HET
SSB
phase noise
is
measured by mixing
the
RF
output
of the HP 8642
and
its 10 MHz reference signal in a double balanced mixer to eliminate
the
carrier
and
translate
the
noise spectrum down
to
a low frequency where
it
can
be viewed on a high resolution spectrum analyzer. The 10 MHz
reference
output
from
the
HP 8642's
rear
panel
is
used as
the
LO
input
for
the
mixer.
The
HP 8642's
output
is
set to 10 MHz
and
is
used as
the
RF
input
to
the
mixer. The
output
of
the
mixer
is
viewed on a
spectrum
analyzer
at
20kHz.
