18 Evaluating color laser printers
Reliable printing in a variety of environmental conditions
The printer delivers uncompromised print quality in a variety of environmental conditions. The
printer features temperature and humidity sensors used to precisely control printing conditions. For
example, the printer is less sensitive to adverse printing environments, such as offices where heating
or air-conditioning is reduced during evening hours.
Improved automatic color calibration
HP continues to refine and improve color calibration. The HP Color LaserJet 4650 uses new
measurement algorithms and methods to achieve even better color stability and repeatability.
A new time-saving feature enables the printer to skip calibration when appropriate, allowing the
printer to be available more quickly. If the fuser is powered off and on quickly (within 20 seconds),
calibration is not needed and will be skipped.
Automatic color calibration and cleaning results in excellent color uniformity and ensures that print
quality will be consistent over time. The printer automatically tests and adjusts color density when
you turn it on, after every 1,000 pages printed, or after 8 hours since the last calibration.
Calibration only lasts 75 seconds and will not interrupt a print job, maximizing productivity. The
printer also calibrates when you replace a print cartridge (1 minute, 15 seconds) or when you
request calibration from the control panel (5 minutes, 20 seconds).
Advanced toner formula
The organically grown toner has small particles that are more uniform and spherical than
traditional manufactured toners. The toner size results in fine detail on printed images, bright
saturated colors, and a good ability to match the screen (sRGB color).
HP Smart printing supplies
6
HP Smart printing supplies include technology that adjusts the electrophotographic voltages of the
print cartridges throughout the stages of their life. As the properties of the organic photoconductor
drum and toner change over time, adjustments are made for minor fluctuations in sensitivity. These
adjustments ensure even, consistent distribution of toner particles.
Media sensing capabilities
The printer uses a media sensor that is capable of identifying different media types—plain and
uncoated paper, overhead transparencies, glossy paper or film, and tough paper. This sensor lets
you automatically obtain the best print quality for your specific media type, without having to use
driver or control panel settings. This sensor is also capable of distinguishing acceptable
transparencies (color laser) from incompatible transparencies (monochrome laser and ink) in order
to protect the printer’s fuser from damage.
Vertical in-line architecture
Because the toner is applied directly to the media rather than via an intermediate transfer belt or
drum, text quality is sharper.

Using genuine HP supplies ensures availability of all HP printing features.
