Removal and replacement procedures 50
CAUTION: The cache module connector does not use the industry-standard DDR3 mini-DIMM
pinout. Do not use the controller with cache modules designed for other controller models,
because the controller can malfunction and you can lose data. Also, do not transfer this cache
module to an unsupported controller model, because you can lose data.
1. Back up all data.
2. Close all applications.
3. Power down the server (on page 26).
4. Remove all power:
a. Disconnect each power cord from the power source.
b. Disconnect each power cord from the server.
CAUTION: In systems that use external data storage, be sure that the server is the first unit to be
powered down and the last to be powered back up. Taking this precaution ensures that the system
does not erroneously mark the drives as failed when the server is powered up.
5. Extend ("Extend the server from the rack" on page 27) or remove ("Remove the server from the rack" on
page 28) the server from the rack.
6. Remove the access panel ("Access panel" on page 32).
7. If it is populated with expansion boards, remove the PCIe riser cage for better access ("Remove the
primary PCIe riser cage" on page 35).
8. If the existing cache module is connected to a capacitor pack, observe the FBWC module LEDs:
o If the amber LED is flashing, data is trapped in the cache. Restore system power, and restart this
procedure from step 1.
o If the amber LED is not illuminated, remove the controller from the server, and then continue with the
next step.
9. Open the ejector latches on each side of the cache module connector. Normally, the cache module is
ejected from the cache module connector. If the module is not ejected automatically, remove the cache
module.
