Setup (X Band) - -
Power Supply a nd Signal Source , General - The firs t step in setting up
a reflectometer system is to connec t the signal source to its power supply and
to put the power supply into operation . Any signal source may be used which is
capable of ( 1) generating a signal of + 10 dbm or greater over the desired band of
frequencies (0 dbm or greater if 10 - db d irectional couplers are used in both
channels) and (2) modulating the output signal.
NOTE : Though these instructions are being made specific to equipment
operating in the X band, the following instructions are to be con-
sidered typical , and may be adapted and applied when assem-
bling and operating a re flectometer in a band other than the X .
Power Supply and Signal Source , Specific - In the typical X - band reflec -
tometer setup being discuss ed, the signal source is a Hewlett - Packard Model
670HM SHF Oscillator (Swept) an d its power supply is a Hewlett - Packard Model
717 A Klystron Power Supply .
1. On the Model 670HM Os ci llator :
a. Plug the power cable into a 115-vol t, 50 - 60 '\ power source.

The receptacle for the power cable is on the rear of the
Model 670HM .
Turn the SELECTOR switch to REF . MOD , Check that the
A . C . POWER lamp lights and t hat the fan is operating .
Into the KLYSTRON POWER receptacle on the control panel ,
plug the output cable furnished with the Model 717 A .
Connect the SWEEP OUTPUT (Type BNC connector) to the
sweep input on a d - c oscilloscope .
T o
ensure that full po wer is not applie d to equipment in the
reflectometer system w hich may be subject to burn - out , the
ATTENUAT I ON contro l should be set at 5. (Th i s c ontrol is
subject to readjustment la ter in the procedure when putting
the system i nto operation.)
If an external attenuator (waveguide attenuator) is included
in the reflectometer setup , the Model 670HM ATTENUATION
control may be set at 0, and attenuati on introduced at the
waveguide attenuator . (See No te to step 2 of Waveguide
sect ion , below . )
2. On the Model 717A Power Supply :
a. Check that the MOD . SELECTOR switch , REFLECTOR
RANGE switch , and POWER switch are in the off positions.
Turn the BIAS V OLTS control completely counterclockwise.
