Toner Smear
Possible Cause Action
Dirt in the printer. 1) Print a few more pages to see if the problem
corrects itself.
2) To clean the inside of the printer see “Engine
Cleaning” (page 62).
Dirty Fusing Rollers.
Toner build-up can
cause the print on a
page to smear.
Print a cleaning page. See “To Start Engine
Cleaning” (page 62).
Paper might be too
smooth.
Check the paper (or other print media) type and
quality.
Defective Toner
Cartridge.
Replace the Toner Cartridge. (See instructions with
the Toner Cartridge.)
The Fuser is
defective. The print
will smear if the Fuser
is not heated
sufficiently to bond the
toner image to the
paper.
Replace the Fuser.
The Static Eliminator
is dirty or is not
grounded, allowing a
static charge to
remain on the page.
Clean using compressed air. Replace the assembly
if damaged.
Engine requires
cleaning.
See “Engine Cleaning” (page 62).
Toner Cartridge
requires cleaning.
See “Toner Cartridge Cleaning” (page 63).
Engine Controller is
defective. The Engine
Controller regulates
fusing roller
temperature.
If a new Fuser does not resolve the problem, replace
the Engine Controller Assembly.
