Overview

This document is a user manual for a Hoover Chest Freezer, providing essential information for its safe and effective operation, maintenance, and disposal.

Function Description

The Hoover Chest Freezer is designed for the storage and freezing of edible foodstuffs. It utilizes a refrigeration system containing R600a (isobutane) as a refrigerant gas and cyclopentane as an insulating gas, both chosen for their environmental compatibility. The appliance is intended for household use and similar applications, including kitchen areas for personnel in shops, offices, and other working environments, farms, hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, and catering services. It is not designed for stacking with other appliances or for commercial/non-residential domestic household premises.

Important Technical Specifications

The freezer's operation is dependent on its climate class, which indicates the limited range of ambient temperatures it is designed for. The manual provides a table detailing the ambient temperature ranges for different climate classes (SN, N, ST, T) in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. For example, a freezer with climate class SN operates from 10 to 32°C (50 to 90°F), while a class T freezer operates from 16 to 43°C (61 to 110°F).

The freezing capacity of the appliance is specified in kilograms per 24 hours. For various models (BD-100, BD-150, BD-200, BD-255, BD-300) with different EC classes (A+, A++), the freezing capacity ranges from 10 kg to 14 kg per 24 hours. For instance, models BD-100 (A+ and A++) and BD-150 (A+ and A++) have a freezing capacity of 10 kg, while BD-300 (A+) has a capacity of 14 kg.

The recommended temperature setting range for the freezer is -24°C to -16°C. The factory default temperature set point is -18°C.

Usage Features

The freezer features a control panel with a digital display and indicator lights. To unlock the settings for temperature and quick-frozen functions, both the "+" and "-" keys must be held simultaneously for more than 1 second. Temperature adjustments are made by pressing the "Up" or "Down" keys, with each press increasing or decreasing the temperature by 1°C. The system automatically confirms the setting after 5 seconds of no operation.

A "Quick-Frozen Function" is available, activated by pressing the "Super FRZ." key 24 hours before loading food. This function automatically sets the temperature to -30°C, indicated by a slow flashing digital display and an illuminated light. The quick-frozen function runs for 26 hours, after which it automatically deactivates, and the freezer returns to its previous frozen state. It can also be manually deactivated by pressing the quick-frozen keys while in the unlock state.

The freezer includes a "Temperature Alarm Function" that activates if the cabinet temperature rises above -12°C after 3 hours of electrical operation, indicated by an illuminated alarm light and an audible buzzer.

For storing frozen food, users are advised to place prepackaged commercially frozen food in the freezer as quickly as possible after purchase and to adhere to "Use By" or "Best Before" dates. Fresh food should be prepared in small portions for rapid freezing and placed near the side walls, away from already frozen food. The maximum freezing capacity should not be exceeded to ensure optimal food quality.

The manual also provides a "DO and DON'T" list for proper usage, including advice such as defrosting food thoroughly in a fridge or microwave, ensuring the lid is completely closed, and avoiding the use of sharp objects to remove ice.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the freezer's performance and longevity. The manual recommends cleaning the freezer by switching it off at the socket outlet and unplugging it before cleaning. A lukewarm water solution with a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda is suggested for cleaning the interior, followed by wiping dry. Sharp abrasive instruments, soap, household cleaners, detergents, and wax polish should not be used.

Defrosting is recommended twice a year or when a frost layer of approximately 7 mm (1/4") has formed. To defrost, the freezer should be switched off, and the mains plug pulled out. Before defrosting, the thermostat knob should be set to "MAX" for 6 hours to ensure food is at its lowest temperature. Food should be wrapped in newspaper and stored in a cool place. The freezer has a water conduit at the bottom for draining defrosted water. The rubber cover of the conduit should be extracted (20-25mm) and twisted downward to allow water to flow out. After defrosting, the interior should be thoroughly dried, and the water conduit returned to its original position.

Lid seals should be checked regularly to ensure they are clean and free from food particles. If the freezer is not to be used for a long period, it should be switched off, emptied, cleaned, and the lid left ajar.

The manual also provides "ENERGY SAVING" tips, such as installing the appliance away from heat sources and direct sunlight, avoiding placing hot food directly into the freezer, ensuring proper air circulation by not overstuffing, defrosting regularly, keeping the door closed during power outages, and adjusting the temperature to avoid excessively cold settings. Removing dust from the rear of the appliance is also advised for energy efficiency.

Safety Information

The manual emphasizes several safety precautions. The appliance contains inflammable refrigerant and insulating gases, so in case of damage to the refrigerant circuit, open flames and ignition sources must be avoided, and the room should be thoroughly ventilated. Care must be taken during cleaning and transport to avoid damaging condenser metal wires or the mains cable. The appliance should not be moved by pulling the lid or handle. Installation in humid, oily, or dusty places, or exposure to direct sunlight, should be avoided.

Users are warned not to open the lid during a power failure, as frozen food should remain unaffected for up to 20 hours. If the lid is difficult to open after closing, it is due to pressure difference and will equalize in a few minutes. The appliance should not be connected to the electricity supply until all packing and transit protectors are removed, and it should stand for at least 4 hours after horizontal transport to allow compressor oil to settle.

The freezer is exclusively for storing and freezing edible foodstuff. Medicine or research materials requiring strict temperature control should not be stored in it. Before any operation, the power cord should be unplugged. Extension cords or adapters are not recommended. The power cord and plug should not be damaged, pulled excessively, or touched with wet hands. If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by qualified personnel. Inflammable and highly volatile materials (e.g., ether, petrol, LPG, aerosol sprays) should not be stored near the freezer. Objects or containers filled with water should not be placed on top of the appliance.

Disposal of the appliance should be done responsibly, following European directive 2012/19/EU on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). WEEE contains polluting substances and basic components that need proper treatment, recovery, and recycling. It should not be treated as household waste but handed over to relevant collection points or returned to the retailer when purchasing a new appliance.

The manual also includes "SAFETY CHILDREN!" guidelines, advising that old products with locks should be made safe to prevent child entrapment. Children aged 8 and above, and persons with reduced capabilities, can use the appliance with adequate supervision and understanding of hazards. Children should not play with the appliance, and cleaning/maintenance should not be performed by children without supervision.

The manufacturer disclaims liability for incidental or consequential damages if instructions are not followed, and the guarantee is void if the product is used in commercial or non-residential premises. Repairs should only be performed by qualified personnel.
