grass bag. The bag should be emptied when full to maintain efficient collection.
- Safety Features: Includes warnings for hot surfaces, toxic exhaust gases, rotating blades, and flammable materials. It emphasizes wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety goggles, ear plugs, safety helmet, gloves, and safety boots. The engine must be stopped and the spark plug cable disconnected before any inspection or adjustment work.
Maintenance Features
- Routine Maintenance Schedule: A recommended maintenance schedule is provided, including checks and replacements after every use, 12 hours, 24 hours, and 36 hours of use.
- After every use: Clean the machine, check engine oil, and cutting blade.
- Every 12 hours: Clean air filter, check spark plug, engine oil, and cutting blade.
- Every 24 hours: Clean air filter, spark plug, replace engine oil, and check cutting blade.
- Every 36 hours: Replace air filter, spark plug, and cutting blade.
- Engine Oil Change: The engine oil should be changed after the first 5 hours of use, and then at the end of every season.
- Cleaning:
- Keep the machine clean and well lubricated.
- Ensure the chute and underside of the mower deck are clear of debris.
- Do not use water jets or high-pressure cleaners on the engine.
- Clean the air filter regularly; replace if excessively dirty.
- Spark Plug Maintenance: Clean the spark plug with a wire brush and set the gap to 0.7mm using a feeler gauge. Replace the spark plug as per the maintenance schedule.
- Blade Replacement: The metal blade should be renewed after 50 hours of mowing or 2 years, whichever comes sooner. Always wear garden gloves when handling the blade. The blade carrier is designed to break under heavy impact to protect the machine, and should also be replaced if damaged.
- Storage:
- Short Periods: Allow the engine to cool, empty the grass bag, clean debris, and store on a flat, level surface in a safe place.
- Extended Periods (over 6 weeks): Perform storage maintenance by emptying the petrol tank, running the engine until all fuel is used, changing the oil, filling the cylinder with oil, and cleaning the machine. Store in a well-ventilated place. Alternatively, use Briggs & Stratton FUEL FIT to prevent fuel contamination.
- Troubleshooting: A table is provided to help diagnose and resolve common issues such as loud running/vibrations, engine not starting, unsteady engine, and unsatisfactory grass collection.
